To answer the original question yea, it is the best thing ever. It saved my wallet freshmen year when some girl found it in Quiznos, facebooked me, then returned the wallet with about 200 cash in it.

Have you never read the articles about jobs and it says something like 30% of all businesses have decided to not hire a potential employee after checking facebook and other social networking sites?
Did you think that everyone has their profiles set to public? No. Most people have them as private. Well then how are these companies able to look at their profiles? There is software for it believe it or not.
Maybe it is on the torrent sites, it’s not like its going to create a huge stir. You can’t comment on anything all you can do is look, so in general why waste your time with it, unless you are an employer looking at a job candidate.
I’m not suggesting that you’re making anything up but if this program did exist it would create an enormous upstir that facebook would have to address.
A program, available only to businesses, that completely bypasses every security and privacy measure of the site? Sorry, don’t buy it.
I had heard the figure about companies deciding not to hire people because of facebook, but I attributed alot of this to a.) people who are smoking a bong in their profile pic, or shoving a credit card into a stripper’s ass b.)
people who make their friend list publicly available and have deadbeat-looking friends or c.) people who have improperly set their privacy and have made their pictures available to “friends of friends”, etc.

And That’s just the first hit after a quick google search. This specific instance may not show that actual “software” is being used, but I’m telling it does exist lol.
Also look at this, I believe it mentions the actual use of software. Gov’t uses the excuse of the patriot act to bypass security settings. Also mentions that the facebook privacy policy allows for this. You can bet that if they use it other people are too.

Playing on the “yes no” theme, he asked a question and punctuated it with anexclamation point!
The contradiction doesn’t look so great now that it’s written out. It went over better in my head. It would too, if you had a few beers.
You have a lot of control over who can see what in your profile. All you have to do is just set it up. Go ahead and get one!
Facebook is cool. I have one, my friends have them, some of my family that is far away, etc.
It’s just a good free communication line.
Put your account on private and if you want to be extra secretive just PM people on there instead of putting it on their public wall, I don’t think any software can see those messages.

Ghost, since I’m cocking up your thread, I’ll at least give my input. Sorry about that, too. haha
Facebook is, hands down, the best tool ever for staying in touch with extended friends. I’ve met people from all over the world who I can send an e-mail (ultimately) to anytime I want. And it’s easy to keep track of all of it.
Plus, it’s cool to share pictures/ideas with friends. It’s also cool to see your friends pictures from their trip to Europe or something, not the album from every friday night. Unless there’s a lingerie party every friday night at your college.
Keep in mind, to keep it useful and relatively shit-free, you have to keep it to people you know and want to relate yourself to, not people who friend you because both of you want to save the whales.
The privacy settings are good, too.
I’ll add something of use too then… ![]()
I actually find it very interesting to see the different friends that each other know from different circles… (as there’s a fiends in common feature) then try and figure out how each other know each other…
I have around 1000 or so friends now… so it’s funny to see all of the ways people interact… I don’t even think I’ve ever spoken to 1000 people… lol
It CAN be addicting though… but it’s free… and a good way to kill the night… rather then watching the tube… especially being a single parent… and being home a lot while the kids are sleeping… ![]()

lol sorry man.
Never do something you don’t want everyone to know about.
That is all.
I have it but don’t really use it. It was good to talk to some old friends but I don’t go around adding every person I know for the sake of having a huge friends list.
And if a person thinking of hiring me saw mine it would probably increase my chances of landing the job if anything.

That article was posted a year ago, the hack has since been fixed.

Im not a computer programmer, but you can make a program that will only run on a specific hard drive. So if someone wants to charge a company a lot for it, and make sure it doesnt get leaked out they can program it to your HDs serial number…atleast i believe you can do that.
I am a computer programmer, and you’re sort of right, but any licensing scheme can be cracked. Say you do write an application that can only be run on one hard drive with a specific serial number, that serial number has to be stored somewhere in the application. It may be encrypted and hidden, but it still has to be there.
And at some point, the application has to check it’s copy of the number against the number of the disk it’s running on. Right there you’ve got your vulnerability. You can either hack the application and change it’s copy of the number, hack the disk so that it provides whatever number the application is looking for, or just write a little bit of code to bypass the check altogether.
This is an oversimplified example, but I’m just trying to demonstrate that no piece of software is really safe from replication.
Look everyone, when it comes down to it, nothing is 100% secure, especially when it comes to computers, networks, and software. The only way to make sure the information stored on a computer is 100% secure from some sort of network vulnerability is to remove it from the network. Facebook is a piece of software and every piece of software has bugs and glitches.
The larger and more complex the system, the greater the likelihood of bugs. The more users and methods of access, the greater the likelihood of security issues.
When it comes down to it, facebook is a useful tool for keeping in touch with friends and whatnot. Yes, there does exist the risk that an employer, current or future, could gain access to things on facebook. The solution??? Don’t put anything up on facebook that you wouldn’t want your boss (or wife?) to see!!!
Did you spend your weekend with some buddies, a couple of underage transvestites, and a bucket of cocaine? Here’s an idea, DON’T PUT THE PICTURES UP ON THE INTERNET!!! Did you go out drinking on a Monday night and call in sick to work Tuesday? Don’t put up a message saying “still fucking ripped, playing hooky from work today! ZOMG ROFLCOPTER!” Seriously, it’s called common sense.
Regarding the OP’s concerns about invasion of privacy. It’s not like facebook will send a team to your house and find that copy of “Drunk Sluts” you’ve got hidden in the back of your sock drawer. You can choose what to put on your page and who can see it. Just be careful as facebook’s terms of service recently changed and they may now have legal basis for using things you posted even after you cancel your account.
Cheers,
Jay
