The problem with Kaepernick is that he says he’s trying to draw ‘attention’ to issues that already have the white-hot intensity of a thousand suns worth of attention on them already. We couldn’t give it more attention if we tried. Insulting the whole fucking country is not the way to go.
The only real thing the spoiled little rich frat boy is trying to draw attention to is himself. He was fading, getting forgotten, so he does something stupid to stay relevant for 2 more weeks.
But we’re Americans, if Beyonce breaks her pinky toe nobody will even know who Kaepernick was.
And now, he’s about to get cut and no team will touch him. Ray Rice is more likely to get a job. At least Ray Rice has talent.
It’s easy to tell what is right because it’s not even close. There are disputes in the numbers of war deaths and you can argue about exactly what the right way to measure the loss of a generation is. But the most favorable interpretation still leaves the Civil War as significantly less devastating to the US as a whole than WW2 to the Soviet Union.
Puff, I think your a genious, your posts are always very thoughtful and insightful. I wish you would participate more in the snake pit of PWI…
Honestly, most people here, on whatever side are cool. You always have a few assholes, but most people here are here to have good conversations and learn from each other. We have too few female posters and your thoughtfulness and perspective as a woman would be helpful I think, to many of us.
That’s what people don’t get about free speech. The biggest ‘advocates’ think it only can go one way. A person can say whatever they like and you have to take it. NO! It goes both ways. He’s free to express and people are free to express right back at him. Free speech doesn’t only belong to assholes. It belongs to all of us. It’s act and react. So while I support his right to express himself, I support everyone else’s right to rail on him endlessly.
I mean what has he really done in the fight for equality? He sat on his ass.
Others are working hard to make the country better and he sits on his ass. Where was he Eric Garner was killed? Where was he Alton Sterling was killed? When Philando Castile was killed? Where was he, when 5 Dallas Police Officers were slaughtered in cold blood? Where was he when 3 Baton Rouge Police were lured in and murdered? He was sitting on his ass.
Fuck Kaepernick. Can’t wait until they cut his sorry ass.
Which is the most “activist” team? The Rams?
Which is the most “activist” city? LA?
Which coach had great success with a quarter back who could hurt you with his legs? Jeff Fisher
This could be a ploy by Kaepernick to not get cut. It would be polarizing if the 49ers cut him now, despite him having had 3 surgeries and otherwise playing like shit.
Oh, wow. Thanks, Pat. I’m certainly not the smartest kid in the class. Many of you can run circles around me in terms of your knowledge of history, and I’ve never traveled. There’s always a balance in trying to be aware, to see things from other sides, to love people, and not let some of this kind of thing just raise your cortisol.
Relate to the topic. The 1968 Summer Olympics.
“I always saw the photo as a powerful image of two barefoot black men, with their heads bowed, their black-gloved fists in the air while the US National Anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” played. It was a strong symbolic gesture – taking a stand for African American civil rights in a year of tragedies that included the death of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy.”
Some history there about the other man in the photo. Very cool that the two Americans served as pall bearers at his funeral. I was so moved.
I wonder if Kaepernick thought it was going to go down like that?
We have Rosa Parks elementary schools, or Martin Luther King Jr. High schools. As it should be. I somehow doubt that there will ever be a Kaepernick Elementary, just like there are no Jane Fonda High Schools that I’m aware of.
There’s something about the respectfulness and timeliness of the gesture. Of course, Jane Fonda just triggered the sense of “she’s a traitor” in a lot of Americans. It’s very different to say something critical about America when you’re talking about solving problems in a place you love, like Dallas Police Chief Brown. He’s become a folk hero, loved and respected by people on both sides of the political aisle for saying hard things in such a sincere way. What a great guy.
Something interesting that I’ve noticed over the past few days as I’ve listened to those trying to defend Kaepernick:
Of course; the First Amendment is brought up (as it should be). I don’t think that anybody disagrees on his right to do what he did.
Then it digresses into these convoluted; hard-to-understand-and-decipher series of weak justifications and excuses.
What is all tells me that Kaepernick is on an extremely weak foundation in attempting to justify what he did.
Two other things:
PUFF; I agree with pat; please post more often. Yes…(pardon the language); PWI can turn into a Dick-Waving Sausage Fest…but once one deals with that; a lot is learned by listening to varying opinions.
So please…jump in when you can, and share with us your insights.
THANK you for that article on the 1968 200 meter Olympic Protest. I never knew this story.
I LOVE it when I learn more about a part of history that I thought I knew…
As a Vikings fan, I would be pissed if we signed Kap… I don’t see Zimmer wanting that guy on his team though. He chews Redman so he’s American as fuck.
Only the Bernie fans who don’t like Hillary will come out for Kap now after he put her on blast. Won’t be long though. They love these kind of things to get behind to make them feel like they are ahead of the curve and better than the rest of us muggles.
Stranger things have happened. The Steelers did sign Michael Vick, and that was absolutely Hated round these parts. Also uncharacteristic of the Steelers, as in the past they have been quick to cut people like Plax (and a slew of others) when they draw negative attention.
Wasn’t that a great story? The picture of those two men carrying the Australian Bronze medalist’s casket just got me teary.
There were some who thought it was disrespectful at the time. I wasn’t around in 1968 and I try not to speculate about what I might have thought their protest back then. I have no idea what a 1968 Puff would have thought about the Civil Rights movement, but the 2016 Puff is moved by it. I don’t think Kaeperdink is going to go down in history. This will be a blip.
