The mist. not too gory. I used to listen to the book on tape all the time. They replicated the book exactly…except the ending, but the movie ending is actually better…just a great movie.
The mist was so bad I couldn’t not walk out.
As for being scary but not gory, check out anything by David Lynch.

Event Horrizon!! For Sure great movie.
I really like Devils rejects from Rob Zombie, a little gory, but weird the way at time you sympathize with the killers…really well done. Soundtrack rocks also, lots of oldies.
Devils Rejects is one of my favorites, probably too gory though for OG, but not as gory as House of 1000 Corpses.
Event Horizon is awesome more than scary, I mean there’s some freaky stuff in it but not so much “horror.” Also that is one gory movie.
IT scared the shit out of me as a kid(7ish?). I had nightmares for weeks. I have no idea if it’s actually a solid horror movie or not because I haven’t seen it since(bad memories).
A lot of my favorites have already been mentioned with In the Mouth of Madness, IT, The Ring, Grudge, etc… but I also found The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Identity, High Tension, and Rose Red (if you have 4 hours to waste) to be pretty good.
I have never seen anything that unnerved me more than Javier Bardem’s Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men. Not officially a “horror movie” but it still freaked me out.
I really enjoyed No Country For Old Men and I guess I didn’t really consider it a horror or scary movie since my wife was able to watch it without closing her eyes.

Identity was a good movie. I’ve heard High Tension was good too, so I’ll have to move that up in my queue to get it sooner.
It looks like there have been a few recommendations for Them, so I’ll have to give that a shot as well.
I agree with the recommendations for The Shining and The Thing. Those movies scared the crap out of me as a kid.

My personal favorite is the original The Shining. My father showed it to me when I was about five, and I had nightmares for weeks.
Is that the one with Jack Nicholson? I saw that when I was a freshman in college and it still scared the shit out of me. I couldn’t stand the scenes when the kid would be riding around by himself in the motel. The scariest part was when he was riding and that tennis ball rolled up out of no where. Creeeeeepy.

Yep, Kubrick’s, I believe. Why the fuck was he riding around that fucker by himself anyway? That’s just crazy. Even I knew that when I watched it, and I was his age!
I just watched The Mist, based on recommendations here, and was sorely disappointed. Not even slightly creepy.

I never wrote that it was “creepy”. In fact, I wrote that it doesn’t fit into the horror genre at all and should qualify as “suspense”.
Go back the Geek Thread if you doubt this.
I also wrote that it stuck more closely to the book than any other movie I have seen…period.

I was alluding to Masonator’s recommendation in this very thread; I did not see you mention The Mist here, and I haven’t been following the Geek thread. I also have no reason to doubt you, and fully believe it follows the book more closely than any other movie you have seen.
That said, I would agree it is a suspense movie. I thought the ‘other dimensions’ schtick was a bit bland, however.
I’ve seen Session 9. I remember really liking that movie, though I’m having a hard time right now remember what all happened. I’m definately going to have to watch that one again.
