Shooter tries to kill Republican, shoots him in hip. Shooter is shot dead by good American police men with guns.
He was a Democratic Socialist as well which is entertaining.
Left wants to control guns but lefty can’t control a gun.
Bernie blamed conservatives for Gifford getting shot for the record. While I absolutely don’t believe Bernie or mainstream Dems are responsible, by THEIR reasoning they are.
The calls to violence on the left aren’t from the fringe. The “resistance” is talk from mainstream Democrats. Hillary has announced she’s part of “the resistance,” Madonna publicly spoke of bombing the White House, Kathy Griffin just played victim because she held a model of Trump’s severed head, a play sponsored by Fortune 500 companies just depicted Trump’s assassination, and we could go on and on. No, this isn’t a matter of “both sides.” The left is using violence to suppress free speech on college campuses and anywhere else they can get away with it. Bernie’s statement was too little too late, and I personally believe he’s full of shit. He and his followers are the ones who have been calling for the “resistance.” The fact that one of them did this is no surprise. The connotation of “the resistance” isn’t lost on anyone nor is the use of “fascists” in connection with the word. Compare Republicans to NAZIs and Facists and you can justify all sorts of violence. I have been a very luke warm Trump supporter but that support is growing because of the bat shit crazy response to him from the left. And it’s not just Trump. Many of the same epithets were thrown at Romney when he ran.
This was a response to actual calls for violence by Hollywood and mainstream democrats. This isn’t the fringe. That is what scares me. The fringes on the left and right are scary enough, but when talk of fascists and resistance and bombing and assault leave comments on the internet and instead come out of the mouths of people on the national stage then yes, there is a very real problem, and it needs to stop.
I’m not saying there isn’t a very real problem with political discourse in the country. This is an obvious example that there is.
I’m saying, sticking your fingers in your ears and playing the blame game doesn’t address the real problem or foster a real conversation about how to fix it and move forward.
Pointing out that there have been clear calls to violence isn’t so much the blame game as it is pointing out that the line has been crossed and the consequences have been put on full display. If the rhetoric cools then I have hope but I’m not convinced we will see that.
It has happened in the past. Most of my friends and colleagues over the years have been Democrats. What I’ve seen over the last few years though is a real shift in tone and rhetoric. My FB blew up over the election and every act of violence or rude talk was a reason to blame Trump. Yesterday, however, resulted in zero posts of sympathy or even acknowledgment. My point is that I’m afraid that I’m watching what was once fringe become acceptable and mainstream. I’m honestly scared that we will see increasing political violence and eventually the right wing fringe will come out in full force. As I said above the fringes terrify me. The country needs desperately to run back to the middle and embrace core values of free speech, tolerance, and rational debate.
It’s ludicrous to infer a primary causal association between an act of extreme, targeted violence such as this and the individual’s left-right political leanings. This was the act of a mentally deranged individual, not a ‘liberal’ individual–just as it won’t be the act of a ‘conservative’ individual when that inevitably occurs (or as in occurrences past; eg, Dylann Roof).
There is evidence emerging that indicates this guy was highly unstable and mentally ill. Further, he had a history of violence. I would hope we can all agree that someone with his history should never have been allowed to acquire the weapons that he did.
Clear calls to violence on the national stage are new, at least since the 1960s and 1970s. I’m afraid that Obama’s clemency of Oscar Lopez Rivera sent quite the message about the violence of that era.
