My sincerest wish is that Bernie Sanders represent the democrat party in the general election. He would lose by monumental proportions. Lest you think I stand alone on this position Karl Roves own “Crossroads” has invested millions in anti Hillary commercials so that Bernie would be their standard bearer.
Those who are actually stupide enough to be sucked in by cross party polls at this early date will have a gigantic surprise coming should Bernie actually pull off this miracle (which by the way I doubt the DNC will allow). Any republican, yes even Donald Trump (if he is a republican but that’s another post) will trounce Bernie.
And one more point just so no one forgets. I said about 8 months ago that Hillary Clinton will never become POTUS and I am sticking to that prediction. Many of you who doubted that call are fully on board now. Unless the democrats find a white knight somewhere this will be a republican year–BET ON IT!
I agree with you in your assessment that the DNC will not allow Bernie to be there nomination. Even if he wins the popular vote. However, I believe you are wrong in your prediction that Bernie(if he is the nomination) will get trounced at the election provided that there is a good turn out. The amount of people who turn up at his talks are more than any other Republican and Hillary. So this flies in the face of your prediction. The majority of people are on his side of the policies so…,.
Looking at the situation with super delegates, Bernie doesn’t stand a chance. I just checked and the count currently stands at Hillary with 481 vs 55 for Bernie.
While it is pointless to argue something that has virtually no chance of happening I can’t resist. Back in 1972 the democrats had another left winger, not quite a socialist but close, George McGovern. He used to draw thousands to his rally’s. He mostly held them on College campuses or somewhere close to a University. He too promised free stuff nothing new for the democrats. But he had absolutely no charisma. Certainly far more than your beloved Bernie. That is to say he was not a hunched over grey haired balding old man. Anyway, many far left wingers ware saying exactly what you are saying now. To the point, he lost the general election to one Richard Nixon, who didn’t have a whole lot of charisma himself, by a popular vote by something like 20 million votes! A real landslide indeed.
One interesting point about that election year was that the Nixon people were so rattled by McGovern’s apparent popularity with the youth that they had G. Gordon Liddy and his crew break into the Watergate hotel to steal whatever they could find on McGovern. As you know that led to Nixon resigning from office. Not impeached as was Bill Clinton, but voluntarily leaving because of the threat of impeachment.
Anyway…
There are other tales of people drawing big crowds but that not working out for them in the general election. Another would be Walter Mondale bakc in 1984 who used to draw record crowds. The left wing liberal media would always show him standing in front of a crowd of thousands with his VP in tow. But in the end it was discovered that it was his VP that people were curious about. That was the first time that a woman Geraldine Ferraro was named on a Presidential ticket.
In the end Bernie is a freak show. People like a freak show. And young idiots love to think that everything should be free. That combination brings in plenty of fringe attention. One final point, only about 30% of the population is paying attention currently. I would hazard a guess and say far less than that regarding the 20 something crowd. After all they have many things to think about other than who is going to be the next President…like where their next beer is coming from.
I’m just trying to do you a favor with this explanation. I don’t want you to get your Socialist hopes up only to be dashed should Bernie somehow pull off a miracle and be the democrat nominee. But…alas…as we both know he won’t even make it that far.
Clinton was impeached? News to me. I know there were hearings but I’m unaware it rose to that level. So the money that went to the banks by government decree wasn’t free stuff? Futhermore, when corporations are not paying taxes, aren’t they getting free stuff?
Yes, I’m aware that Sanders has a tough road to travel to become the nomination. However,the rest of the candidates merely represent the status quo. He is the only one without a SuperPac and survives off of public donations which average $27. No quid pro quo with the fossil fuel or finance lobby. And this is more than I can say for the rest of the candidates.
in reference to voter turn out, the democratic turnout at the polls is below 2012 levels and the republican turnout is well above. That’s only based off two states, but those were also states where Bernie did well. I think its a stretch to say Bernie will be turning out a ton of new voters as the evidence shows that he Obama turnout was higher.
Clinton was impeached but not removed from office in December of 1998.
As for Sanders he may not take PAC money but neither does the guy who hangs out near a main highway running through my city with a sign that says “need help give me a few bucks”. In other words, there are worse things than taking PAC money. One that I can think of is electing a Socialist as President.
In regards to an election. There isn’t much worse than being bought and paid for by big corporations to carry on the charade of free and honest elections.
