Things seem to be coming faster these days.
Rosenstein threatened to resign after the narrative emerging from the White House on Tuesday evening cast him as a prime mover of the decision to fire Comey and that the president acted only on his recommendation, said the person close to the White House, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Yes, but by such petty acts of revenge as firing Comey before meeting Lavrov and Kislyak he’s letting Russia score cheap moral and propaganda points at US expense.
And as far as the TASS propaganda photo-op is concerned, there are only two options - either Trump and his team are in collusion with the Russians or they’re gullible fools.
As Trump has repeatedly demonstrated during the campaign, anyone who has something bad to say about the Democrats is ok in his book. So to the current POTUS sides with a hostile foreign power (“Great move by V. Putin”, “hack her e-mail” etc.) and their respective agents (Wikileaks for example) over fellow Americans.
If I was Assad I’d plaster Damascus with giant “Crooked Hillary” posters - I’m sure that would pay off immediately.
Not only that, for all alleged “alpha manliness” according to the alt-right creeps, Trump and his entourage seem remarkably submissive and docile when talking to the Russians, even inside the White House. Just look how Lavrov basically took over the joint press conference with Tillerson.

And this speaks to a larger point - the GOP and conservatism generally are now simply about “the lulz” - you don’t need knowledge, experience, or character, or even adherence to conservative principles…as long as you troll or mock a Democrat or the Left, then you’re heralded as federal office material. That’s the only criterion any more.

Trump also reiterated his claim that he had been planning to fire Comey even before he received Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s recommendation.
Yesterday they said he fired him because of Rosenstein’s letter. So Trump just lent more credence to the suspicion that he fired him over the Russia investigation.
