Roles Actors Have Turned Down

I heard Verne Troyer turned the role of Iron Dwarf in the biopic film, “The Tiny Artist”.

ID, why do you say thank god? Shawshank is probably my all time favorite movie and I wouldn’t change a thing but I really think Hanks could have played the role just as well.

Oh, my favorite is that Arnold was originally supposed to play Kyle Reese (played by Michael Beihn) in the Terminator, and OJ Simpson was supposed to play the T-100. Producers scrapped the idea 'cause they thought no one could picture OJ as a killer. No shit.
I’ve heard this before but I suspect urban legend. I suppose if I wasn’t such a lazy sack, a quick trip to Snopes would answer it but oh well.

I think that is true, he was supposed to play the hero but opted for the robot instead.

Good choice.

Not a fan of Hanks. He’s not understated enough anyway. Tim Robbins is understated in nearly everything he plays.

Shawshank is in my top 5 greatest films. Even though I own the DVD, whenever I come across Shawshank while flipping through channels, no matter where it picks up from, I always end up watching it through! It never loses it’s Power on me. Fuckin’ amazing story and film-making!

Mmmmhhh…

Meg Ryan turned down pretty woman too.

Wonder what role Denzel was to play to Full Metal Jacket?

The token black guy, wasn’t there just 1 in that movie?

I think he was cast and they shot a good part of the movie before they realized it wasn’t working and replaced him.
Stoltz was fired because his performance was too dramatic. It worked out because original choice Michael J. Fox became available to do the movie in the meantime. He wasn’t the only replacement: they also had to recast Jennifer because the actress cast opposite Stoltz was taller than Michael J. Fox.

As did Ewan MacGregor before Keanu got his shot.

Anthony Hopkins was 1st choice for Alfred in Nolan’s Batman movies; Chris Cooper was offered Gordon ahead of Gary Oldman (Nolan wanted GO for a villain).

Both John Cusack and Matthew Broderick were asked to play Walter White in Breaking Bad but declined (Bryan Cranston’s background in comedy initially counted against him).

Arnie was offered John McClane and was set to play John Neville in I Am Legend with Ridley Scott as director.

Tom Cruise nearly played Tony Stark .

Toshiro Mifune was George Lucas’ top pick for Obi-Wan.

Annette Bening was cast as Catwoman in Batman Returns but had to drop out after falling pregnant.

Dougray Scott won the part of Wolverine but had to give it up when Mission Impossible 2 ran over schedule.

Cary Grant turned down James Bond; the role went to Connery, who was being groomed to play Tarzan at the time.

Edit: I meant Robert Neville, not John Neville ( I was thinking of the actor who played Baron Munchausen).

Anthony Hopkins and Sam Neill were also courted before Ian McKellen. Stuart Townsend was Aragorn but was fired and replaced by Viggo Mortensen.

Alison Doody (Dr. Schneider in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) was asked to play Eowyn.

Was that the elf one or the human one? I can’t understand why Tolkien used almost the same names for so many characters. I think Liv Tyler made the best elf imaginable. She was perfectly cast and she played it perfectly.

Christopher Reeve turned down Body Heat.

Cameron also cast Lance Henriksen as the Terminator before coming to the decision that Arnie would be better suited as the bad guy.

James Remar was Hicks in Aliens but again was fired apparently due to a drug problem. Biehn took over (obviously).

Tom Skerrit was supposed be the main character in Alien before the script was re-written to have a female lead. Skerritt was given the role of Capt. Dallas as a consolation.

Eowyn was the blond human who disguised herself as a man and killed the Witchking.

I wonder if this was the turning point where women started being cast as THE hero in movies.

Roybot, if that wasn’t a google job–not saying it was–that’s pretty impressive movie knowledge.

I can understand not wanting to do forest bump…

Who wants to be seen as forest bump for their whole lives?

I don’t even know who played bump but if I see him in a movie I see and here gump
