Question For Police Officers

to the op or anyone else seriously asking. i have been a cop for 10 years. a detective for 9, and a swat team menber for 2. i would be glad to answer any questions you might have. just send a pm.

This might sound like a wierd question but its been nagging at me a lot lately. Are you guys able to take unpaid vacation? 2 weeks just doesn’t seem like enough time for me. I’d rather make a little less & have like a month off a year to go climbing/travel/etc.

Is it an option but just no one uses it?

Is there anybody in the RCMP out here? I am actually preparing my application papers but I would still love to hear from anybody that has gone through training at Depot.

I believe you will find many different answers to this based on your departments policy.
We earned a set number of vacations per month. You received additional days after each 5 year increment of time on the department. You received the federal holidays and your birthday as part of your vacation.

Due to the job being 24/7/365, if you were scheduled to work a holiday as part of your regular 40 hour week, you got paid straight time. Toward the end of my career, I had 34 vacation days I could use a year. The unused could be rolled over to the following year. The maximum you could maintain was double whatever you received per year, before you began to lose them,

I also had over 100 days of sick time saved up.

You couldn’t just take time off, even unpaid, at your leisure.

What is the standard process of one become a detective?

I think that I would like to be a cop, but after awhile I would like to move on to detective work.

Porter: “Crooked cops. Do they come in any other way? If I’d been just a little dumber, I could have joined the force myself.”

My best buddy is a cop. He freakin’ loves it. I had thought about it at one point. After hearing some of his stories, I’m glad that I didn’t pursue it. I wouldn’t be able to handle myself in some of the situations that he’s been in.

For instance, he responded to a call of a baby that was thrown down the basement stairs by the babysitter because the baby wouldn’t stop crying. How do you not beat the fukin’ shiat out of that person? I would have seen the baby and just lost it.

Being a cop takes some self control that I don’t have. Good luck man… good luck.

Reference the days off and vacation time…every department is different. We earn vacation time, holiday time, sick leave, family leave, etc. on my department. However, you have to balance that out with minimum staffing requirements in patrol. I would say, for the most part though, that we do pretty well for time off in my dept.

Also, we recently switched to 4 days on, three days off, which the patrol division really likes. Working 10 hrs isn’t much different from working eight, and the three days off is definitely worth it. Again though, this varies by dept.

As for the detective question. Some departments, particularly the larger, metropolitan ones, require you to either promote or take some sort of proficiency test to become a detective. On my dept, for example, you have to promote to corporal, and then you lateral over to detective. Some smaller ones may not require this, though.

For the OP, don’t just think about it. Go apply. If you make it through, you will have a career like no other. No matter the criticism, it’s the best job in the world, hands down.

Just recognized the movie quote.

Do you need attention? Should I call last comic standing to tell them you have been here the whole time?

Shutup you goof. Anybody who knows anything about fighting knows that it isn’t always size that matter. Under your logic bruce lee wasn’t safe because he was small. Fuck your a goof. Have fun sucking on the tip of a police man’s penis.

well, that was an intelligent, well thought out reply.

“All i know is the better my form gets the less I can lift. But the stronger I get. I deadlift about 200 max right now, and I am damn sure I will not be up to 350 lbs in a FEW weeks while trying as hard as I can to push with only my heels and keep my back perfectly straight.”

Jor-El says to lighten up, your tights are too tight; it was nothing more than a funny movie quote (or did that hit too close to home?) Considering that I just built our town’s brand spanking new $14 million police headquarters, I don’t have a problem at all with police… or their money.
