Question for Military Vets

Sounds kinda backward but to get the opportunity to be an Infantry officer you need to have a very high GPA in college. Mine was just average.

lol. it was my commissioning ceremony dammit. cut a butterbar some slack.

in all seriousness though, that guy went on and passed selection. he’s about midway through the Q-course right now.

I don’t even know what that means and I’m impressed.

Gonna go look it up now.

Basically, don’t pick a fight with this guy. Your best bet is to hit and run. But he’ll probably outrun you. Have a car ready.

Good to know. I’ll file that away under ‘shit not do to’.

What kind of time does it take 'til/if you get to his level of achievement?

Unfortunately for me, I commissioned in 2002 (read = after 9/11)… so a lot more guys were picking IN as their first choice to go phuck up some TB… I got lost in the shuffle and ended up getting my third choice… which was ADA (Air Defense Artillery), but also known as Alcoholics Defending America and dicks in all directions (you’d have to see the branch insignia for that one)… anyway, IN was my first choice and AR was my second choice… guess I should have done a little better in school so I could have ended up in the top third of my commissioning class… >:(

It takes a while. I have an idea on how long it would take, but it isn’t my lace to speak. You’re better off waiting for Holy Mac or Ranger to answer you.

You can hit Ranger school up right after you finish all of your officer training and branch specific schools. Very Very few Officers get the opportunity to go to selection for SF. The trick is if you want some special training to be the very best you can be at all opportunities and make some noise about it. Let every commanding officer you ever have know that you want to go to (fill in the blank) school ASAP

Does anyone know the specifics of the “Green to Gold” program?

commission in the army. go infantry or armor.

go to ranger school, pass ranger school.

do platoon time. be a platoon leader. get good OER (officer evaluation reports)

get promoted to 1LT. get a job being an XO.

when you are 1LT(p) ex:on track to get promoted to captain, you submit your packet for a chance to attend selection. that’s two weeks long. if you pass that you go on to the Q-course, which can last from 8-14 months. after completion of that you will be assigned to a SF team. and you’ll be a baller.

promotion to 1LT is 24 months (or 18 with commanders approval) promotion to captain is another 24months i think? (don’t quote me)

dude there’s so much info and i woudln’t want to get it all wrong.

good link. like we’ve all admitited it though, best best is to sit down with a green to gold recruiter

or you can be a sly bitch like holymac and commission straight into an SF under an INF mosq. then you blow everyone higher rank than you until they promise you a selection slot.

agreed though, even the ‘gentlemen’ schools like airborne and air assault you still need to make a fuss to get your slot if one isn’t issued to you.

Well, for a 2LT, if he doesn’t do any hometown recruiter or shit like that, he’ll pretty much go to OBC (Officer Basic Course)… side note, for IN guys it’s IOBC (Infantry Officer Basic course), then Ranger school (IN officers pretty much get a “ticket” straight to Ranger school), and then off to your unit. Once he gets to his unit, he’d take over a Plt (Platoon) for about 12-18 months (I managed to get 21 months of PL…Platoon Leader… time).

After that, he would either become a Company XO (Executive Officer) or go to an assistant staff position. If they were trying for SF, once he became promotable, he could put in his packet (becoming promotable is right around 30 months time in service)… HOWEVER, a lot of this is subject to change and be a little different… I’m a CPT waiting on my promotion board to MAJ, so I haven’t seen a lot of the lower level stuff in a while… also, I’m stationed at Fort Dix (yeah, yeah, yeah, I’ve got a sham job) getting NG/Reserve units ready to deploy, so not a lot of people here are trying to go Ranger/SF/Airborne, etc… HolyMac, if I missed something, let me know… OH, one thing I forgot is that useless course they are supposedly getting rid of now, BOLC… I know NOTHING about that… I missed that bullshit by mere months…

Jesus Christ, 8-14 months. I didn’t know it took that long. And that’s just the Course. Fuck.

yeah, i’m going at the end of this year and should be one of the last few going through BOLC 2. funny because that shits only like 3 years old.

it’s supposed to be pretty much like LDAC 2.0 ‘everybody a rifleman’ and all that gay shit. i dunno, haven’t been yet. supposedly it’s just a easy paycheck and playing army

‘pew pew pew!’

but yeah, you’re pretty dead on. if he was considering going sf, i know armor units pipeling their LT’s to ranger school as well.

and a MAJOR longshot would be to branch chemical. every sf unit requires a couple chem guys, and since most chem-os aren’t looking to go that route, might be an easy way to get your packet looked at

so ummm, when you hit field grade, wanna send me some cans of surge?

yeah i know you do dammit! ummmm…sir

lol

don’t forget man, that includes learning a second language. qualifying and learning almost every modern firearm, domestic and foriegn. learning first aid. learning how to use every kind of commo equipment. SERE school where they supposedly make you cry like a little bitch everyday

and on and on and so forth and yadda yadda

lol.

really sgtQ?

come on now.

be serial.

on an unrelated note, had an AF buddy of mine crash at my place the day i left for orders. picked up his green (is that the color?) boots b/c in the dark they looked like the acu boots.

yeah, then drove 4 hours to report in. what a great fucking experience. lol.

don’t join the af OP. i tried lifting with some air force dudes the other week and they started crying. like tears. from lifting weights.

Oh man, you didn’t know? We perform our P.T arount 8am after a good breakfast and another nap! Don’t be jealous at our quality of life! Army bases are nothing more than a couple of buildings and Jungle Training Land for training ops:)

On the other hand, OP ask the Brainwashed Army warriors who they call when they are pinned down or need some eye in the sky? Look up J-Stars and AWACS F-22’s and other Air Support the Army cries for constantly!

Finally, leave our illustrious training program alone:(

Got a buddy who just joined Nat’l Guard and left for basic a week ago. Seemed to have everything figured out and was pretty excited. He graduated from college in '06 and signed up with a program that will put him through Physician Assistant school after 4 (or 6? I forget) years of service. I would love to do something similar and if anyone has any advice or input, I appreciate it.

I graduated from college in '07 with a double BA in Int’l Relations and French and I’ve been twiddling my thumbs ever since. I work for a medical clinic but it’s def not what I want to do with my life. I’d love to go to law school and from what I understand, there are programs through the military where they will eventually pay for it.

I know this is a broad question, but I’ve heard horror stories about recruiters promising the world and then guys getting stuck with a bad deal. Any advice for someone looking into OCS or other avenue?
I didn’t read the whole thread, so someone might have already posted this. Here are the AMEDD education opportunities. This is what your buddy did to become a PA. If you are interested in the medical field, the Army has some awesome opportunities to pay for school and become an officer.

yeah, I think I can throw you a couple of cans of Surge… speaking of which, I have yet to try that… guess that’s next on my list of stuff to buy…

Thanks for the link. I’m not looking into the medical field, but I’m sure I’ll find some other program to get either Law school or some type of Grad school paid for.

But what if you’re a smart fuck and you want to hump a pack and get shot at. And hopefully return fire?
Then your a Marine.

if you go JAG they’ll pay for your law school.

otherwise, since you didn’t use the GI bill while you were in college, you could use the GI bill to pay for your grad school.

you’d make a ton of money just GOING to school. lol
