Purple Rain

Dude, Chappelle is a fucking genius.

OMG Soulja that is a hilarious Prince story, fucking light up Skates with sparks coming out of the fucking back…only Prince.

Yo he surely was and still is in my mind. That guy had a show that probably would never end until he snapped. I have all of his work.

Regarding Prince, he is the man and there isn’t much to it. I remember seeing purple rain when I was 4 at the movie theaters and being a kid I thought it was a really long music video that I enjoyed. After most artist hit the big highs they eventually come down but he came out even harder with " Cream " on the Batman soundtrack. I have tons of friends that will defend him against MJ in being the top but I say they are both the Kings for their own reasons. To me MJ paved the way and consistently shut it down with his music, had some issues regarding the kids and too much play time and got his life cut short from some form of BS. Prince has always done his thing. To me he was the adult version of MJ and brought the heat on a ton of tracks as well and hey, you know you are on point when Dave Chappelle does a skit of you.

I would actually put them about equal but for different reasons. I mean, honestly. anyone who really listens to Jackson’s stuff should know the man will always be remembered as being a genius in music…many years after most of us are dead.

Prince is rumored to be able to play EVERY instrument. I am not sure how true that is, but it wouldn’t surprise me.
I wasn’t knocking Michael Jackson at all, but from a creative standpoint, Prince is untouchable. Jackson is more vocally gifted and a better dancer, but Prince’s sound is way more sophisticated, and he produced his music himself. I’m sure he plays most or all of the instruments on his own records because the guitars, keyboards, drums, etc. on his albums all sound like they came from the same mind.

I would go gay for Prince, except I’m not entirely sure Prince has a gender.
So you would fuck Prince no matter what he/she is? I like it…

He plays berimbau?

And sambomba?

Well, I think its first to distinguish good musician from “entertainer or performer”. We can distinguish it ever further with “singer”. MJ was certainly anyone’s equal for entertainer or performer. I don’t think he was much revered for his “singing”. However, as you alluded to, Prince was indeed a musician in that he plays instruments. I believe it was on his first album Dirty Mind that he played all the instruments used in that album because it was made on a shoestring budget and contained controversial material.

I don’t believe he “plays all instruments”. MJ, as far as I know, played no instruments. Prince has heavily written his own music and musical scores. MJ I believe had much of his lyrics written for him and I would venture to say he could not actually “read or write music”. Prince does.

When analyzed in proper terms, Prince is hands down the better musician. He’s no slouch as a performer either and it can certainly be argued that MJ was his equal or superior as a “performer”.
+1, I agree totally. I like Jackson Five stuff and older solo Michael. But I’
ll put the guy who plays and writes his stuff and knows how to dominate a stage also over the guy who just sings. Of course, I was a a Prince guy over Michael Jackson.

Apollonia, Sheila E, and a bevy of other honeys beat Webster, Culkin and a variety of other little boys. If I have to chose a pervert musician I’ll chose the guy that might teach me something and has been with the best looking women in the world over the guy who would end up getting me on Megan’s list.

What’s really cool…is that most people that “eccentric” don’t last that long. This fucker has been like this from day one…has not changed his style, yet has managed to be a step beyond most performers for over 30 years.

The ONLY reason he isn’t more seen now is because the youngest crowd is clueless about him and he is older than “souljaboy”.

Sidenote: Forgive me for uttering the name ‘souljaboy’ in the same post as Prince.

I am sure there is some cosmic disaster waiting for all of us as a result.
Agreed. I don’t know how you can like hip hop without having some Prince, George Clinton, Motown guys and gals, and some Blues and Jazz.

Of course the young ins I know that are stupid know little about Clapton, Zeppelin, Bob Seger, The Who etc. It’s kids these days.

I’m not a fan of MJ, but I fucking love Prince. That said, they’re both just biting off of James Brown’s style:

Go back to the American Psycho reference, it the only success found here.

prince is said to be able to sing in eight octaves.

he covers led zeppelin songs beautifully.

he plays a lot of instruments. well.

he is an amazing dancer and performer.

he has created careers and hits for a lot of people. sheena easton, appolonia, shiela e, etc.

kiss was a hit twice his version and then tom jones’s.

someone covers his song and it is a hit. (sinead o’connor) nothing compares to u

great composer and lyricist - annie christian “anti-christ. i live my life in taxicabs.”

little red corvette, doves cry - video and the song (uncut), purple rain the entire album and movie,
adore, sexy motherfucker, cream…

he lost the right to use his own name in a fight with a record label.
so many people made fun of him going by a symbol for years. then he won the right to use his name. take that.

he is a badass.

i think there is not much of a comparison when it comes to creative genius and musicianship between michael jackson and prince nelson. i think michael was a fan of prince.

i am a fan of both.

Another noted cover of a Prince song was “I Feel For You” by Chaka Khan.

I agree with most of what you said, but I don’t think having your songs covered, and the cover versions becoming hits, is really that notable. Plenty of groups & artists have had that happen…And the 2 covers you mentioned, and the one I mentioned, are the only cover versions of Prince songs which became hits, as far as I know.

Also, I don’t think I’ve liked a Prince song since the 80s. “Cream” and “Gett Off” were OK, but I wasn’t crazy about those songs…Nothing after that has appealed to me in any way.

I found both Michael Jackson & Prince, later in their careers, seemed to go for a pop version of the whole current hip-hop craze, using similar beat sequencing and such.

valid points about covers. i crush on him so hard.
we will agree to disagree about later career works following hip-hop trends and similar beat sequencing, ect.
