Purchasing a New Television

I think your first piece of advice is to not listen to Americans if you are going to use a TV in Oz.

HDTV in Australia is DVB-T, MPEG2, 1080i at 50Hz. Pookie’s advice on the different technologies are wise (apart from the Hz business).

As this is my field, I would suggest that you go for a set that is a good monitor. The receiver in it, the DVB-T bit, is going to evolve, anyway. In Europe HD DVB-T is MPEG4, going to be DVB-T2 is some years. If you are watching cable or satellite, you would use other receivers with different specs and the built-in receiver is useless.

All the tech talk is less important, think of it as Lego: When you want to change a piece, you can.

Ok I have decided getting a 32 inch screen as any larger will be too big for the room(bedroom). I also have narrowed it down to 2 choices and I am also going too have a look in store today.

For those interested my picks are

  • samsung HDTV
    1366x768 Resolution
    10000 to 1 contrast ratio
    3 hdmi inputs

  • panasonic veira HDTV LCD
Same resolution the only difference is this one has only 2 inputs but 1pc input

look for 1080p, 100hz, aspect ratio of 50,000 - 1 or higher.if you see these numbers or better you won’t be disappointed.
check out samsung.

Thanks for proving my point.

this went over my head the first time. yes it is a review, and before i made the purchase obviously i did my own research. just thought i would post that after 6 weeks of ownership i am completely satisfied with the results of my purchase and the research i did.

Then why don’t you at least share the specific model of your TV? Stats alone mean jack shit and tell nothing of the overall quality of the product.

Oh and 50k to 1 aspect ratio? Think you are talking about dynamic contrast there… which btw also means nothing.

People have different needs for their screens (gaming, computer extension, HD content, etc…) so you need to present a comprehensive review of it’s individual aspects or at least include those that matter to me the most before I personally would be inclined to take your advice into consideration at all, but then again the OP didn’t specify worth a shit anyways.

I need the products I buy to be the best possible value for money I can get. If you are satisfied with what you got that’s cool, but it might not be what I am looking for and I need to know that before I make the purchase.

If you know the questions you need to ask, go Google and you’ll find your answers… if not then I suppose an internet forum works just as well as your standard tv salesman does.

Edit: Basicly this thread’s worth is at “how to buy a tv” not “what tv to buy” and if you don’t know or are unable to find this out yourself without community assistance, you’re a fucking tubefood sucking moron anyway.

I lols @ me.

oh dear…
seems you need a long and detailed review, well here goes:

it’s a samsung LE40A656 40"

it ticks all the boxes i listed earlier.

you can connect a dvd player to it

you can connect a games console to it

you can connect a surround sound system to it]

(all with HDMI leads)

when watching a blu-ray movie it’s like the screen is not even there.

you can connect your PC to it

it looks and sounds good, a bit like tv’s that cost a hell of a lot more.

what is a “fucking tubefood sucking moron” anyway?

To the OP: Don’t know if this was mentioned yet but one thing to consider in the Plasma vs LCD decision is that Plasma’s will pick up more glare. I would recommend LCD if your TV is in a more well lit room or if there’s say a window behind where the TV is positioned.

I went LCD for my bedroom TV because there is a big window right across from the TV. Glare hasn’t been bad at all, much better than my old box style TV (which was so bad I wouldn’t even bother watching TV sometimes because of the glare).

There are multiple possibilities, for example a person who gets most of his intellectual properties preprogrammed from his daily tv fix.

I have the same problem with my upstairs TV.

I wish someone would invent curtains.

I’m going to take my curtains down and put a thick black cloth along the backside so they will block the light better. Honestly though with the new TV there’s really almost no glare even when I was playing the PS3 on it during the middle of the day last weekend.
