Proper Debate - Head to Head Face-off

siouxperman,

I don’t have to judge him for his body of work. I want to be like the liberals, I want to play the part of the word police. He talks about killing cops hence he’s bad.

The shoe is on the other foot and you don’t like how it fits huh?

Now tell me about all those song writers that you would tolerate who talked negatively about homosexuals, the environment and all those other liberal hot buttons.

You’re transparent my friend.

As all the 20 something liberals line-up to stroke Jon stewart. Sooooo predictable…(yawn)

Ad hominem digs and recycled partisan one-liners aside, do you honestly think that, in isolation, Stewart’s argument is not convincing? I really doubt it.

He doesn’t talk about killing cops. That point makes all your other points invalid. Also, live up to your own standards.

Not ad hominem digs if they’re true. Now here is an assignment for you. I want you to do some research, you’re good at that right? Take a look at the demographic that Stewart attracts. Then get back to me with what you found. Let’s see if you are intellectually honest enough to look at the demograhics and post back about his audience.

Oh yes let’s split hairs shall we? Fair enough, implied violence to a police officers - Bad enough he shouldn’t be invited to the White House.

Guhu (pokes forehead with palm) do ya think he’s talkin bout given up that ther gun?

Ha ha…okay I’m mad at you now because I actually had to read this obnoxious piece of, um what do you call it? Poetry? Music? I have a better word for it but I don’t like to use that language I’ll save that for all of the “talented” cop hating rappers.

You and Michelle Obama can have that scum bag rapper.
At the end of the day your just stubborn and unwilling to hear what other people have to say because ya know it might mean your wrong GASP.

Anyone who doesn’t yet realize that a double standard exists is either stupid, or blinded by partisanship.

Now, my purpose in posting this was to find out how others would critique the exchange, which some did a I appreciate. The reason I quoted the two above lines, is because I saw them as fitting the typical dialog I see on this website, most specifically in the PWI section. Why does it become necessary for people to jump on condescension and insults to try to help prove their point (which I would argue only drives a further wedge between sides) instead of trying to hold to a higher standard of discussion; one which leaves insults and disrespect out of it?

It seems, at least to me and my experience on this site, that many are genuinely afraid of either being proved wrong or scared that their opinion/belief is, in fact, possibly not the correct/best one.

The people who complain about rapper the most are usually the least likely to listen to rap or understand it. Strange how that works. There is an untold number of idiots you could single out as bad influences, yet you rage at rappers like Common simply because of their association with Obama.

And it’s hilarious that outrage wasn’t there for Bono or Springsteen. The selective outrage is unbelievable.

If you can’t see the hypocrisy underlying Fox’s condemnation of this whole non-issue, then you are either mentally handicapped or blinded by terminal partisan hackery.

That said, I have always liked how these two can disagree on basically everything and still show each other a modicum of respect and a sort of weird, sharp-edged camaraderie.
Despite not liking your extreme left wing ways, I actually agree with this quote above.

Again, so much wrong with what Obama is doing and continues to do, yet partisan republicans like to harp on such non issues as Michelle Obama eating a cheeseburger, whether or not Obama can say the word “corpsmen” correctly, or Common visiting the Whitehouse.

Like everybody else you only quote the part that suits you. He follows that up a few lines later with:
“No time for that, cause there’s things to be done
Stay true to what I do so the youth dream come”

edit: that out of context line is about the only thing anyone has. I’m not saying the guy is the Pope; he’s just nothing that Fox news has made him out to be.
“I believe in heaven more than hell/Blessings more than jail/In the ghetto, let love prevail.”

Maybe I didn’t search hard enough, but 74 percent the Daily Show’s audience is between 18 and 49.

Not only the 20 something’s. Or are do you think that anyone under 50 is an idiot?

My 67 year old father likes Stewart. He also thinks that the republicans have all boarded the crazy train. He used to be much more conservative in his younger years. Anecdotal evidence is anecdotal though.

Conservatives just need to find someone who is funny and not just pissed off.

Sorry about the poor grammar, but am typing on an iPad.

Well tell me how many times would I be allowed to say the “N” word, or to call a homosexual a derogatory name in a song before that song was considered trash? The answer (in case you didn’t know that either) is ONCE. And that’s how it should be. And quite honestly I think threatening the life of a police officer is at least as bad as these.

Got it yet?

First of all it was not our assignment. Secondly you break out demographics more specifically than that. If you’re going to do another person’s assignment at least do it right. And it matters not who your grandfather likes (eye roll) I am talking about hard statistics.

Now run along.

Funny how you quoted the part about ad hominem attacks and conveniently ignored my question to you–partisan bullshit aside, do you honestly think that Jon Stewart’s point is not a valid one? Do you honestly believe that he isn’t right about the whole Springsteen, Dylan, Bono, Johnny Cash thing?

I agree. Though I would reserve the phrase “extreme left wing” for communists and the like, which I am absolutely not.

Well, first of all, you brought up the assignment. Multiple times. You have again and again dismissed the views of anyone you disagree with and also happens to be under the age of thirty as irrelevant. Really, the old, wise man persona has gotten old. Those under thirty don’t need to be treated gingerly and your outright dismissal of the 20 something’s is elitist at best.

SecondLy, I did acknowledge the anecdotal evidence. Or did your old man’s eys miss that?

Seriously, stop being such an elitist and writing off the opinions of anyone younger than you.

Thank you, my dear.

Been here, just not posting.

Do people just take any thread and argue it with insults and egos regardless of the purpose of the thread? Staying on topic shouldn’t be that big of a deal for adult human being. The purpose of this thread was to discuss and break down the methods used is debates/discussion and, in particular, critique the effectiveness of this one. It has since broken down into yet another thread of bickering over semantics and who can seemingly gain higher ground…that doesn’t bore anyone else?
