Preventative Metformin Use

I don’t feel Metformin. I see it in my vascularity and how much I am allowed to cheat with no fat gain or loss of abs.
My A1C is 5.3 I am not even close to being diabetic.
Yet Metformin (500mgx2/day) speeds up my metabolism allowing me to dump calories in my sleep.
Just so we are clear. I am no mega bodybuilder. I am 67 years old. My wife of 35 years says I look better than when I was 35. Will metformin help you at 30 something? I have no clue. It works f-ing wonders on us old farts, haha

Does it note increase your SHBG?

Did you feel tired and groggy when you started it?

Last night I took XR 500mg, still has sides but way better than the other…

I am careful, but almost certainly have type 2 diabetes in my future. Every male member of my father’s family that’s older than me has it, usually by my age (46). I was looking at it as a proactive thing. Unfortunately hypocalcemia is dangerous, it could literally kill me pretty quickly. Metformin can also cause hypomagnesemia and hypokalemia in rare cases. I wish it worked for me, it’s cheap and OTC where I am currently living. Oh well. Just diet and exercise left for me as far as the biabetes avoidance goes.

I read somewhere apple cider vinegard can have some of the metformin’s effects. I started taking it a few days ago like 2-3 table spoons per day

Can you not just take B12 shots? Screw the pills they are a joke.
I understand the calcium adsorption issue. There are drugs people with osteoporosis take to boost their calcium absorption, my wife takes them, have you looked into that or would that even help? If you know diabetes could be in your future you really should do everything to prevent that. Next to cancer there is no disease worse. Blindness. Having your feet cutoff. OMG

Berberine is OTC

Yes I can get berberine.

But why then everybody recommends taking metformin instead?

Maybe because metformin is US FDA approved. Not considered a herb or supplement.

With decades of testing and use.

I also have heard berberine has more side effects

I take metformin 500 Xr 2 a day. 180 pills cost me $1 through my insurance. am not about to switch. Though I read you can take both berberine and met together.

I’ve lost several pounds. I was 188- now about 183-184. Am 6’1"

My testosterone numbers declined about 100 points. Not sure I can connect to met directly but I think the chances are it did affect my total and free t.

I have no side affects I am aware of. I started taking 5/31. I am not prediabetes. Totally for visceral fat loss and maybe improve my lipid profile. Not sure if I should take long-term.

The long term stuff I read about met are very positive though. Anti cancer, etc

I do take B12 shots, I can buy 10k mcg of cyanocobalamin at the pharmacy for just over $2. Doesn’t really make a difference - I’m doing it just because I can mostly. I’m researching hypocalcemia to figure out if there is a separate issue I can fix or not. I was hypercalcemic for a very long time and didn’t even know, so I have several resulting health problems that mostly just require time to resolve. There is a strong probability that I will just be easily hypocalcemic from here on, and it is especially exacerbated by exercise. I can actually feel the low calcium in my muscles towards the end of a lifting session and it is my signal that I’m done. Hypo is better than hyper, by miles. It mostly means that I will end up on shots for the diabetes at some point, which isn’t the end of the world.

@hrdlvn - dude, you look better at 67 than I do at 42…haha. Great picture, looks like fun zooming through scenery like that.

I take methylcobalamin (sublingual that melts under your tongue in 30 secs) and get the exact same effect as B12 shots and it’s $6 on Amazon for a two month supply. It’s been a major game changer. You are right the pills are total BS and it’s amazing people write reviews on them like they actually work.

Holy crap I can’t believe you are 67 in that picture! Well done dude. I’m 35 and don’t look that good

@bcostigan41 @dextermorgan you two are too kind. Thank you.
These high tech escooters(not the cheap rentals) are a real kick and they haul ass.

@hrdlvn Your killing it man!

Can you explain a little but about this version of b12? Why its more potent than pills?

I was wondering if I push to get through the side effects if metformin hoping they pass how much b12 I need to take? In some places they state 1000mcg which seems quite a lot. I take now a very potent b complex that has 100mcg of b12. Its also written calcium should be taken

Have you tried berberine? Dies it cause the same defficiences like metformin?

Methylcobalamin is the active form of B12 while cyanocobalamin is a non active form. Methylcobalamin is a natural form of b12 attached to a methyl group that allows the body to absorb much more of the b12 faster than cyanocobalamin (normal b12 pills) which is a synthetic version attached to a cyanide group that needs to be broken down by the body.

Sublingual methylcobalamin feels like heroin compared to cyanocobalamin which feels like Tylenol to me. They are basically the same price $6 on Amazon. I did b12 shots for a while but found sublingual methylcobalamin gave me the same benefits and I felt basically nothing from cyanocobalamin. You stick it under your tongue and let it dissolve and the energy is almost instant.

Anyone with methylation issues (like the MTHFR gene variant C677T or A1298C) would get a lot more benfit from methylated forms of supplements like B12

I wonder if I have methylation issues then? How do you test for that?
