Poliquin on Gluten

I had IBS and it has substantially subsided after removing gluten from my diet.

Ridiculing him for using said passage as proof of the deleterious impact of wheat is not the same as ridiculing self-experimentation in general.

The problem is when one extrapolates what works best for them into some generalized recommendation for society as a whole.

My wife is gluten free (so I am 90% gluten free by association) and she has felt much better, not had stomach issues and has an increase in body comp.

A family friend of hers had pretty bad psoriasis… the doctor suggested that she try a gluten free diet and it DRASTICALLY helped her psoriasis.

Pretty interesting stuff. Obviously everyone is different but no one that I know who has cut out gluten has noticed any negative effects.

Very astute of you to associate these particular events. There is an indeed an autoimmune connection between Psoriasis and Celiac Sprue

Hey PowderPuff,

Im pretty sure in other parts of these forums you strongly reccommended this book to me regarding my cravings and binges. Have you changed your mind about the accuracy/quality of information in this book?

This is the book I thought was helpful in terms of understanding why you binge on certain foods, and how binge eating reinforces itself.

To clarify, I don’t eat a lot of wheat but I’m not going to eliminate it completely, at least not based on Wheat Belly. It is an interesting read, if you can get over some of his overreaching. I bake bread all the time for my family, and own my own wheat grinder.

I will agree that all the processed foods have to be contributing to so many people developing Type II Diabetes and obesity. Most people would probably be better off eating as if they are diabetic, keeping grains to a minimum. He has that part right, IMO.

“poor methodology” my ass! CR, you’re WAY over thinking this. No one is trying to replicate scientifically valid experiments–nor should they be. Non-rigorous self experimentation IS a valid process for determining if something is worth looking further into. it just does not allow you to claim “proof”.

Some people are FAR more susceptible to the placebo effect than others. I can you tell you that personally I’ve been training and manipulating my diet for over 25 years, and I KNOW when something is affecting me; so, for me, I’ll make my own decisions when science is unable to allow me to make them based on carefully controlled experiment.

Let the scientists hash the details out; in the meantime you’re not going to hurt yourself by eliminating gluten from the diet. having said that, I still don’t avoid gluten altogether. Yes I’ve given up flour based bread, but I still eat Ezekiel muffins, for example, which while sprouted DO still contain some gluten.

By giving up gluten you get an added bonus: most products containing significant amounts of gluten are not particularly physique friendly.

P.S., no I’m not “anti-scientific” or any other bullshit term meant to stop all discussion. In fact, I have degrees in Kinesiology and Exercise Science.

Please point out where I claimed that one would hurt themselves by eliminating gluten from the diet. Either here or in the livespills.

You won’t be able to, because I’m not opposed to individuals doing that. In fact, I never once claimed self-experimentation was not useful in and of itself for determining whether a food worked for one personally - ever.

The problem is when one assumes the results of one removing this (or any other) dietary element suddenly proves that the outlandish claims certain authors are now making, particularly without any sort of valid scientific case, are true.

As for credentials, they’re really not relevant to this discussion - seeing as the same poor arguments are being made by laypeople as well as medical doctors.
