CT, I am 12 weeks out this saturday from a show. I will be playing hockey about 8 weeks out 2x a week (I still play jr hockey I know this is not ideal for bodybuilding lol). I have been following a zero carb approach other than about 60g of carbs periworkout from Anaconda protocol. I know doing a lot of interval training is not the best idea when on a low carb diet so my question is what is the best way to do things periworkout before an hour of hockey that will not interfere too much with fat loss but will not eat up my muscle? I was thinking 2 scoops of workout fuel, or possibly just use the whole protocol if I can afford it, and I would not be lifting on those days. Thanks in advance.

Wow,… I’ll let Christian give you his thoughts on this, but I just wanted to weigh in saying that I hope you realize that your chances for injury go up substantially when you’re prepping for a contest. While my own strength never usually lags while dieting, my joints will ache a bit more, and I try to avoid anything ‘stupid’ in my day to day activities.
Good Luck!

I know the two sports do not particularly go hand in hand, however I thought CT had mentioned that one of his friends or clients plays hockey and competed in a show. Typically I would have done a show in june and my hockey season would have ended early april but an injury kept me out of the june show. I’ve started yoga and more stretching to stay healthy as well. Two great sports I figure I gotta try and squeeze them both in
I also would not be playing contact hockey until 2 weeks after the show so it’s more about the long cardio sessions of an ice time that I am worried about at that point. Thanks for the input Stu, always appreciated.
Yes, my training partner Nick played hockey while preparing for a contest. He also worked construction 60 hours a week. So it is certainly doable as long as proper recovery methods are used and if you listen to your body.
In fact, I don’t see two weekly hockey games as being more potentially catabolic than 4-6 weekly interval sessions.
Obviously reduce the amount of energy systems work accordingly.

True. And I find that the biggest injury hazard is not even the aching joints but rather the lack of focus and shortened attention span that goes along with the last stretch of dieting.
Just means that you gotta be extra careful.
