EXACTLY!
People are saying get a new job.Im all for that if he has somethng much better available. The OP said its the highest paid job he has had and he does nothing.Thats tremendous if u ask me.
Jobs are not easy to come by nowadays and it is much better than him working his ass off in some factory somewhere for minimum wage.
Most people hate their jobs, the OP just seems bored.
OP, get yourself some wireless internet for your laptop.im sure optus or telstra would have some good deals.

To be honest, I don’t know what kind of gratification one would get by having a job like this. Maybe I’m wired differently, but I’d rather take the job that might pay less but involves human interaction, is interesting, and provides me with opportunities to get to the next level.

Assuming, of course, you can’t, for whatever reason, just read books.[/quote]
I do read, however lately I have only managed to be able to read fiction. I was reading some self development books but after a while I sort of lost interest and I find my mind wandering when I read, and read the same line like 20 times. I used to be real big on that shit too.
The worse thing is that I know I’m wasting my time, but I’m having a hard time doing anything about it

Well there is no career gratification from this job, thats for sure. And trying to change your sleeping patterns every few days is fucking annoying, and it makes it hell to lift some days.
Earning $40/hour while doing nothing has it perks though, for now its helping me get out of debt fast as well as some extra cash aside. My last job was in a bank, heaps of interaction(too much even) but I actually found that more boring.
There are guys at work who have completed bachelor degrees while doing the same job as me. Probably a little much for me, but at least they could study without being a poor ass student.

This… getting a bachelors degree with the amount of time you have free would be easy, and worthwhile…
That, or like someone else (i think px said) psp / laptop with internet…
Or, start doing ghetto workouts around the office and eating really big and become a monster even faster !!!

No kiddin.
Holy fucking titties.
I would kill to be able to get paid that much to be bored. I would relish being bored in that situation.
No offense OP…but many people would die for a job like that. I understand boredom, trust me. Being told to stand by, hurry up and wait, etc. But you’re allowed to eat, use your laptop, learn new languages/skills, read, do ghetto workouts if you so please…what about this job is bad?
Set a timetable: eat a certain times, read your fiction books for a certain time, read personal development books for a certain time. go for a wank (no time limit, enjoy)… play your games on laptop for a certain time.
Be disciplined with you time. Have a routine. Oh yeah and work when you have to. Give the things your doing meaning, when you have meaning, things are always better. This is fact.
LoL, you didn’t say it was $40/hr; that changes everything.

+1
good post. This is wisdom
I was in a similar position and i started studying the stock market, and eventually ended up trading stocks pretty pro. That way i was always making more money than what the job payed.
How the hell did you get a job like this? I get paid $8/hr and I’m bored (kind of) sometimes, but my human interaction is high. I’m a receptionist. It sucks because I can’t let my mind wander without worrying about being alert and greeting people in and out. I actively tried to get this job too, since I know how much working my ass off for $8/hr sucks.
So, yeah, how did you procure this position?
VonStinkle: Playin’ the system. Niiiice.

Mainly because this job provides little in the way of growth - through the job itself that is. My training for this job on my very first shift took a whole 45 minutes. You know most jobs give you some skills, communication/negoiation/conflict resolution etc but I could do this for 5 years and have no more to show as a person then when I started, other then what I spent my time doing myself.
Its not a bad job, it just doesn’t lead to anything.
And don’t forgot I’m talking $40/hr $AU, don’t know what that is in $USD ($30 maybe?), plus I think wages over here are higher anyway, but so is everything else.
By the way Paul, great suggestion. I actually use to do something similar, it never occurred to me to use that approach at work.

Luck really. I did a security course December 08 for shits and giggles and this was the first and only job I applied for (I have a pretty good resume) and the boss just put me in this position, so I just kind of fell into it.
I used to work on a counter(bank teller), fucking hated it, always looking professional, couldn’t get up to take a piss, being on display all day. But damn, I don’t think I’d get out of bed for $8/hr.
