No smoking in bars.
Seatbelt laws.
No talking on hand held cell phones while driving.
Now a ban on trans fat.
Look I’m not saying the above are bad ideas.
But, what happened to personal responsiblity?
ENOUGH WITH THE FRIGGIN LAWS!

Re: Choosing what people want to eat.
Is there anyone that actually WANTS to eat trans fats?
Mmm… I could really go for some trans fats right now.

PPL need to take a little responsibility in their own life diet included.

Agreed.
I do believe people need to take responsibility for what they eat/do.
However,I also believe some foods just aren’t and shouldn’t be consumable.
There’s a fine line between food on the market and poison.
If we put rat poison on the market I’m sure people wouldn’t be arguing about taking it off the shelves, why not pull this dangerous,man-made fat off of the shelves too?
I think it’s sad how the FDA won’t do anything about trans fat,but they’ll take Ephedra off of the shelves.
I’m sure more people will die of heart disease and heart attacks, due to their high trans-fat-rich diets, than anyone did ephedra.
Just my 2 cents.
I hear you, but then make the government stop selling cigarettes or dip or alcohol.
Ban those first, then worry about banning foods…it just seems ass backwards to me.
(Not that I want them to ban alcohol by any means. At all. Ever.)
Good point, but a little alcohol, maybe even a serving a day of red wine isn’t gonna kill you nor give you a disease.
Trans-fat,however,is deadly and has no nutritional benefit to the body that I know of and can cause heart disease and many other problems. Right now I’m looking at diabetes and trans fat consumption.
You’re irish,I don’t blame you for not wanting them to ban alcohol.

Ha. Well, of course.
But take cigarettes for example…they’re still legal in all fifty states, and all they do is kill you.

Guns?
Steroids?
Good Lord people, you are supposed to be goddamn Americans! This totalitarian fascistic nonsense is repugnant to Liberty!..Has the failed Prohibition act been so long ago we need to repeat it’s painful and deadly lessons? Who the hell made the flippin’ mayor of NYC God? Ben Franklin and the Founding Dads are doing at least 2400 RPM in their graves…
I read that as trans fat bieng responsible for those 50000 deaths a year, not heart disease. I’m going to assume the author intended the reader to make that mistake and not that he doesnt write good.
americans dont have any (i know, all generalizations are false). why do you think they slow down every time they pass a cop on the freeway even if they are not speeding?

I’m confused about what slowing down when not speeding has to do with personal responsibility.
the “write good” thing was on purpose. and im not a writer.
i was getting at our personal responsibility to follow the laws set before us, regardless of if we agree with them. people instinctively change their behaviour when they see an authority, which tells me they knowingly do the wrong thing so frequently that they are conditioned to do so. i guess it wasnt the best supporting statement. it was just fresh in my mind.

I have the personal responsibility to do what I believe is right, NOT what the law tells me is right.
Slavery was once protected by the law too. Doesn’t mean that it should have been followed.

You’re right.
They do kill you,but people know they kill you and it says so on the box when you buy them.
I’m sure there are a lot of people who know nothing about nutrition, who wouldn’t want trans fat put in their food.

Learn. Or let them die. Ignorance isn’t a good thing anyway.
And I’m not being argumentative either, I’m just saying that there’s a lot of hypocrisy in this law, and I hate people that don’t take any responsibilty for what they do.

I agree with you too.
People should take responsibility, but unfortunately they usually don’t.
People are always looking to blame someone else for why they got fat,why they got cancer, why they got diabetes.
Them and their lack of knowledge(taking the time to learn) is the only thing that got them sick. Sure, there are food companies out there that only want to increase profits and will do whatever they can to do so. They’ll put the cheapest ingredients in their food and use unhealthy, cheap ingredients like HFCS or trans-fat so they can make more money.
But in the end the only person who made themselves eat that product are themselves.
And I’m not justifying what the food companies do too. I do think that they should be held responsible for putting ingredients in their products that are poison, when they should be safe for human consumption.
It is the FDAs job to ban dangerous ingredients like trans-fat.
There is a line between FREEDOM TO EAT and SAFE TO EAT.
Yes,we have a right to eat sugar and candy bars. Why?Because it is the over consumption of sugar that causes health problems, not sugar.
Trans fat, however, is dangerous itself and is a deadly ingredient.
NYC has the right to ban it because trans fat is poison, not food.
You guys who say there are no benefits to transfats are being a bit silly. You think we decided to create an extraneous industrial process just for giggles?
Zap Branigan wrote:
I disagree with equating alcohol with trans fats.
No good comes from trans fats. We don’t drink them to feel good or relax. They are a cheap artificial “food” that has proven to be far more harmful than originally thought. Time to remove them from the food supply.
No one will be smuggling in trans fats when they are banned.
And no one is really going to miss them either. Whereas people would miss alcohol and cigars.

The benefit is that it’s solid at room temperature and easier to work with. That’s really about it.
