Quality or smut? I honestly don’t even think like that. I like Nip/Tuck because they actually do bring up real issues of running a practice (only with EXTREME circumstances) and they actually show parts of surgery that appear close to the real thing. It isn’t my favorite show but it holds my interest because of those two factors. I like CSI because of the science angle, even though they could stand to go deeper…but I guess they might lose their core audience.
As far as “quality”, Lost is the one that I really got into. Their writers kick ass. Smallville is another one simply because I think it was the best retelling of a Superman story that could be put together. Bringing Christopher Reeves in before he died just sealed it for me.[/quote]
I don’t really think like that, either, that was just the best way I could put it. All the commercials I see for Nip Tuck involve lots of t&a. I’m not averse to that, but I was under the impression that it was a majority of the show, and if that was the case, better could be had elsewhere IMO. I’m in complete agreement with you on Smallville. Lost may be great, but it’s too ‘middle of the road’ magic/fantasy for my taste. c’est la vie.
Dude, don’t get me wrong, I like the shows you mentioned (haven’t seen Veronica Mars), but if you think ‘My Name Is Earl’ and ‘Lost’ aren’t rotting your brain, you need to seriously evaluate your definition of rotting.
You’re killing me Smalls (just a quote from Little Giants that I liked). I could debate TV shows until the cows come home. Veronica Mars season 1 comes out on DVD on Oct. 11 ( I think ). Once you get past the teenage girl set in High school, the show is damn fun. Men and Women both seem to dig it, even Lindelof (creator/producer of Lost ) wants more people to watch it, even though it airs at the same time as Lost.
I understand everyone who likes the convience of shows on DVD, I own a few myself (can I plug Firefly here?) but usually I use my DVR and I get the same convience. By the way, what a time saver, just using a dvr cuts my TV time by 25%.

Don’t get me wrong about 24 either, a “bad” fantasy show where people get shot and beat up is better than a show with “real” whiny people stuck on an island or two people getting married or two families swapping wives, etc. any day of the week in my book. It’s just too many flaws to call 24 a (24K?) diamond, IMO.
If I ever got cable, it would be for the DVR (I’d probably build my own though).
Do you consider Nip/Tuck to be ‘quality TV’ or smut? People here seem to like it and I’ve heard buzz elsewhere, but not having watched it, it just seemed like smut. I ask because (to me) it seemed out of character for you. Not being judgemental, just wondering if the DVDs are worth owning/watching.

dude! We watch all the shows you just named. We have Lost Season 1 on DVD. embarrassed And we never miss Nip/Tuck. It sucks you in. Smallville last night kicked ass!
Three years ago when I was a freshman in college I did a sociology report on the ill’s of TV in society… I actually dressed in all black tactical gear, grabbed the two TV’s I had in the house and went out in the woods and blew holes in them with my 12 guage. I filmed the whole thing and then presented it to my class. Well, needless to say that my peers didn’t want to converse with me after that…So yea, I agree that they are THE downfall of western civilization. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that even if you only watch a couple of shows it’s not that bad. Advertisements ARE bad! Grab your nuts and disconnect that damn cable! Rent that shit on DVD instead. Football? why not go to a bar and actually socialize with humans?

Yes, I’m an elitist. That’s why I also work out regularly, am becomming college educated, eat healthy wholesome foods, read lots of non-fiction books, attempt to stay up-to-date on current events, etc…I don’t know you, so I can’t comment on you personally. I have read your posts in the past and never thought anything negative about you…BUT, yes, I do think I’m better than you because you watch TV and I don’t. For that I apoligize. But like I said, I’m an elitist…If you are unnaware that something is harmfull to you then you can claim ignorance. If, however, you are aware of the ills of an activity yet you continue to indulge in the activity then you are willfully irresposible for yourself and/or family. Weakness is never a good thing…If you honestly feel that TV watching has NO ill effects than please just disregard me as some internet nut-job.
I wasn’t really addressing you in particular up above, but I decided to break things down a bit more for you anyway.

As do I.
Did that several times.
Do that when I’m trying to thin out.
Do that. I read fiction, too. Are you silly enough to think that all non-fiction is automatically more worthwhile than all fiction, in the same way you think the internet is somehow more worthwhile than TV?
Do that. TV can actually help this, but you wouldn’t know that.
So, I can do everything you can do. Not only that, I can do it while raising two great kids, having a career (not a college job) and having a great marriage. Yet I still have time to watch TV. I must be ten times the man you are.
Please, explain to me how TV harms my family.
I feel 100 times guiltier about the time I waste on T-mag than the time I spend watching TV.
Again, you aren’t the pretentious douchebag I was referring to. You seem like a clueless, idealistic college kid. No shame in that. The people I was referring to are the ones who responded to this thread with some variation of, “I agree TV sucks. That’s why I only watch…”, as if the fact that they like the show somehow redeems it.

Come on, doogs… you don’t think that commercials suck the brains right out of your skull?
SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY!!! Only this WEEKEND!! YOU… CAN’T… MISS… THE SAVINGS GOING ON RIGHT NOW!!!
If I wanted somebody to tell me what to do all the time, I would’ve stayed married to my harpy of an ex-wife. And bought more astroglide to jerk off with.
All a commercial does is try to command you. They will use varying types of appeals to you, but they all try to make you do something.
Have you ever just listened to the female voice-over for an ice cream commercial? Not WHAT she was saying, but HOW? It’s like the most filthy seductive voice you can ever hear. If a woman who does ice cream commercials ever said to me: “baby, I want you to nut all over my face… make me regret calling you again after you stole that money out of my purse last weekend…” I would definitely make a mess of myself right then and there.

That is like saying, “If you honestly feel that EATING FOOD has NO ill effects than please just disregard me as some internet nut-job”. Anything done in excess has ill effects. I watch news commentary more than anything and probably spend less than an hour total each day looking at the television during the week. If you view this as causing “ill effects” then you need serious mental help. Yaaay, you’re in college! I’ve been there, loved it, lived it, and have the tee-shirt to prove it. Hell, I had a shoe box filled with panties also but I was beginning to think keeping them was a little juvenile so those got tossed out years ago.
I think avoiding all tv (considering the source for up to date news info) on purpose is nearly as crazy as sitting in front of one all day. Neither make any rational sense. It is simply another form of media. What was that, you ONLY read non-fiction? Do you want a cookie? I think fiction is a very valuable resource. If you don’t fuel your imagination, you won’t be one of the inventors, bringers of new ideas, or anyone who comes up with anything that hasn’t been done before. You are becoming a computer. Do you expect a reward for that? I read fiction as well as non-fiction. You claiming to be an elitist doesn’t justify any of the actions you’ve listed in that regard. How does avoiding imagination make you “better”? Wouldn’t that make you “less than”?
Please refrain from typing this bullshit again. Reading your post was painful. Tell us about how elite you are AFTER you graduate and actually hold down a career with consistancy on top of maintaining your efforts in the gym along with career advancement while also helping others reach positive goals in life as well. That will make you “elite”.

True. But they are just friggin’ annoying. It’s like eating a salad of poison ivy… yeah, I could just sack up and chew through the blisters in my mouth, but why do it to myself in the first place? Just use normal lettuce, ya know? Find something better to do than watch some idiot box try to tell me what to do, ya know?
Besides, doesn’t cable suck anyway? How many people have posted in this thread lamenting how lame it is to have cable TV?

What Sugarfree said, except I now give away books, CDs, and movies that I havent used in the last year. With that in mind, Im now closer to Rubberbubbas tv-surfing style, but with all media. It better be good or its not even going to get attention from me.
I used to watch “X-Files” without fail. Until the last season (that one sucked) I have not had a “can’t miss” show since that. My son and I love watching “Nature” together on Sunday evenings. We don’t watch TV often but is nice and relaxing when we do. Nothing wrong with that.
TV’S not bad. A lot of the stuff on it’s bad. I’ve never been to the moon, but I’ve seen Neil Armstrong walking on the moon. I never understand when people say they don’t watch tv, just DVD’s. What’s the difference between TV and movies? One’s longer without commercials. Saying TV’s bad is like saying grocery stores are bad because they sell junk food. I like The Family Guy as much as anyone, but I don’t consider that “quality tv”. It’s entertainment. Like anything, too much TV or the wrong type of TV is bad. Why don’t people brag about not having a radio or being on-line? There’s just as much crap out there as on TV. But way more porn on-line(that’s a good thing).
I’ve got to say that the internet is equally destructive, timewise. Im not a big TV fan but whenever I have something I need to get done and I don’t feel like doing it, I find myself at the computer, wasting time.
