Nigeria Complains about District 9

The movie didn’t depict Nigerians as bad people… it depicted those particular Nigerians as bad people. Slight difference.

Exactly.

There are countless films where people from all countries and backgrounds are displayed in a bad light.

That isn’t quite the same. As we just saw from some of the more racist comments on those articles about the false rape accusation (before everyone knew it was false), when black males in this country are accused of a crime, somehow they seem to become representations of an entire race to many people not of that race. I am not saying all people think like this, but rarely is a white guy accused of a crime…and then all white people looked at as having a problem with that issue. I don’t know how things work worldwide, but I do know that few white people in this country truly have to worry about being looked at in a negative light because a random white person is seen negatively.

That is the benefit of being the majority.

It would be nice if it were all the same, but it isn’t currently.

In my experience, where there are black people living in a certain country (minority or not), you get that same generalisation you speak of. I can’t say exactly where this has stemmed from (slavery, racism from decades/centuries back, etc.) but it is true, no doubt about that. Until we evolve out of seeing “colour” between eachother - which the majority of people haven’t - I think it will continue to be a problem.

I can see how people from outside Africa could assume that all Nigerians are like that because of their portrayal in the film and the way people tend to generalise about black, people as you mentioned. In that case I agree that such a complaint is justified, I never really considered it this way.

I would hope that most people would see that this [District 9] is a sci-fi movie and that this isn’t an attack on the people of Nigeria.

O’Hehir: You know, these images are pretty uncomfortable, especially for Americans who tend to be so careful in public discussions of race: Here’s a white guy from South Africa making a movie with scary, murderous black African villains.

Blomkamp: Sure, I’m totally aware of that. Unfortunately, that’s the reality of it, and it doesn’t matter how politically correct or politically incorrect you are. The bottom line is that there are huge Nigerian crime syndicates in Johannesburg. I wanted the film to feel real, to feel grounded, and I was going to incorporate as much of contemporary South Africa as I wanted to, and that’s just how it is…

…Another part of recent South African history that isn’t world news is that the collapse of Zimbabwe has introduced millions of illegal Zimbabwean immigrants into South African cities. â?¦ Now you have this powder-keg situation, with black against black …[W]e woke up one morning to find out that Johannesburg was eating itself alive. Impoverished South Africans had started murdering impoverished Zimbabweans, necklacing them and burning them and chopping them up.

I don’t even remember making the investment, but what a nice guy he was to remind me so that I wouldn’t lose out on my million bucks. Those Nigerians are really something special![/quote]

Yes, the xenophobia was getting out of hand there - I believe things have calmed down though. That’s what you get when ex-president Mbeki teams up with Robert Mugabe and starts helping them out - giving them electricity and money while letting the South Africans suffer.

Nigerians do not have a great reputation there and it’s no secrect, so while the director isn’t trying to cover this up, I still don’t think he is attacking the Nigerian population as a whole.

Listen very carefully, i know im wasting my time but still, You have to recognize yourself as racist. You think in racial terms. you see color and racism because it’s how you think. So you find that which you are looking for and that is…Racism. Why? Because you’re a closet racist with communist tendencies and certainly a SUPERIORITY complex. I call them as i see them.

What gives me the right to speak to about racism? Oppression? Slavery? Look up where the word “slave” even comes from. Learn to see that other suffered too and somehow live their life not burdened by the BS you’re burdened with. It only exists in your head.

Personally I’ve knows several Nigerians. They were like all people of this planet. Nice Family men. One a Christian with a family and Another a Muslim named Muhammad also with a family.

They worked hard, were polite and nice. I have nothing bad to say about Nigerians. I know there are bad apples but they are representing only themselves and not their country. So who cares about bad apples they are everywhere. I don’t see people in groups like true racists.

The movie was correct in the portrayal of that particular Nigerian Demographic. It’s kinda how it is over there in alot of places. Sucks but it’s true.

You’re a fucking idiot. The WORLD thinks in “racial terms” and again I pointed out a specific example that recently happened that not one person who read those comments can actually deny.

You would not see comments about most or all white men being prone to rape women if the situation had been reversed…yet there were many comments saying things along those lines about black men when that story first broke as far as comments beneath those articles.

People like you tend to deny things like that.

A friend told me that the cat food was an analogy for alcohol that the blacks of District 6 became dependent on.

Also that when shrimp fishing, cat food is used as bait, hence the derogatory term “prawn” for the aliens.

In not all countries blacks have such a bad reputation as the USA, in the country I’m from, there are about 30,000 blacks in all. They are seen as poor, and vice-prone, (which is pretty much based in fact, many of them are poor and thus alcoholics) but their image is also that of loyal, dedicated, more integratable than other segments of our population that are of lighter skin tone and domestic origin.

Blacks are generally seen as more integrated, and honorable than segments of the Amerindian population, and more trustworthy than rural white-Indian mixed race people. They are over represented in military special forces units especially, and they are a minority of less than 1%.

I don’t really see why the Nigerians are offended by the film, the film is pretty much accurate. I’m sure anyone who has lived in south africa who is not in some sort of racial denial would confirm this. I’ve been to Spain and there are Nigerians all over the place trying to scam, and these are people who also statistically account for a much larger proportion of rapes than other immigrants do, and overall the immigrants carry a disproportionate of the rape and violent crime total. Those are facts, not defamations, if people don’t like the facts, take actions in your community to stop it. Change the facts through cultural and social evolution, not attacking and crying racist at anyone who says the truth.

And to boot, in Spain, my country and our Eastern and Northern brother countrymen, account for about half the prison population. So you can say whatever you want, but people of my descent are seen in the same light.

I have seen the movie yet, but hopefully will soon.

But without seeing it let me tell you guys something about the Nigerians living in SA, they are the scummiest most immoral and unethical people out! They run the drug trade in SA and I’m not talking weed or E or “soft” stuff. Crack, coke and heroin are what they deal. They kidnapp people who recently left rehab, tie them down and inject them. They trade with mothers, who they’ve taken everything from already, drugs for young girls (10-13). Those girls then become their prostitutes.

Added to this they organise a large part of the violent crime in SA. They don’t do it themselves but get their little drugged up “slaves” to do it while they watch. And this is just the tip of the ice berg, I could keep going on about all their other activities (Scams, squatting, corruption, human trafficing ect)

And this isn’t some little racist rant either. I don’t see people for their skin colour, and hate it when people do. But in SA everyone hates the Nigerians be it black, white, asian or mixed race. When we had the xenophobic attacks last year, the first people to get f*$#ed up were the Nigerians.

And Prof X here in SA, black males are by far in the majority, yet they are also always suspects. Even with black cops. Why I don’t know

Oh ok. So the world is like that and that means it’s ok for you or anyone to be like that too. Yay for the Sheep and the easily led. Ofcourse you found a specific example, because thats a type of example you were looking for. Duuuhhh. Exactly what i was saying is your fault.

You perpetuate the racist mentality by actively participating in it and making it a part of your life. When you change, the world changes around you. Amazing. Give it a shot. That type of thinking is a cancer that eats you up over time. Nothing good comes from division and separation and mistrust. Nothing. EVER.

But you’re beyond reach. I know your type very well. Oddly they also profess to be believers in God. What a curious dichotomy on beliefs and missing a point.
