Like I said, I have a reservation at Knights Inn in Newark. It’s only $65 a night, which is perfect for my budget.
used2bhot, do you know which train I take from New York to get to Newark? And where I’d catch it?
Go to Penn Station, take a NJ Transit train that goes through the Broad Street station in Newark. The Morris and Sussex line or Montclair line. Go to NJTransit.com and you can get schedules, fares, etc. It’s a decent site. One thing they’re not great about is informing people about peak and non-peak fares. It shouldn’t be an issue if its only on the weekend though. Buy your tickets before boarding because they will charge you $5 if you buy on the train. Another thing, if you get to Penn St (NY, not Newark) there are often long lines for tickets in the NJ Transit portion of the terminal (has tannish marble floors, modern lighting, etc). There is a larger bank of ticket machines in the older Amtrak section of the station - look for the really big departure board hanging from the ceiling. If you’re not comfortable with the machines, there are ticket windows there as well. Most people I see wait in long lines in the NJ Transit terminal because they presumably don’t know about the other area. Hope this helps.

Thanks very much. As you can probably tell, this will be my first time staying in New York on my own. I went with my parents in middle school and I went a few months ago to meet a friend while she was there, but I didn’t stay overnight. I got to NYC at 7am and left at 2am that night.
OneEye,
I checked to make sure I was sending you to the right train station, but I couldn’t find any Knight’s Inn - I was thinking of a different motel. Are you sure it’s a Knight’s Inn? Their website doesn’t show any in Newark either. I would suggest calling them and asking which train station to use. If it’s near Penn station in Newark, you actually have more choices because you can take the PATH train from the 33rd St station (one block east of Penn St NY at 33rd and 6th) as this also goes to Penn St Newark. The NJ Transit lines are different for Newark Penn than they are for Broad street as the train line splits just before Newark. Sorry for any confusion.

Ah, I double checked the address and it’s in Elizabeth, NJ. I think that’s pretty close to Newark. The front desk guy said there was a train very close by that goes to NYC.
