Chillain, what info are you interested in?

I don’t know about US Law, but here if you have a sentence under 2 years you don’t go to prison but serve your sentence in a jail (I think they’re called Detention centres here).

I know OP is probably trolling, but is there a way to get thrown in a max security prison when you only have a 1 year sentence?
Got any general info on jails and prisons in Canada?
Not a whole lot but I do know a little.

I know about the 2 year rule ^ from reading in the local paper about judges giving “2 years less a day” sentences so the convicted will not have to do their time in a penitentiary. Normally it’s given to first time offenders.

In the US Blacks make up a disproportionate % of the prison population compared to their makeup in the US population right? Here that minority group is Aboriginals. Something ridiculous like 5% of Canadians are aboriginal but 1 in 5 incarcerated Canadians are Aboriginal (those aren’t exact figures that’s an approximation).

Capital punishment was abolished decades ago and even when we had it, it was sparsely used.

Life in prison here is 25 years

You would probably guess the worse crime rates in the country would be in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary or Vancouver right? Nope it’s Regina, Sasketchewan heh.

Most Canadians imprisoned abroad are in US jails mainly for drug related convictions.

Jails are privately run in the US? Here they’re all publicly run by Corrections Canada.

The most notorious criminal in Canadian history was probably Robert Pickton a pig farmer from British Columbia. He killed dozens of prostitutes and fed their bodies to his pigs.

That’s all I can think of off the top of my head. Are you into prison documentaries and related stuff? If so you should check out this show called Banged up Abroad.

I believe racial segregation does exist in Canadian prisons as well. I’ve read about aboriginal prison gangs.

I suppose its the sociological stuff I find most interesting, ie. the structure and conduct codes that emerge in a maximum security setting.

I remember reading Pete Earley’s expose on USP Leavenworth way back when; he described it as “an enormous warehouse of the most loathsome, a prison where society isolates men for whom it no longer has any hope – only fear”

So its prob about wondering just how deep that dark rabbit hole goes…

For Canada that would be the SHU(from what I was told when I was inside).

I can corroborate what Raj said about the aboriginals being the largest demographic of inmates in Canada(again from experience in MB).
IME, do your own time, be respectful, and things should be fine. But if you’re some loner that looks funny, that probably won’t work.
This one native inmate wanted to buy my Jordan basketball shorts for $5 or something like that, I laughed at him and said something along the lines of ‘how about $500? That’s about the mark-up for drugs right?’.

So, explain? So far I heard from another poster that its actually a spanish guy named Jesus (pronounced hey-zeus).

Originally I thought you meant religiously.

Now I’m not so sure, and you aren’t clarifying at all.

Was Jesus’ junk… in your trunk??

I’ve never been to prison, but have 2 really good buddies who’ve done a fair amount of time, one in fed prison for 18 months and the other in state for a combined almost 6 years spread over 2 sentences. There are apperantly subtle differences, but the main thing I gathered is it’s way more structured than you’d imagine, and there’s a HUGE emphasis on respect. Very few things “just happen”. This clowns story is bogus.

One thing I’ve heard about prison is it is smelly as hell. In US prisons you are only required to shower once a week (they are offered daily) and apparently many only shower the minimum. This from a documentary I watched recently.

LOL The “Penile” system eh?

Edit: awwwww shit, when I first entered this thread I wasn’t given links to the following pages.

Jesus gave me a great penile system.

Are you sure it wasn’t just stefano_gym coming to protect you?

Ive never served time, but i went on one of those “scared straight” jail tours while in high school at a county jail, and thats the first thing you notice. It smells like straight ass. The officer giving the tour said the inmates are suposed to get a shower a day, but that doesnt always happen, and there arent many toilets (1 toilet gets used by a bunch of people) and they get backed up all the time.

On another note, they had small tvs set up outside of these large cells, that had 3 cells inside of them, with like 15 guys in each big cell. The officers said they control what the inmates got to watch, and I noticed all of them were on soap operas.

For a really good read, from the PoV of a small white guy serving time in a Nevada prison, see - You Got Nothing Coming: Notes from a Prison Fish by Jimmy A. Lerner. Truly educational, and v well written.
