Music Player for Working Out

i like the mini because it is light and relatively small and i can choose the music. most of my gym gear has pockets round the back which fit this perfectly.

i like the bigger one (whatever it is called) for its capacity but find it too heavy for the gym. it also makes grunty noises (i don’t know much about this stuff but that suggests to me it has moving hardware parts) so i’m a bit scared of jolting it or slamming it with a barbell as i have a tendancy to do…

i’ve been finding i go through headphones like nobodies business… i’ve learned not to buy ones with controls on the wires because the controls get slammed by the bar when i clean. i also find the plastic starts to kind of… disintegrate over time. from sweat, i suppose. the worst thing is that they always crap out because the wires go. one of the speakers gives out. i think it is because i pull it around by the headphones a lot and it dangles. or maybe because shoving it in pockets bends the wires a bit much down close to the pod.

i got some of the bug ones with the plastic bit that goes behind my ear and this holds them secure. got waterproof ones so will see whether that protects the plastic from sweat disintegration (since i can wash them now). still figure the wires will give out first. probably should just get cheap ear buds and suck up the fact that i need to replace them about every 3 months…[/quote]

Good post. I like the shuffle but the limitation on the headphones has always been a problem. Sweat, wires, dropping off when doing rows, dynamic movements etc. You’re an O-Lifter?

I’ve thought about the Sony ones that go behind the ear so that it doesn’t get in the way.

Sennheiser CX300 in-ear headphones and a Sansa Clipp works out pretty well. Clipp has expandable storage via microSD card, it’s cheap, and it acts just like a usb drive (which means no problems with Linux or special software).

Mine has been pretty durable… it got left out in the rain and after taking it apart (not recommended), drying it out, and re-soldering the power switch, it is still going strong.

Do you have a phone? My Env3 is a great music player. I don’t weight lift with headphones though so not sure how well that would work. Do hike and do hill sprints with it and it works fine.

Testy1- I dont want to use my phone as I dont want to ruin my phone by dropping a dumbell on it.

Grettiron- Thanks mate. Ill have a look into that.

Xanderbuilt- Alexus does lots of O-lifting.

You stole that from me.

Admit it, Missy!

I recommend the Sansa Clip. It’s small, simple, and tough. I’ve even run it through the washing machine and it still works. Plus it only cost me $40 US.

I have a creative zen I’ve been using for 3 years or so now. I’ve had no problems with it. I like that it has buttons and isn’t all touch screen. That way when it’s in my pocket I can reach down and skip songs or pause it without even looking at it.

i run the wires down under my t-shirt / singlet so if the earbuds do pop out when i’m doing an explosive lift (or on a bike) they still won’t get tangled or fly too far. most of my training singlets have handy pockets outside at the back that fits the mini perfectly (but then chicks workout gear is probably better designed in that respect). can’t put anything in trackie pockets because the bar slams into it for snatches / cleans.

i guess i am pretty hard on it… drop the pod down my top dangling it by the buds… try and pull the pod back up my top by the buds… sometimes it does get jolted out of my back pocket and fly across the room lolz. i’ve never had any problems with the mini, though, but do go through a lot of headphones (left earpeace dies like it isn’t connecting properly down close where you plug it into the pod - happened about 6 times now).

best thing about the mini is the battery life IMHO. to the best of my knowledge phones are a long way behind in that respect… the fancier you go with unnecessary graphics features the more you need to compromise in battery life too, it seems (e.g., the battery life on i-pod touch is sucky suck suck).

The best mp3 player I’ve had/heard of for battery life has got to be the Cowon iAudio… 5 maybe? It’s been a while. That thing was half battery and I had to charge it once a week with everyday use. I bought 2 but broke them both thru my own stupidity.
