This needs its own thread…
Or we can, like, end the hypersexualization of our societies and reintroduce obscenity laws. (I know, terrible.)
Freedom without virtue is meaningless. Along with this view, If we actually believed it we might start punishing people in the media who lie to us, sometimes even so badly that it puts us in harm’s way! .
I think you probably know my opinion on this from the other thread. Legislation is meaningless if the will and ability to enforce it isn’t present. It’s something that has to be dealt with on a micro level such proper education and upbringing of children.
I’m not familiar with US laws but I’m pretty sure you have obscenity laws that cover lots of things that are just not enforced. Probably look up your individual state laws for a start.
Aight.
Long thread here. Anyone have any ideas on what should happen to media people and government agents who endanger us by lying?
I’m not touching this with a 10 foot pole lol. Already had this same conversation countless times IRL over 2 decades and some ended up in screaming matches.
Day of the Noose, after a trial of course.
@Beyond_Beyond That’s crazy bro! You mean like how it was depicted in that crazy book?!
I cannot believe… it’s 2020… and people like you… ![]()
I haven’t read the book,I know nothing about it, just a catchy title. A fair trial(they can be judged innocent) if the facts prove it. People will lie and abuse authority if there are no consequences. They don’t even bother to admit when they get it wrong, they ignore it and wait until the masses forget or are distracted by the next scandal. Our society’s have gone soft, that’s why things are so shitty now.
I just googled “Day of the Noose(Rope)”, and saw what it was about. I can see why you might have raised an eyebrow of concern. Not my intention to reference historical mob violence or neo nazis. I’d just like to see some of these perpetrators held to account for their actions and deter others from thinking they can get away with it too.
I know. I was joking around. I’m not against punishment for those who put our safety and lives in danger btw.
Being judged innocent seems like too high of standard to not be punished. I think the US got it right with guilty / not guilty. Innocent is just to high of a standard for a defendant to show for it to be a fair trial. One should have to be shown guilty to be punished for a crime, right?
Twitter is in trouble. So is Facebook. They tried to censor the news, now they became the news. Senators and Congressman now want to subpoena Dorsey and Zuckerburg to testify.
They didn’t just censor the New York Post. They censored the House of Representatives. A .GOV website, ran by Congress.
I am not convinced that as a private company, that they don’t have the right to do as they please. Why should they have to be fair in what they allow on their sites?
Other social media exists. People are free to use those if they please. They could even create their own platforms if they please.
I wonder what does prevent the.building of another platform
Should private companies be able to produce wedding cakes only for heterosexual weddings? Should an order of nuns be able to use an insurance that provider that doesn’t cover contraception? Just curious, in light of your question, how you feel about these things. Honest question.
Yes.
Yes.
I think both are stupid, but they should be able to do it. I also thought Washington was incredibly stupid for sticking with the Redskins name, but thought they had the right to do it.
Not much, we are currently using one.
If they start editing content, suppressing content, applying their rules unequally, censoring news outlets, they cease being a ‘content provider’ and cross the line into a ‘publisher’. That removes their protection from lawsuits.
Further, each of these companies are a monopoly in the space in which they operate, they need to be brought up on anti-trust and broken apart.
A bucket of water, a car battery and a set of jumper cables…
Kidding… I don’t advocate for violence and physical harm, but aiding or providing material support for violence that results in property damage, physical harm, or death, should be prosecuted.
Sure, good luck suing them. If they are okay with that risk, then they can do as they please.
They aren’t a monopoly.

They don’t have exclusive possession or control of social media. People choose to use them, they could be on T-Nation / Myspace instead.
