Movie: District-9

Would have liked to know more about how the Prawns came to be in the state they were: ship barely functional, low mental function (most of them), cultural disorganization. Chris and his boy seemed to be the only ones with any sense of what the fuck was going on.
It was mentioned at one point in the movie ( I think by one of the cut aways to the “proffesor” types) that they are like a hive. Most of the ones who survived were simply the worker drones. I think someone mentioned this.

I got to check out the website of the movie prior to really knowing anything about it and was impressed with the depth and detail that went into it. I was expecting something a little different than what I saw but was very impressed and loved it. If you haven’t seen it yet check out the website for it it’s impressive adn intreesting.

Hell even if you have sen it it may give you another perspective on it and give you an idea of whats coming in the sequel.

I saw it Saturday night. I haven’t watched any television over the summer and had never heard of it. I felt like seeing a movie and my friend wanted to see it so I went in cold, with no expectations at all.

It was extraordinarily uncomfortable to watch and I loved it. I liked that the lead character is an idiot and a reluctant hero in the end. Most of humanity barely approach even that level of nobility. I suspect most people would fall closer in character to either the Nigerians or the mercenaries who kill because they can.

I think it was a good look at who we really are; barely a step above savages.
Don’t knock killing prawns until you’ve tried it. Its fun.

For some reason I really like the little kid alien. His relationship with his dad was touching.

See, now that makes more sense and fits nicely into the setting of the movie. But at the same time, I’m a backstory whore, so I want more. But thanks to those who replied.

See, this movie will go down as another “Usual Suspects” for me - everyone else seemed to like it but I can’t figure out why.

It was DECENT but felt unfinished, and I’m not talking about a setup for a second film. The script felt unfinished. I wouldn’t watch it a second time because it didn’t feel amazing, but I didn’t think it was a complete waste of money.

I liked the angle they were taking with the film but I just didn’t like a few things:

SPOILER

 1. Why didn’t they talk more about the mothership? I saw the scene in the trailer that was NOT in the film (I fucking hate that) where a human is talking to someone onboard the ship (supposedly) and I was waiting for that fucking scene the whole time.

 2. It seems like Peter Jackson tried hard to take an unconventional approach to an alien flick, and I’m fine with that, but I felt like there should have been more about District 9 or the 20 years that the aliens had been there. I wanted to see more interaction between aliens and Nigerians in the compound, and even aliens in Johannesberg trying to blend into society.

 3. I felt the connection with Johannesberg (apartheid) was a cheap move. That’s just me, but I know RSGZ is from SA originally so I’d love to hear what he thinks.

That was just a scene put together to get people interested in the movie, but not really give away the story. This usually done with the way trailers are edited. If you rewatch that scene after seeing the movie, you’ll notice the details don’t match. The humans don’t have their ship.

So, apprently the movie was based on a short film called “Alive in joburg” which can be found on youtube, its only 6 mintues long and shot in documentory style, you also get to see why certain things were done in the movie like robbing meat, the mech suit, the gravity gun, and what not… if ya liked the movie you should check it out

Spoiler

I liked the movie, i thought the first 1/3 of the movie was strange, but once the guy started turning into an alien, it started getting really good.

It seemed strange that the aliens ship would just drop it’s control module, but maybe they had their reason…

SPOILER!!!

I think that was done brilliantly. Usually I can tell the entire story from the Trailer( Terminator 4!). I hope more movies implement this plan.

great flick, i liked the documentary style at the beginning and end and by the looks of it there will be a sequal called district 10. None the less it was entertaining and very clever in that it took place in johanesburg in order to draw parallels between the way aliens were treated and the way blacks were treated during the apartheid. A different take on racism and human nature. I give it 10 bench presses.
I agree on the racism angle. The addition of the Nigerians (local mafiosos) that kept the lid on them made for an interesting side plot.

The main character was totally used by his FIL who KNEW things were ultimately going down the shitter. He must have not thought highly of his SIL. The SIL character was meant to be portrayed as weak and expendable as well as anyone else who went into the district. But he rose above all that and did all he could do in a very desperate situation.

Outstanding weaponry prevailed, once they could be activated. Amazing how the Nigerians were the keeper of the majority of the cache.

I give it 5 stars and also agree that District 10 is in the works.

How did you guys feel about the weapons testing scene, when they brought up the prawn with the x on his chest?

Man that was uneasy.

I think a movie has done it’s job when a CG alien freaking out is effectual and spurns that kind of feeling.

FRICK! I want to see it!

I’m broke right now, any boot legs leaked yet? lol I know some of you have connections give em up

That’s because they gave him big, cute, human-like eyes so the audience would empathize with the aliens. Which was a cheap trick. I liked the movie, but I think it would have been braver if they hadn’t given the aliens big human eyes. Would the audience be as sympathetic?

Also, motherfuckers need to start using a tripod. The hand-held thing has been done to death. Ok, it’s like a documentary, I get it…

Thanks John S.

I just finished watching it and I liked it. Left a lot to the imagination when it was over. So sequel must be in effect. I also agree that documentary style is only good for a bit, then gets real old.

I loved the little dude, especially that one part he giggles after using the big ass mech machine thing on the soldiers. Was cute in a brutal way haha…

I agree about the eyes, but it wasn’t only that. It was his behavior, I guess the innocence of a kid, even if an alien kid.

It was one of the creepier scenes of the movie. I noticed a large audience reaction to that scene and many more, I heard more than one “holy shit” and not just from myself.

BG

Was a great movie, though I think I lost some of the connection with certain characters due to watching a poor quality version on the internet. Didn’t want to go to a theater and see it alone though, and no one else wanted to see this with all the other movies out right now. Still thought it was really good though, I’ll def rent it to watch again in full effect when its out on blu-ray.

I intend on seeing it.

I’ve heard lots of good reviews. And a few bad ones.

Can’t please everyone I guess.
