Most Overrated in Music History...

SHUT YOUR MOUTH!

Eric Clapton - Terribly overrated, average player, never wrote a great riff.

Jeff Beck - Another average dabbler. No history-making riffs.

Rolling Stones - A handful of great songs. The rest… a bunch of crap.

REO Speedwagon - Pussy rock posing as cool.

Sublime - Phony white reggae ska crap.

Kings of Leon - (see REO Speedwagon)

The Killers - Not even close to living up to their name.

Jack White - Hack, hack, hack. He managed to sucker a generation of listeners who don’t remember or never experienced the greats of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, and thus think he’s a genius.

Journey - A great singer and a great guitarist do not always equate to a great band.

Queen - (See Journey).

311 - (See Sublime)

Wait… didn’t we already do a thread like this a while ago?

Rihanna is not over rated :frowning:

Kings of Leon is actually pretty good pre sex on fire. They were a legit southern rock group.
Here they are in 2003

Does not compute…

I would say overplayed, more than overrated.

whats your list? here’s mine…

 1. The beatles… these guys take the cake…
They are easily the most overrated.

Lenny Kravitz. Stick to fashion, asshole.
DBCooper wrote:
Allow me to be the first to say it: Rush.
Now, now. You keep practicing those drums, and eventually you’ll be able to play some Rush songs, then you’ll feel a little better

 1. Most Progressive Rock bands. Pretentious and bland music posing as intellectual.
 2. Queen. No one actually likes their albums, right? Just the greatest hits, and even then there are a lot of duds. The few songs of theirs that are good are amazing though, like Don’t Stop Me Now.
 3. The Police
 4. Phil Collins solo career. Shoutouts Iron Dwarf.
 5. Radiohead. I’m a fairly big fan, but the way the music press treats them is ridiculous. They’re aren’t that influential, they aren’t that revolutionary a band, and their songs aren’t THAT good [their lyrics are their weak point, specifically].
 6. The Band. I tried on 3 separate occasions to listen to their stuff in hopes I would get the fuss. I couldn’t.
 7. Tupac. He’s one of the best ever [I think he could be top 10], but there is a large group who just wont tolerate anyone saying he’s not THE best ever. He and Radiohead are examples of good musicians who are still overrated.
 8. Oasis. I am a HUGE fan, especially of their stuff from 94-97. But facts are facts.
 9. The Doors. Greatest hits record has like 5 good songs then the rest are recycle bin status. Also: Jim Morrison’s lyrics.
 10. The backpack rap scene.

Nirvana-If Kurt Cobain wasnt such a pussy and took the easy way out, they’d be average at best.
Rage Against the Machine-Holy Shit,we get it…your angry against society.
311-Kinda annoying. and overplayed.

coldplay

Good call here. I’m not sure how I forgot these guys.

One to two good songs are standard on their albums. The rest is just filler.

I would say they are underrated, if anything. I’m not a big fan, but think they are worthy of the praise they do get.

To me they are the type of band that you either like or you don’t. They have a particular sound that I think appeals to a certain ears.

The Doors are a band that 13 year old males get hooked on when they “discover” classic rock. That’s about the time when my friends and I started listening. I do own a couple albums (non-greatest hits), but couldn’t tell you the last time I dug em up and listened to them.

I think Morrison (as a songwriter) is overrated more so than the band itself. Morrison gets far too much credit. Manzarek and Krieger were both solid musicians and songwriters, but all you ever hear about is Morrison.

When I listen to The Doors (for many of their songs, at least), I feel like I’m supposed to be under the influence of some drug to understand what Morrison is trying to say.

Morrison invinted what it is to be a front man. Musically, the group wasn’t very good. But WTF about the lyrics. Morrison was wrote some of the best lyrics ever. The problem is that he references mythology and poetry and such that is over most people’s heads.

Oh, and I don’t like the beetles or elvis. There I said it.

The reason most of these bands continue is because they started so simple…where else is there to go than up…ex. beatles,u2,greenday?
I have to make a comment about Prince. I play guitar and I didn’t like the image when I was wrapped up in VH stuff and guys that fly. As I matured and looked back and to what he has done the guy is a freakin genius. I don’t always love his style but he is musically inclined.

LZ not a huge fan but like Wayne Campbell said they didn’t write music for the masses. They did something experimental that no one else was doing.

Eric Clapton I have a huge problem with. He didn’t change anything.
Jimi Hendrix changed music
Elvis
Van Halen
Nirvana changed music. Not about liking it is about changing what we once knew.

Robert Plant did as well, quite a bit actually, and he was much easier to understand than Morrison.

The OP may just be one of the most ridiculous & ignorant things I’ve read in a good long time.

I can’t really comment on the Beatles as I’ve never really given them a thorough listen. Liked Abbey Road though

Tupac is overrated & BIggie isn’t? Tupac sampled. & Biggie didn’t? I highly recommend you read the liner notes of any of BIggie LP’s. Let me know how many samples are listed. If you can count that high. Biggie & Eminem would blow him away? You must be one of those people who doesn’t listen to lyrics & just rides the beat. How many political or intellectual songs did Biggie or Eminem ever have?

& Prince; The man writes his own songs, composes & produces his own music & has been making music since '78. Check his discography. Must be over 30 albums, total. He must be doing something right.

If you don’t like or appreciate their music, that’s cool. But you should name your thread appropriately. Given your list, I’m shocked Marley, Hendrix & Zep aren’t on there too!!! Hell! How about Mozart & Beethoven? Throw them in the mix while you’re at it. You probably don’t like classical, so why not?

How can you think Lenny Kravitz is over-rated? lol

How many people actually know who he is? or can name a song of his?

Probably few their 20’s. But for the 30-somethings, you know who he is. And at the very least know that crappy American Woman cover.
