If my ilk had their way, in a few years, you wouldn’t need to worry about gas prices, because we would’ve started aggressively pursuing renewable energy initiatives 20 years ago.

What you claim will happen in decades will happen in less than 1 here in California, because of our statewide Global Warming Law. So rather than prolong what could happen in decades as you claim, will happen much faster.
You cannot push Green energy on people, the tech is not there yet. Not even close. If or when we are able to realistically shift our energy demands from fossil fuels to something else, we can do so at a pace that will not harm the people and economy.
