Missing Days at Firefighter's Academy?

When you were in the Academy going through training what was needed to miss a day or two?

I plan on enrolling in EMT night class next month but it runs through my Sister’s wedding. I’m not sure if the EMT class is Mon/Tues/Thurs/Sat or Mon/Wed/Fri/Sat as some forms on the site say one and some say another so not sure which is up-to-date, but I will definitely miss the Saturday and Friday if applicable.

This should be doable though right? I mean certainly other people miss a class or two and can still graduate?

Ask your instructors, we don’t know their policies.

I remember a few fire guys from my EMT-B course some years back. same kind of layout, 3 evenings per week or so.

While its prob possible to get away with an absence or two – and only your instructors can confirm that – it would really make things tough for you. In that format, and with assessments, demonstrating skills etc. being such a large portion of the class, each and every session ends up mattering and it may not even be possible to reschedule certain activities.

Yeah talk to your instructors. We were “legally” allowed to miss 4 classes if i remember correctly and after that the state says you are not allowed to take the licensing test. I think if thats the case and you tell the instructors its your sisters wedding it shouldnt be a problem.

So is this Fire Academy or EMT-Basic through a private institution?

Way I understand each county in Florida seems to have one designated Academy. The sequence is EMT-B then FF1 then FF2.

In my area there are primarily 3 counties that make up Orlando MSA (metropolitan statistical area): Orange, Seminole, and Osceola. I live in Seminole.

For Seminole County its done at Seminole State College at their Sanford location
For Orange its done at Central Florida Fire Academy at their Orlando location
For Osceola its done at Central Florida Fire Academy at their Kissimmee location

This is the link for the Orange and Osceola county ones (where I am enrolling) http://www.fireacademy.org/

Sanford is the closest to me but I feel more comfortable taking it at the Fire Academy than the community college and the night program is starting next month while I’m not even sure if Seminole County offers it as a night program.

I’m attending the mandatory info session tomorrow and my main question is going to be if this will be a problem or not. Was hoping maybe you all would know to save me from attending the session if it will be a problem.

I would say 100% that it will be a problem. Why not just sign up for a different course start date?

Waiting 5 months for another start date isn’t exactly appealing to me.

And why are you “100%” it will be a problem when unless I’m mistaken you’re not an American Fire Fighter and therefore have no experience to with the question?

Ok let’s clarify here.

Are you getting paid by one of those departments? (I’m guessing not)

When is the wedding (how far along will you be)?

If you are not employed by on of them, is your goal to be hired by one of those departments?

Im movong to florida from seattle soon and am gonna have turn down going to the academy here, can you send a link to the academy down in florida.

I attended the info session today. Asked the EMT program director about it and he said I’ll miss a Skill Day and Test but not a Mandatory Day since those aren’t going to be on Saturdays so I should be okay. They won’t fail me on the one absence.

The program is August 2 until November 5th assuming I get in, have to take a knowledge based test next Tuesday morning and a fitness test the same day in the evening which will be ranked to determine if I get in or wait-listed. I should be alright, I test pretty well and have a B.A. which gives me bonus points. The wedding is on October 10th so I would miss 1 Saturday class (October 9th)

My goal is to get EMT and FireFighter Certification and in the current job climate I’d go anywhere to get my foot in a door and gain experience in a station.

There is more than one Academy and I already posted the one for Orlando (Orange County) in this thread. I don’t know every academy in the state.

Hmm I was thinking about going ahead and becoming a EMT and go to school at the same time (My goal is to become a PA). Is that a realistic situation?

Alright then. I was wrong. Good for you. Get to to your course go to a wedding. Score. Keep us posted on your progress.

Well it sounds like you are paying for this out of pocket, rather than as a condition of employment. With that being said it’s your money to risk!

Well as somebody else just stated it’s your money, and you will get out what you put in.

I can tell you this much is that you shouldn’t miss a day unless somebody died, or you are puking your guts up.

Lanchefan i respect your opinion especially because you PM’ed with me for a while answering a bunch of FF questions i had for you. But i think a family marriage is just as good of a reason to miss a day as a death. A death is the saddest day in your family, as a marriage is supposed to be the happiest. I love my family and can tell you if my sister was getting married i wouldnt miss it regardless of what i had going in.

I didn’t resign for another year with the Peace Corps because of my sister’s wedding.
I turned down a paid job offer in China because of my sister’s wedding.

No way in hell am I missing it. I’ve only got one sister and she in turn only has 1 brother. I’ll be there no matter what and if it means I don’t graduate and have to redo it, such is life, it’ll be that much easier the second time around.

Sorry just stating fact, I get 3 days off for a death. For a wedding I better take vacation or work out shift trades.

And that is why I asked if he was paying for academy or being paid. Trust me it makes a huge difference.
