The part about the story I didn’t like was the idea that releasing him early on the drug sentence had anything to do with the murder. The facts are that longer sentences don’t deter crime after the guy is released any better than shorter ones. He would have most likely killed her as soon as he got out anyway…but there is no way to know that while he’s in the joint on a drug charge.
If a prison term is going to have any effect it will do it in 4 years or less. After 5-7 years it’s not punishment any more, it’s just where they live.
The three stikes thing, if the crimes that count as a strike are carefully chosen, works well because it nails the guys that just won’t change while not filling jail cells at $22k a year and up per inmate unnecessarily.
