I was over in Finland a few years ago seeing family and was having a bit of banter with my Finnish stepmother, mocking her dour, cold country when she turned to me and said “At least we have our own country”

Canadians don’t seem to mind living under U.S. rule.
That, and they burned the White House to the ground.

It’s getting quite outrageous now tbh. I’m losing respect for a lot of people close to me due to their countless posting about this being Scotland’s darkest day and demanding a recount.
Apparently there can be no national recount, only county recounts.

But that’s besides the point: I was surprised by how close it wasn’t in Edinburgh, the Borders, Dumfries, and Aberdeen. Definitely a a case of the Yes side making up in volume what it lacked in number.

Definitely. I was genuinely surprised South Ayrshire (my county) actually had a No majority, albeit a slight one.

I was surprised that this was a simple first passed the post type election. I would have thought that at the very least the Yes camp would have had to garner two thirds of the vote to say they had an overwhelming mandate for change. Or to have won the majority of votes in the majority of counties.

What would have been genuinly funny would have been if Yes had won but No voting counties refused to join in and then succeeded from the succession. Sort of like Northern Ireland.

How many more years before they can force a new vote? Quebec has done it at least twice that I’m aware of.

they won’t, it’s done for a generation now.

There’s been some ugliness since the result came in but it’s mostly just teenage arseholes getting drunk and starting fights. It’ll calm down soon.
