Is Periodization Necessary?

I have been seriously for about 10 months, with about 2.5 months of gaps due to rest/sickness.

I like training with heavy weights, i.e. 80% - 90% 1RM, and low volume. My goal is size and strength, so I’d like to know…

Is it necessary to alternate between high weight/low volume and low weight/high volume for gains?

Periodization is necessary, but there many different types…traditional, conjugate…hybrids. I have no idea what your training looks like, so I can’t comment on that.

If you are progressing nicely without periodizing, you should continue. If you’re not making progress you need to change. POst your program.

It’s most definitely not needed unless you’re training for competition.

I wouldn’t say that. There are times when your recovery takes longer than the time it takes you to lose conditioning. You have to periodize in this situation. In my opinion it’s the defining moment between being a beginner and being an intermediate.
