One thing I read on this thread that made sense to me is the dislike of labels. I say I am a progressive and instantly I get tarred with the brush of welfare-liberalism and admittedly if someone says they are conservative I instantly have a Pavlovian response and assume, until proved otherwise, that you are probably extremely ignorant, deeply and dogmatically religious and want to move back into some gay-free, sex-free, '50’s bible belt utopia that never existed.
So if anyone is still reading this what does it mean to YOU to be Conservative, Progressive, etc… what are your politics in an ideal world?
I want a social safety net for all. I want it to make sure no one starves, no one dies of a tooth ache, no old people in bread lines, no mentally ill walking the street without treatment. I do NOT want it to be welfare in the sense of “I don’t need to get a job…pass me my lucky’s and my 40 of malt liquor”.
I want realistic guidelines for safety, health, the environment, education etc… set by the federal government and than I’d like each state to figure out how to implement plans to fulfill those minimum guidelines.
I’d like the US to get out of policing the world. It isn’t our job. We should take part in NATO/UN peace keeping etc… but we should not invade other nations unless directly attacked. ( I don’t have issue with the US going into Afghanistan, I have issues with attacking Iraq)
Lastly, and most importantly I want a secular government. The people who take part in the government can be whatever religion they wish. I’ve never attacked a religious person, nor would I. The government itself has to be a place where people of all beliefs can come together and work.
I’d especially like to know what MaximusB and the others I exchanged shots with think. I rather exchange ideas and knowledge than sharp words and insults.
