Interviewing Techniques

Here is your first problem, and it continues into the rest of this statement.

If you want this to turn into full time you have to thing of it in that way. You aren’t looking for a job, that is mistake #1. You are looking for a career. Once you think of it this way, many things start to change, and many more questions open up on your end.

What stage is the company in? Growth? Maturity? Decline?
What does the future hold for the company?
What is my path to management, upper management, partner?
What is my role in year 1? Year 3? Year 5?
What are the expectations of a first year staff? Second? Fifth?
What opportunities for more responsibility are available in the department I would be hired in?
How big is the team I will be part of?
What are the company’s policies regarding advancement? From within, or outside hire?

Jobs are things you do while in your position once hired. You are interviewing for a career. Remove the whole “resume builder” thoughts from your mind, because unless you are a good liar, good HR personnel can smell that from a mile away.
You know Im worried that discussing my ability to from intern to full time will possibly take me out of running. Because it looks as though it is primarily just an internship but I’m hoping I can segway it into full time by kicking ass while I’m there.

You don’t have to bring that up, just speak from a perspective that shows you are thinking like an adult and looking at your future long term.

Unless they are just looking for a body, in which case it really isn’t the type of place you want to work, the fact you are thinking in terms beyond 'beer money and loot to score chicks" will play well for you.

So I have a question, i had the phone interview Friday and now I want to to do a follow up email with the guy just thanking him and that I look forward to doing an in person interview. Problem is I don’t have his email, if I were to call the HR person that scheduled the meeting and ask him for the email and just tell him that I wanted to send an email to the interview thanking him. Would that be too soon, pushy?

The person interviewing did ask me what dates I would be available to come in and I told him during the interview. I’m just worried like Cortes said there are probably people with better resumes applying so I really want to do my best to give myself an edge.
A quick phone call to thank them for their time and consideration is usually when they will give you the in person date and time.

No phone call, no date and time. Just a nice “Hi, I’m so and so, from the interview the other day…” will keep the ball rolling in the direction you want it to.

Okay I wanna bump this and just give a rundown of the timeline of events so far and were I am at. And what would be my best next move and when.

Got call from HR dept on 5/15 about setting up phone interview with Manager and Director of that department.

Did phone call with only the Director, manager couldn’t make it. Pretty standard interview(I think new to this, lasted 15minutes). Told me 2 things, that the manager will want to talk to me as well since she wasn’t able to make it. And asked me what dates I was available to come in for a in person interview and i gave him the dates.

That phone interview was Friday(5/17), i sent him(director) a follow up email on Monday(5/20) thanking him and saying that I look forward to conducting an in person interview.

Its Wednesday now, no call from the HR guy about setting up a inperson meeting and the manager hasn’t called me yet to talk.

How much longer should I wait to take the initiative? And who do Icall? The HR guy?(thats the only phone number I have actually) If so what do I ask?

One of my professor’s gave a pretty good tip about expected salary. If the potential employer asks what type of pay you’re expecting for the position you shouldn’t respond with a number. You should respond with “the middle of the range pay for that type of position.” Asking for too little money is just as bad as asking for too much.

This particular professor said the employer told him he was the ideal candidate for the job, but that he didn’t receive the position because he didn’t ask for enough money.

They aren’t going to call you. You should have already made the call to HR. Like Monday. Don’t wait at all to take the initiative. Call them tomorrow shortly after the start of business- 8:30-9:00.

Okay, what exactly should i ask the HR guy?

Tell him who you are and why you are calling as a follow up thank you call. Use the lose end of interviewing with the manager to segue into the in person interview.

Sorry, but I can’t tell you exactly what to say. That is where the people skills and information from your previous conversation come into play .
It doesn’t have to be a long conversation. Succinct and resulting in the in person date and time is ideal.

I called the HR guy on Thursday 5/24 at 1:30pm his time(2hrs ahead of CA), and Just said

Hey blabla, Im Optheta and I am applying for the Data analyst position. I talked with the director as per the schedule and everything went great and he mentioned that you’d be giving me a call to come in and conduct a inperson interview, and I just wanted to checkin and make sure I haven’t missed a call from you or anything as I have been pretty busy with finals. So if you can give me a call back when you have a chance that would be great. I look forward to talking with you, take HR person.

Edit: for got to mention he didn’t answer, when I called that was a voicemail I left. And as of today I haven’t heard back from him yet.

As of today the position is still open on their site, and summer essentially has started. It seems like there is not much push/care or whatever on the companies part to fill it. So I figure if I don’t here a phone call back by next Tuesday-Wednesday(?) I should follow up again but I’m not really sure what I would I say this time.
