Interview Dress Code

Being overdressed for an interview? WTF?

Also, don’t listen to Totekopf… He’s barely weened off his mother’s teet

j/k

I wouldn’t want to work at a place that refused to hire me for being overdressed anyway. It sounds like the hiring manager there is simply looking for a way to deny applicants.

How about you get ready as if you were going to the interview then take a pic and post it… then we could give you a yes or no

Dress one level above the job you’re after.

Button up long sleeve and tie. Slacks and shoes. If you don’t own a suit get those things and maybe a dark brown or blue blazer.,but the shirt and tie is always what you should wear at the very least.

And make sure the sox are as dark if not darker than your pants. Most guys don’t know that light sox and dark pants is a big no-no. I know this because a gay guy told me once.

Who am I celtics?

I’d say don’t wear a suit. It’s an IT position at HIS SCHOOL. I have never heard of anyone wearing a suit for an on campus job. I guess a suit still wouldn’t hurt, but i wouldn’t wear one

I would add to this that the fit of the suit/blazer is more important than the make/material. A well-tailored generic from Men’s Warehouse beats a boxy ill-fitting tablecloth from Armani.

ya really. “Low level IT job at a college” means sitting in a computer lab putting paper in the printers and helping dipshits who cant figure out how to turn the monitor on.

WAA this thread is disappointing I was hoping people would say Polo is fine for a low level Entry Job. Guess Ill get shirt tomorrow pewp.

Also are black shoes not good for job interviews? Totekopf is saying he doesn’t were them for it cause there for funerals.
Jesus fucking Christ. Are you going to take your laptop in there and come on here and ask how to answer each question?

“How are you today?”
“errr one moment please…tap tap tap… er stick it in her pooper?”
“Well thanks for coming. Sharp suit. Too sharp. I would have given you the job if you had worn black shoes.”
“But but Totenfuckingwhatshisface said…”
“Get out.”

My advice. Grow some balls and use your initiative.

Can I wear a polo? What colour shoes am I allowed? What should I have for breakfast beforehand? FFS.

Dress for the position above the person interviewing you.

You’ll never go wrong.

Walk in wearing kakis, flip flops, and a polo shirt and you’re telling me you’re not taking it seriously and to hire you would be a waste of my time. You’re telling me that my time is better suited interviewing someone else.

Make sure your shoes match your belt (not sure who said that in the first page, but they’re bang on)…

No one will ever be angry that you overdressed for an interview, but they will definitely let you know if you do. I’ve been told at the end of 2 seperate interviews that I’ve overdressed.

The first was a sales job, I wore a 3 piece suit and a $800 knee length pea coat. The second was for a bean counter position at a biotech. I wore a suit, and they said that they almost didn’t hire me because I wore a suit and it clashed with the whole “biotech culture”.

But still got offers for both, and accepted the biotech job.
I HAVE to know then, wtf is the “biotech culture”?

Biotech Culture (at least at the place I worked):

Smell unwashed, wear wrinkled bowling shirts, wear sandles, shorts above the knee for both males and females, be cocky as fuck, be unable to read or follow simple directions, have absolutely ZERO common sense, be a genius in the lab and cure diseases by accident.

Management level employees care only about the stock options, profitability of the company, better opportunities down the street, or being bought out so they can unload all their stock and start over somewhere else so they can do the same there.

I’ve been through multiple interviews and I’ve gotten 2 internships and my current job… i’ve always wore a suit (black suit, black shoes, light blue shirt, and a black tie)…

at worst i’d do black dress pants, light blue colored shirt, and a black tie… (or white shirt and striped tie)… no jacket

if its hot etc then they will prolli understand if ure not rocking the jacket but no matter what the job i’d at least wear dress pants, button down shirt and tie…

and yes make sure ure belt and shoes match…

Some people say that the black suit is funeral-ish… if u feel that way too get a dark grey suit or a darker navy suit… this isn’t prom, don’t come in rocking a white tuxedo… i’ve never gotten any comments about the black suit…

Why does that matter? I’m an IT manager at a college and I’ve interviewed former students. If it’s a full time job, I expect the applicant to take it as serious as if they were applying anywhere else. Wearing a polo with khakis shows me that you either don’t care enough or were too clueless to do a little research and figure what you should be wearing.

And what the hell is wrong with wearing black shoes to an interview? That’s got to be one of the craziest things I’ve read yet.

Edit: I’m assuming he’s applying for a full time job and not as a part time student aid working in a computer lab.

Suit up! It’ll be epic.

Im losing faith in T-Nation, this is what you wear for a job interview.

You’re retarded.

Black, or Blue suit.

And, I’d wear a suit to a construction job interview. If people have a problem with it, I’ll just say I rolled from Mass, what are they going to say about that? Now they are just obligated to give me the job or I’ll sue them like Jews would have sued Hitler if he hadn’t pussied out and killed himself (I think that’s the real reason why he killed himself, didn’t want to have to go to civil court).

Don’t listen to him, he’s Asian…he wears gray suits, slim ties, and converses or white patent leather shoes. Let’s just saw that people don’t hire him for his fashionable business attire.

 • Black, Blue, or Dark Gray Suit (get your jacket and pants at the same time as you’ll need them to be the came material and color)
 • White Shirt
 • Neutral color tie (you can get fancy once you get into your career)
 • Black belt with a black suit, black or brown belt with blue suit, black belt with gray suit.
 • If you get suspenders (which I suggest if you’re a big guy, not in the idea that you’re fat, but that you have some LBM) don’t wear pants that have belt loops or wear a belt.
 • Match your shoes with your belt, get dress shoes with a heel and laces, not gay ass loafers.
 • Wear an undershirt so you can’t see your pasty white skin through your shirt. Read I said undershirt not a wife beater, nothing says jackass like seeing your shirt lines.
 • Wear a watch and one ring (ring optional) so you’re not pulling your phone out looking at the time and leave your damn phone in the car or at home during the interview or turn it off.
