People like HeadHunter just don’t get it. Would you tell someone who just lost a limb in a motorcycle wreck they should have driven a car? Would you tell someone whose child has just died not to worry they still have 2 other kids? No.
Unless you have been through a huge catastrophy like this, you can’t truly understand it.
3 years after Katrina and Rita and now 2 back to back Hurricanes and you have your “Sunday Armchair Hurricane Quarterbacks” who instead of trying to lift their fellow countrymen up by being supportive, they want to kick them while they’re down. Sure you can live anywhere, but there is only one place you can call home.[/quote]
Scientists have stated that it is a very real possibility that the eruption of a volcano about a thousand years from now will erase the entire eastern seaboard.
Maybe everyone from New York to Florida should move.
Cali is on a huge fault line that may destroy it by the time our great grandkids are fucking shit up. Maybe the entire West Coast should evacuate.
Kansas?
Tornadoes
I know, let’s all move to Canada!
Anyone dumb enough to blame natural disasters on the people who live near them when they occur needs to wear a helmet before they hurt themselves.
Until you have lost much of what you own to something completely out of your control (like I did with the hurricane that hit Florida a few years back…my apartment was…obliterated), you don’t have a clue what that feels like.
I didn’t do anything to bring that hurricane back then but serve in the military near the coast line.
The people in Galveston didn’t do anything to bring this hurricane but live near water.
This species won’t last long at all if the actual sentiment is that we blame people caught in hurricanes for being at risk to begin with.
Do you like gasoline? We’ll incase you missed something Houston is the oil and gas hub of the industry in the US.
We refine all the gas that YOU use.
Do you like heat during the cold Ohio winter? That oil is refine HERE too bub!
But don’t worry, all our friends that work in this industry have been back to work all week. We will keep you ass warm and get you where you need to go.
Ever heard of the Houston Ship Channel? Maybe not it is only 1 of the top 2 biggest port in the US.
Don’t worry about us, we are going to be fine! We may have over a million still without power as far as 100 miles from the coast but we will survive and still be the state that you probably love to hate.
We definetly don’t need shit from you in the form of handouts or sympathy.
Come down here and we can give you all your money you GAVE back…Have a good day!
And for those who want to read about how it can go from bad to worse, here is a book about what we went through in Katrina.
I was working at the jail the Doc ended up at, and even though he doesn’t mention me by name, he talks about stuff I was in on and talks about a corrections officer who needed stitches and that was me.
mahwah, thanks for posting those pictures. All I’ve seen on the news are 30 second briefs that obviously don’t come close to showing the entire story.
I hope all you Texans come through this without too many scars.
PX mentioned maybe ya’ll should move to Canada. It’s damn cold here and we get ice storms and flooding on the east coast, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis on the west coast and tornados on the prairies.
There is risk of natural disaster everywhere.
Just got power back about an hour ago… three days ahead of when they said we’d have it so I cannot complain a damn bit.
Just got through going through this whole thread. and I’m grateful to have no household damage at all, although many trees around here were obliterated. Others certainly, including many people I know were not so fortunate.
I’m blessed that my biggest complaint is 5 days without T-Nation!
Glad you’re OK. Most of my friends and family in Louisiana and Texas have their electricity back and little damage to their houses. I still haven’t heard from eveyone but I am keeping high hopes.
“I don’t like it one bit,” said Phillip Curtis, 58, a Dallas contractor who owns two homes ?? a $350,000 vacation home and a $200,000 rental ?? on Galveston Island’s Jamaica Beach. “I think the state should allow us to try to save the houses. I don’t appreciate the state telling people, `Now it belongs to us.’ It breaks your heart.”
The former state senator who wrote the law had little sympathy.
“We’re talking about damn fools that have built houses on the edge of the sea for as long as man could remember and against every advice anyone has given,” A.R. “Babe” Schwartz said.
Finally…somebody with some fucking brains down there.
But then, it makes me sad that I can’t send my tax dollars to Phillip Curtis to rebuild his vacation home and rental properties.
Message: if you choose to live/own someplace, YOU (not others) bear the responsibility of your choice. Forcing others to pay for your choice is an abomination against God and Man.
I fly with the Air Force Reserve 53d Weather Reconnaissance Squadron “Hurricane Hunters” out of Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, MS. I’ve been flying into Tropcal Storms and Hurricanes for 12 years now and can only offer one real bit of advice. If you’re in the path of an oncoming storm, no matter how small it seems, PLEASE evacuate.
Hurricanes are very unpredictable and can strengthen considerably in a VERY short period of time. I know that 19 times out of 20 much ado is made about an incoming storm and then nothing much comes of it. But it’s been my experience that no sooner does everyone get used to storms not doing much than an Ike or Katrina comes along.
We’ve all seen the destruction those storms wrought but also think about people swimming for their lives with boards and other foreign objects flying along at 80+ mph; people who’re swimming with water moccasins and alligatorsthat also are trying to reach the same solid ground.
My heart goes out to the Galveston/Houston area residents. I was two years rebuilding after Katrina, I know full well what lies ahead and truly feel for you.
A lot of people don’t understand that as long as there are seaports, refineries, fisheries, and other industries dependent on Ocean Traffic there will be people living in Coastal areas. Be it tornados inland, earthquakes, Hurricanes, forest fires, there will always be the threat of a natural disaster. If someone feels the need to denigrate people over their choosing to live where their livelihoods are then that’s pretty shortsighted and inconsiderate. We Coastal Residents are fully aware of Hurricanes and the risks they pose. We prepare as best we can and most of us evacuate when asked/told to.
Once again, PLEASE take Ike/Katrina/Rita as a lesson in what a Hurricane can do and evacuate when a storm is coming. If it doesn’t do anything then you can laugh about it but if it does “spin up” and hit hard you’ll have avoided a potential tragedy.

Brilliant man. Clearly, the Tsunami that hit Asia was a message that…people shouldn’t live in Asia?

So if I’m understanding this “great” man’s logic correctly, we shouldn’t live on islands or coastlines? So I guess we shouldn’t have ships or ports either…or offshore rigs…these things don’t operate themselves.
Hell,we shouldn’t have airplanes either since they crash: “God’s message was man wasn’t meant to be in no damned air.”

A couple of trains crashed head-on in California a few days ago (completely overshadowed by Ike around these parts) but I guess we should get rid of those, too.

So I guess we need to evac Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Jamaica,England,…

Maybe even Australia. I mean, it is on the small side for a “continent”.

Worst part of it was that one of the train operators was sending text messages before the trains collided. He was so busy texting, he failed to notice the warning of another train coming. Those must have been some pricey texts, they cost the lives of 15 people, with over 100 injured.

We might as well throw in the state of Alaska for the melting polar icecaps…
