im in the home security industry and you would be really surprised how many people leave stuff out in the open or even unlocked doors and windows.

some stats i use from the fbi

60% of robbers will pass over a house just for it having a security system sign and stickers.
80% of those break ins happen thru the doors.

now a days security systems are super cheap and some you can even monitor from any internet source.

Best way is to buy on foreclosure, say for $150,000, make cosmetic improvements, hardwood floors, granite countertops, stainless appliances, and sell for $450,000. Bonus points if you sell to the original owner.
