I Went to See the Movie 'Drive'

Hey Roy,

did you ever see the movie Its Kind of a Funny Story?
No. I just looked it up on IMDb and it seems like my sort of movie (seems like the same type of film as Choke, which I enjoyed). What did you think of if it?

Yeah I can see that. Although I never see a movie just based on a trailer. Trailers can be really deceiving. I read up on it first.
Well, I agree with Stu about what he said earlier about a knowledge and appreciation of the construction of film making or breaking your enjoyment of this. That’s why it’s so hard to market. Most of the criticisms of Drive are based on it being too slow. That’s only true in that people expect wall-to-wall action when it may work against the movie - we are used to a template where movies substitute story for spectacle.

Drive rejects the formula and I’m glad, because I’m sick of the same old crap being regurgitated to make a quick buck; Drive has what a lot of modern movies are lacking: it has imagination.

Gosling is actually a huge movie buff (he chose NWR over more commercial directors for starters)…

This clip would be considered a boring scene by most:

but the soundtrack and cinematography reminded me of scenes in a few of Michael Mann’s '80s movies and the movie obviously pays homage to character action movies like Bullitt…maybe it’s too knowing and retro for its own good, but there is always something going on.

Gosling said in an interview that he would retire when he starts a family, so I don’t think he has any immediate plans to drop out of the industry…

He hand-picked Nicholas Winding Refn to direct Drive and they are teaming up again on a remake of Logan’s Run.

I really like Gosling. He, Ben Foster and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are probably the three best actors under 30 working in movies today…
They’re all 30 years old.
Where did the time go? They are three of the best actors working today period. Happy?
No, but it has nothing to do with this thread.

Now that you mentioned Michael Mann, this movie also sort of is in same category for me as ‘Heat’, where you could argue that ‘not much happens’ for periods of time e.g. Robert DeNiro helpfully defining ‘luminescent’. I like books, where small details contribute subtly to characterisation, and films are so economical with time and space that they become relentless, and we become spoiled. Although I can see how someone wouldn’t appreciate the movie. My GF didn’t like it at all, got bored

If you insist on playing pedant (again), I rate Gosling, Gordon-Levitt, and Foster as more or less equal on the talent scale. I like films,; I like talking about them with other people who like films… That has plenty to do with this thread. They’ve also accomplished more than many older and more experienced actors and have chalked up more memorable roles before they hit 30 (hence the above comment). Have you even seen the movie? If you had I doubt you’d be talking about the relevance of my post in this thread.

This movie was awesome. Definitely a little weird and different, but awesome.

Really liked it. Ryan’s character reminded me of the killer from Fargo in this one for some reason also.

I was very surprised so was the wife. I really enjoyed it, of course I worked many years in the ER and dealt a ton with mental health. Plus I have a ton of teenagers, so I could relate to an extent.

As far as the movie and how it was made etc, very well done.

Roy if I wait and watch it at the house, will it take away from the film?

My wife like I have said before just does not like movies as much as I do, and I know she will not like this one either.

What an idiot. You want to see driving? Don’t watch a NARRATIVE-BASED movie. Watch Grand prix or something. Or watch Fast and the Furious AGAIN

Oh and i’m qualified to say (askhenazi heritage)- that movie was not anti-semitic. What’s her complaint?

SPOILER******************************************

Only possible thing I could think of is Nino being thuggish or whatever, but he got killed, the moral is: the bad guy loses…

SPOILER END ************************************

If that’s anti-semitic, Godfather 1-3 is far far worse than Jersey Shore for people of Italian heritage.

just saw it… I may need to watch it again to get a full opinion on it since I was having sync problems. Anyways, my overall feeling was that it was just OK. I expected to really like it because of my normal taste in movies, but like that one dude said, if I saw this in theaters, I would have been giggling a little bit at the long drawn-out pauses between the characters, the awkwardness of some scenes, etc. IMO, it wasn’t the lack of dialogue that sometimes made the driver lack a personality, it was everything on the whole.

edit: however I will say that the opening scene got me really amped up/excited for the movie.

who said that, I certainly didn’t say it. you might assume that, though, shame on you!

Im seeing it this Thursday so hopefully it lives up to the hype. My pandora has been suggesting songs from the soundtrack so atleast I know that aspect of the movie will be good. Heres one that im absolutely addicted to:

I already recommended it in another forum, so I figured I’d chime in here while it’s slow at work.

Just went to see it a second time this Saturday, this time with 2 friends. There were a few choices of movies to see and one of my friends seemed more interested in seeing this one, told him I really didn’t mind seeing it again as it was one of the best films I’ve seen (in theatres) recently.

I’d be really interested in reading the book it’s based on. I read that the decision to limit the amount of dialogue that The Driver has was the director’s. So I’m curious to see if in the book his character has more of a backstory, or is more explained, etc.

As it stands in the movie, it’s hard to pin him down, which I like, but at the same time it makes it hard to like/appreciate the character more. He seems to have a strong moral code but is amoral and a criminal at the same time. Love the interrogation scene in the motel room. And the looks exchanged between him and Carey Mulligan at the end of The Elevator Scene.

I found the soundtrack to be really amazing. I don’t know how they managed to make 80’s synthpop-style songs so damn good (and consistently so throughout the film) but they did. I’ve been listening to the soundtrack for a few days now.

I’ve loved evreything else that director Nicholas Winding Refn has made so far, And can’t wait to see what he does next.
