And this wasn’t on the news?

Guess you haven’t been keeping up with current events.
thunderbolt23 wrote:
I wasn’t suggesting you were wrong - just that I thought you needed to explain more.

You started the thread, I just asked a clarifying question. No need for the hissy fit, professor.
True. And I’m sorry for snapping at you, since you didn’t deserve that. I read too much into your question…

I believe knewsom covered a lot of terrain about the two candidates, but honestly, you’d really need to see and hear them both to understand my point of view; what politicians say, write or what is in their public record can be a whole marketing ploy. In order to know what is REALLY in the mind, and have a pretty good idea of how they are going to behave once in office, you have to try and pick on every expression, every inflection, and try to find out from people that actually know them how they are like in real life. So unfortunately I can’t really give you a better answer than I did.

I really don’t expect to change your mind with the above – it is far from a rational, scientific explanation – but fortunately the people who can vote for this election will be able to see and hear them – preferably live, and see what I’m talking about.
thunderbolt23 wrote:
I realize you prefer an echo chamber, but some of us out yonder in the real world might a) disagree with you, or b) ask more questions on what you really think. I offered the latter - no more, no less. Most oberservers here are going to be non-Californians - you should have been expecting a few questions.
Again, I’m sorry I snapped at you. I just extrapolated on the attitude of other responses and misread you.

Yes, I was expecting questions. I was trying to prod and ignite a discussion, and, honestly, except for you and knewsom, it went immediately down the toilet – which speaks volumes.
thunderbolt23 wrote:
Well, who knows - perhaps out of conscience. Maybe he thinks he can really win. From the brief bits I read, Westly considers himself an anti-establishment candidate for his party, and anti-establishment guys tend not to wear the bridle too well from the party mandarins, as he considers them to be part of the problem he wants to fix.
I know that’s what he’s selling. And I bought it for a while, I really did. But after digging a little deeper into his Stanford record and seeing him in action… I quickly changed my mind. It’s just a front.
thunderbolt23 wrote:
Sounds to me that you are upset that he won’t bow out and you fear he will split the vote.
Of course I am and I do. Can you blame me?
rainjack wrote:
Are you referring to Kennedy (the drunken murderer), or Rockefeller (never had a fucking job)?
Did you ever see me defend them? Why do you keep bringing them up? Are they up for some election somewhere I am to vote on?
rainjack wrote:
You voted for the most Euoropean bastard in the election. Don’t hide you blatant eurocentricity - embrace it.
“most European bastard”? Wow, I didn’t know you were so pissed off at him… What did he do to you? I’m curious (and don’t take this as a backhanded question – I HONESTLY am curious to know why you seem to dislike Arnold so much these days)?

Doogs:

My first initial is “K”. Hence, “KNewsom”.

now where were we. Ah yes, the candidates.

A 9% win is a HUGE margin compared to sixty votes.

Most people in Cali are THRILLED that Feinstein and Clinton were elected in 92.

Angelo Tsakopoulous is a close freind of Phil’s - of COURSE he’s going to donate money. And as for your insinuation that Phil is some sort of corrup developer, every single time there has been a remote possibility of a conflict of interest during his term as Treasurer, he has vacated the room. EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Phil has REPEATEDLY beaten Arnold in the polls. Westly has too, but more often than not by smaller margins than Phil. Your assertion that he’s going to “kick the crap” out of either of them is entirely off base. The people of California are PISSED at Arnold - he’s not exacly an ideal governor, of haven’t you been keeping up with current events?

Also, when Arnold was elected, Westly was outspoken in his support for him, and the IMMENSE DEFECIT he wanted to and did ring up. Phil, however, was ardently opposed to the defecit spending of the current administration.

I’m sorry but have you SEEN Phil’s endorsement list? Sure Westly’s looks kinda impressive, that is, until you hold it up next to Phils, which includes MOST of California’s firefighters, police officers, teachers, and labor unions. Since you probably haven’t seen it, here it is:

They share your disdain of the private sector. While the office of Governor of Cali is a state race it is played out on the national stage. Maybe I am connecting the wrong dots - but they wear the same colors you do.

“most European bastard”? Wow, I didn’t know you were so pissed off at him… What did he do to you? I’m curious (and don’t take this as a backhanded question – I HONESTLY am curious to know why you seem to dislike Arnold so much these days)?
You mis understood what I was trying to say. You are uber-eurocentric. Arnold was the most Euro-candidate running, you voted Euro.

Nothing against Arnie. Replace "bastard with “candidate”, and that still conveys what I was saying.

rainjack,

I haven’t been following the thread closely at all, so please don’t read anything more into this question, and don’t take it as rhetoric used to insult you. Are you saying that because someone voted for Arnold, they are eurocentric, and furthermore voted for him BECAUSE s/he wanted a European governor?

I’m sorry but have you SEEN Phil’s endorsement list? Sure Westly’s looks kinda impressive, that is, until you hold it up next to Phils, which includes MOST of California’s firefighters, police officers, teachers, and labor unions. Since you probably haven’t seen it, here it is:
90% of that list is just Democrats or Democratic organizations that are just toeing the party line. A lot of the list is just random individuals–city council or school board members. Not that impressive.

It did include noted criminal and adulterer Henry Cisneros, recipient of one of Clinton’s last minute pardons.

Gary Hart (aka Gary Hartpence), another noted adulterer and political genius supports Angelides–“Follow me around. I don’t care. I’m serious. If anybody wants to put a tail on me, go ahead. They’ll be very bored.”

It included endorsements from about 50 lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered organizations or officials. That’s real mainstream.

Minstrel show star Ted Danson supports Angelides. Does he show up at rallies in blackface?

Brilliant political genius Ed Begley, Jr. supports Angelides.

Wow.

Angelides sounds like a real stand-up guy.

From the LA Times (read the whole thing):

The state treasurer and would-be governor has used his post to help friends and seek election cash – moves at odds with his activist image.

Two distinct pictures of Phil Angelides, a Democrat running for governor, emerge from his record as state treasurer.

There is the Angelides who campaigned in Santa Barbara for coastal protection ? and the one who took $143,200 in campaign checks from developers who, over Sierra Club objections, bulldozed the Dana Point Headlands to build 118 oceanfront houses.

There is the Angelides who crusaded for higher ethical standards in corporate boardrooms ? and the one who said it was none of his business that a securities firm had hired friends as consultants to grease its way into state bond deals, a practice now banned by regulators.

There is the Angelides who mocked Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for treating the state like an “all-you-can-eat special-interest buffet” ? and the one whose campaign accepted $574,000 from law firms he hired to be state bond counsel.

Angelides took steps to hide rocky bank investment

http://www.shns.com/shns/g_index2.cfm?action=detail&pk=ANGELIDES-INVEST-04-10-06

As he geared up to run for state treasurer in 1994, Phil Angelides, a Democratic candidate for governor, sold his interest in a troubled San Jose, Calif., bank for $1.

Angelides’ unloading of his share, for which he initially paid $45,000, avoided the need to disclose one of the less successful of the candidate’s many business ventures at a time when he was touting his private sector experience in his first run for statewide office.

Nothing about the transaction was illegal. But if he had sold his interest for $250 or more, he would have been required to report the income on the conflict-of-interest forms that all candidates must complete.
rainjack wrote:
Maybe I am connecting the wrong dots - but they wear the same colors you do.
Just because they claim they share some opinions that they might have in common with me, you assume that I either have any sympathy for them, or, worse, that I am guilty by association?

That is an extremely bigoted position you have there. You must realize that, right?

I have publicaly attacked several Democracts on these boards, besides Steve Westly. Remember, Steve Westly IS a democrat, one that claims to hold many positions that are also similar to my own, including his claim that he is a staunch environmentalist.

I just can’t believe you are attacking me for hating a guy that represents every thing you hate too – including over-the-top environmentalism. It’s just amazing, truly. Or is it just a pretext to attack me personally, and Steve is just the nearest excuse?
rainjack wrote:

That is insane. I mean, you really think I’d vote for a guy just based on the fact that he happens to be born in Austria, which happens to be in Europe?

So how do you explain my support for Angelides? The fact that he is of Greek descent?

EVERY SINGLE TIME.

DNC Donor Allegedly Gets Special Treatment in Wetlands Dispute, Los Angeles Times Reports

The federal government has two sets of rules relating to wetlands: One for donors to the Democratic National Committee and another one for everyone else. At least that appears to be the conclusion of an April 16 story in the Los Angeles Times that escaped the attention of most of the national media. According to the Times, Sacramento developer Angelo K. Tsakopoulos, a major contributor of the Democratic National Committee and one-time guest in the White House Lincoln bedroom, managed to get “a series of accommodations from three federal agencies” to resolve a wetlands dispute. The dispute revolved around 800 acres of wetlands that Tsakopoulos wanted to convert to a vineyard. Despite federal warnings, Tsakopoulos went ahead and “deep-ripped” (a process in which soil is broken-up as deep as ten feet) the acreage without obtaining the necessary permit. Such action could have resulted in major fines and even criminal penalties. But Tsakopoulos has friends in high places, including John Garamendi, a top Interior Department official, who reportedly weighed-in for Tsakopoulos with federal agencies. Regulators then offered Tsakopoulos what a Fish and Wildlife Service memo termed a “highly favorable” bargain. “Tsakopoulos would set aside about 50 acres of wetlands scattered among 1,400 acres of highlands. And the Fish and Wildlife agency would waive its requirement that the developer fix or create twice the number of vernal pools destroyed,” noted the Times. “The following month, Tsakopoulos donated $100,000 to the DNC (He gave an additional $65,000 the day after the November election).” But Tsakopoulos may get even more out of the deal. In President Clinton’s FY 1998 budget, $1.4 million was budgeted to acquire 400 additional acres for the Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge near Sacramento, California. And who turns out to be the largest land owner in the area? None other than Angelo Tsakopoulos.

and

http://www.sfweekly.com/issues/1999-08-25/news/feature_6.html

Obtaining entitlements for land that has been considered undevelopable involves many activities. For Angelo Tsakopoulos, one of those activities appears to be the making of large campaign contributions…

…Between 1988 and 1991, as entitlements were being finalized and North Laguna Creek was being built out, Angelides contributed over $30,000 to Willie Brown’s various campaign committees. Tsakopoulos gave Angelides almost $1 million for his two runs for state treasurer in 1994 and 1998.

According to California’s Fair Political Practices Commission, Tsakopoulos’ largess has even leaked into the private pockets of government officials. In the late 1980s, Sacramento County Supervisor William Bryan went to prison after he failed to disclose $250,000 in loans from Angelo Tsakopoulos. The FPPC alleged that the loans were made to Bryan in return for his votes to favorably rezone Tsakopoulos’ and Angelides’ holdings slightly west of North Laguna Creek. Tsakopoulos was not charged in the matter.

and

http://www.electmarie.freeservers.com/articles/willie.html

Those thousands of acres were controlled by Democratic Party heavyweight Angelo Tsakopoulos, then-employer of state Democratic Chairman Phil Angelides, future overnight guest of President Clinton, campaign contributor extraordinaire, the controversial and all but undisputed King of the Sacramento Sprawl.

The U.S. Supreme Court announced Monday that it was deadlocked 4-4 on a wetlands case involving developer Angelo Tsakopoulos, and thus affirmed a lower-court ruling fining him $500,000 for plowing two acres of wetlands in a south Sacramento County vineyard.

http://www.independent.com/news/2006/03/conflicts_of_interest.html

Conflicts of Interest

What You Should Know About Gubernatorial Candidate Phil Angelides

…To serve the expansion of his inland real estate empire, Tsakopoulos created Phil Angelides. He hired him fresh out of Harvard University, made him wealthy, and smoothed his way into high public office where he could, presumably, look after their shared interests. State Treasurer Angelides?s 2005 Statement of Economic Interest shows that he receives two separate sources of income ? each worth ?over $100,000? a year ? from Tsakopoulos. He is a limited partner with Tsakopoulos in several ventures, including Placer 2780 Limited Partnership, a controversial project that is trying to get government permission to develop 3,000 acres of farmland near Sacramento. Angelides is substantially invested in real estate projects run by River West, the company he sold to an associate when he became state treasurer. He participates in River West?s Canyon Creek, Mesquite Village, and Gateway West developments.

Last year, Tsakopoulos donated $779,000 to fund the political activities of Tracy Hills Citizen Planning Association, an astroturf citizen group he designed to promote the development of a 6,000-acre Tsakopoulos/River West industrial development project in the Sacramento River Delta.

The list of real and/or potential conflicts of interest goes on. But the point is that Angelides has not successfully separated his official self from the business interests of his mentor, nor from his own financial interests. The profitability of his gargantuan real estate portfolio is contingent upon the granting of multiple governmental favors by scores of officials who are politically beholden to Angelides and Tsakopoulos. His financial holdings can easily be affected by his actions as a member of a score of state finance authorities that oversee billions of dollars in transportation, housing, and infrastructure development projects. The treasurer influences government lending and taxation policies that affect all real estate developers. He also sits on the board of CalPERs, the state pension system that invests heavily in Sacramento-area real estate and has huge leverage in the market.

ANGELIDES: POSTER CHILD FOR CORRUPTING OUR CAMPAIGN FINANCE LAWS?
Posted April 25 2006

If I were a Progressive Democrat, I would be very angry at Phil Angelides. Progressives had a real shot at taking control of the Democrat Party and putting one of their own in the corner office of the Capitol. Angelides had money, connections, a rich partner/mentor and support of the most liberal portions of the Democrat Party. He even had his own money he could put into the campaign, lots of it.

Then as he found himself in almost free fall, he tried to become the Democrat version (in their language, not mine) of Tom DeLay--anything for a victory. The COMMON WISDOM of the media and the GOP is that Phil Angelides would be easier for Governor Schwarzenegger to beat than Steve Westly...and it is true. The way Angelides is financing his campaign, with a straight face, is a good part of the reason Progressives are switching horses to Westly and why the Angelides double standard would be a major issue in the General Election, should he win the Democrat nomination.
knewsom wrote:
…- one thing you forgot to mention was that Phil was CHAIRMAN of the California Democratic Party for some time, including 1992, where he helped mobilize over a MILLION NEW VOTERS to get Feinstein and Bill Clinton elected. …
I don’t know anything about either of them but this bothers me.

Party Chairman is such a slimy position.

All things equal I would rather have someone come from outside the corrupt political system.
knewsom wrote:

Phil on the other hand is funded by over 26,000 contributors to his campaign, and over 50% of his contributions have come from donations of $50 or less - he’s a real grassroots supported candidate.
