Governor Cuomo relied on idiocy and now is expecting the federal government to bail out NYS due to his mismanagement. I’d expect nothing less from that jackass.
The fact that stands out to me is how all the gov’ts jumped to respond to the “projections” (i.e. guess) of someone who had proven that his model was inaccurate under similar circumstances.
You continue to pick apart the person’s opinions, while choosing to ignore the objective facts and numbers that are presented.
I’ll be petty too, now, and pointedly ask where are all the “second wavers” now?
You’re rational, I believe you believe that. They were definitely out there. No idea about now, because I refuse to read the “opinion” pieces.
NY could stop paying money to the fed and call it even.
Russia is under lockdown. Putin at first tried the approach similar to the one advocated by the quacks at AIER.
Ignore the virus, treat list them all as pneumonia cases, throw a few doctors out of windows, and ridicule on state media “fearmongering liberals with an agenda”.
It didn’t work. They have over 10k new cases daily and had to institute a strick lockdown. That’s a country historically completely unconcerned about the human cost of anything, and the KGB goons running it most certainly weren’t influenced by a model from a British scientist.
What? 2,2 million dead under the low probability worst case scenario? The US is on track for 100k deaths before the end of May with unprecedented measures undertaken.
So the 2,2 million represents what is actually written in the report - a low probability worst case scenario on the assumption that nothing would be done to stem the outbreak.
It’s a different proposition whether Ferguson tried to oversell this low probability worst case scenario, but it doesn’t change the facts from the report.
If you’re read the article, you’ll notice that the author isn’t attacking the modeling results per se, but interpretation of said results by Ferguson in his media appearances.
This might sound cynical or ignorant, but I just saw a go-fund-me for a local bar supposedly due to the shut down.
Accompanying it was a story about all of these nice things, some of them probably true. Here’s the cynicism though: If the people that own this place haven’t made a tidy little fortune in the past 15 years, or at least enough to tide them over for a few months, then go fund me isn’t going to do squat.
The place is busy from when the doors open in the morning (like 8:00 am) till they close (2:30 am). It’s an awesome location in a well populated and middle/upper community. I know these patrons. They’re the people I went to high school with and used to drink with. They aren’t shy about booze, food, or money. 5 donations and it’s already over $450.00. Kids with cancer and and kicked puppies don’t get that much in a couple of hours!
The whole thing has just given me a WTF moment of pause.
I’m not surprised at all. I think you’ll see a lot more of this. One of the eye-openers from working in bars is that some people spend so much time there it is practically their living room, hobby and primary social hub all wrapped into one.
“Save The Bar!” will be a rallying cry heard all over the world, most likely. Fortunately my old employer seems to be weathering this as well as can be expected. Remodeling time, apparently.
He must operate with some good general business practices.
You know I’m no stranger to the bar life. Once upon a time, my grand parents had some dealings/ownership of one nearby. The end results were well into 7 figures, long comfy retirement, inheritance for about 20 some grand/great grand kids, etc. Not opulent by any standard, but sure as hell wasn’t in go fund me territory either.
Which is why I’m like “What? You f*&kin’ kidding me?
”.
What kind of cars do they drive? That might provide some clues.
His savviest move is probably having no kids to support. He’s fine.
You need to let go of your Putin obsession. If I tell you my opinion on why Putin instituted the lock down, we’ll just go down another rabbit hole.
I disagree with your perspective.
Please…
It’s an example of a dictatorship that doesn’t give a shit about people, especially older people.
The same path was followed by Erdogan in Turkey.
These guys don’t give a shit about their own citizens and had every possible reason to keep their economies open. Now why didn’t they?
The ICL model presented an array of scenarios based on different policy responses, but this extreme projection – also referred to as its “do nothing” scenario – grabbed all the headlines back in March. Although the ICL paper described its own “do nothing” scenario as “unlikely” given that it assumed the virus’s spread in the absence of even modest policy and behavioral responses, its astronomical death toll projections were widely credited at the time with swaying several governments to adopt the harsh lockdown policies that we are now living under.
Taking stock of where i am at right now in this new world i gotta say, i really am not overly affected at the moment. the biggest difference from Pre-covid is that i strictly telecommute… but ive adapted to that pretty well and am thankful that my job looks stable for at least a few more months. Other than that, i do miss the gym, but im staying in pretty good shape just riding MTB and digging trail for MTB.
Its really hitting me that i was not, and am not a big consumer of things. I didnt eat out for dinner or breakfast, brought leftovers to work for lunch, didnt go to bars, didnt buy clothes or electronics. Honestly, my consumer spending has dropped a little, but mostly because i dont spend money on gas for commuting anymore. Now that the forests and trailheads have opened back up, i honestly am living a fairly normal life… albeit with a cloud hanging over me and a big 'ol shoe in the sky ready to drop at any moment. Nothing that i really want is unavailable to me- groceries, weed, beer, mountains, friends… all are 100% accessible with some minor precautions like no carpooling, social distancing, wearing a mask in stores, etc… which is totally fine.
I feel very grateful to be in this situation.
I’ve been more active than usual on my social media since the pandemic. Mostly dark humor and sarcasm like I post here, but with a filter appropriate for friends and family and I generally stay away from politics and religion.
I made a well-received post about why I choose to wear a mask yesterday. Today I’m venturing out into my bar denizens’ pages to challenge them on their posts bragging about NOT wearing a masks. Mostly going after the 20-something crowd of local knuckleheads I know fairly well from bouncing.
This has been fun for me because it is kind of like being back at the bar. These guys were spouting off to a girl who essentially challenged them the same way I did, but once I chimed in they didn’t have anything left to say. The line of attack with this particular group is me challenging their manhood. My position is that I wear a mask because I’m not a giant pussy who is unable to tolerate minor discomfort.
So far, no e-challengers to that position. Tee-hee. This is kinda fun. Can I actually intimidate local knuckleheads into wearing a mask? I’m about to find out!
Well this was an interesting social media excursion for me, interacting with a bunch of people who know me as a bouncer to make the case for why masking up during a pandemic is the considerate thing to do.
The overwhelming majority of the 30 or so people who took place in the mask discussion were firmly NO MASK. Nobody could actually explain the reasons why when challenged, but the closest anyone got to a coherent reply was a guy who explained that a cloth mask is not PPE. I didn’t directly respond to any of them but asked an open question that only one person gave me a direct answer for.
The only guy I responded to is a guy who said masks wearers are scared little kittens. I asked him directly to explain how wearing a mask for the benefit of others makes me scared, and he showed how scared HE was to actually back his public words up in a public forum.
I’m not sure how many opinions I’ve swayed, but it was fun. I think these guys are scared of looking stupid around their boys, typical teenage/young adult herd mentality. Not a whole lot more in play with this group of knuckleheads. I will point out again what a debacle the “no mask” policy at the start of this has been. A lot of people seem to hold on to that as one of the reasons they won’t put a spit catcher on in the produce aisle.
I think a lot of people are more than happy to do things for other people when they’re asked politely to do them, but have a problem being told to do them by a bunch of people that seem just as clueless as your average Facebook posters…
The majority of my problems with what Hogan has done revolve around the above opinion.
That may have worked with this crowd. In fact, you might have had more people wearing masks in Maine if they stuck to “don’t wear masks”.
It doesn’t help that our governor bears a striking resemblance to Austin Powers and is an easy target for young men to dislike and make fun of in memes. I always thought that was silly, even if I chuckled at a few. Plenty to dislike on the policy front.
In general, I think a place like Maine will respond better to guidelines than requirements, but that ship has sailed with regards to cloth masks. Now we’re here, with a state full of people who think they’re being some combination of virtuous, brave and defiant for refusing to wear a spit catcher in the produce aisle next to their bro’s grandmother.
They didn’t protest when they came and put sneeze bars over the salad bar because it didn’t apply to them…
For real though. Where were these freedom fighters when my access to the brown gravy and jello salad was being trounced upon!?!
It’s funny, it just occurred to me that in my mind this whole thing is a lot the presumption of innocence when charged with a crime. I’m not much of a feelz guy, but putting on a mask feels like an admission of guilt. Like, look everyone I have the virus but it’s cool I’m protecting you!
I get it you could be asymptomatic or presymptomatic (even though 87% of the people tested have been negative), but it just seems like such silliness to wear a mask when you’re perfectly fine.
Drinking at the bar, barely avoiding getting thrown out by me.
It does, except when you consider the staggering amount of time a person can be asymptomatic but contagious.
That’s what sold me.
