Here We Go Again: Favre Retiring
DBCooper wrote:
Good riddance is all I can say. I get sick of hearing about how he’s the greatest qb of all-time. Yeah, he’s one of the greatest, but in my mind Joe Montana is still The Greatest. I know Favre has all the records, but the nature of the game is that the QB is measured in terms of postseason success and Favre can’t even approach Montana in that respect.

The QB position isn’t like being a baseball player or even a running back in which total numbers are the measure of greatness. QB success is measured by postseason performance and Favre just doesn’t stack up against the likes of Montana or Brady.

Since 1998, he’s 4 and 8 in the postseason with a passer rating of 77.8. The last half of his career he was by far the most overrated QB in the league. He would have been branded a choke artist in any other city. Whereas Montana’s lasting legacy in the postseason will be his clutch performance down the stretch against the Bengals and the absolute shellacking he put on Denver the next year (the top-rated defense in the AFC that year), Favre’s is tied to his boneheaded interceptions.

I’m glad he’s gone now so we won’t have to see Merril Hoge and Ron Jaworski suck his fucking dick on NFL Live anymore. He threw more interceptions in the postseason than games played, whereas Montana never threw an interception in 4 Super Bowls with a career postseason rating of 92 or 93 and Favre’s was almost ten points lower.

He hasn’t been one of the greats in the game for ten years. Yeah, he had a great year last year, but it ended on a boneheaded pass, and so did the last good year he had before that in 2007.
I agree DB, but I will be devils advocate and ask about Marino. The QB is a unique position and if Favre would have played in Detroit would have different ending. Green Bay went a long long time between QB’s basically Bart Starr then Favre, he was there savior. And I am a Dallas fan and dont really care about Favre, I have just been starving for Football.

The same can be said for Marino. I wouldn’t put him in my top ten QBs of all-time. Sure he’s got the numbers, but he doesn’t have the hardware and the QB position is unique in sports in that it’s all about the hardware.

Now Terry Bradshaw has the hardware, but he’s a special case in that his postseason performances really weren’t that great. Obviously you have to have the numbers AND the hardware, but the hardware is more important. Take a look at Peyton Manning and Tom Brady at the peak of their careers. Manning’s got the numbers, but in all honesty who would you rather have under center in a big game? Brady, because he has the rings to prove that he can perform in the biggest games.

I just saw ESPN show Favre’s top ten moments of all time. How many of them were postseason moments? Two. Only one other one was in a really big game. Montana’s top ten moments could virtually all have happened in the postseason, or at least in big-time regular season games. Plus, when he matched up against the only other contemporary who could compare to him (Elway) he dominated in those games, especially Montana’s last Super Bowl, which might be the single greatest Super Bowl performance from a QB ever.

I would rank the ten greatest QB’s like this:
Montana
Unitas
Elway
Starr (look at his #s, better postseason performer by far than Favre, and with 5 more championships)
Aikman (most underrated QB in my mind)
Brady
Manning
Favre
Steve Young
Fran Tarkenton

The only reason I ever continue to watch it is because my morbid sense of curiosity pulls me back to see if Hoge is ever going to wear anything other than the thickest fucking Windsor knot in his tie that I’ve ever seen. Doesn’t he know the Windsor is for cads?

I can agree with most of that list, Staubach instead of Young. While I always hated Montana with a passion, I will agree he is the best. And I would put Aikman second, but I am a Dallas fan also.

DJ’s a Cowboys fan, claiming any other running back besides Emmitt is against the law.

Hey DJ you want anything signed from the squad this year, I’ll be stopping by their camp a few different times once they come to Oxnard, they’re set up is within walking distance of my inlaws.

PM me, let me know.

Rings and Yards. Brown was dynamic in his time, but really unfair he was playing against a bunch of slow crackers.
