Help Me Read! (Book Recommendations)

Lately I’ve been reading a lot of Christopher Moore’s books. Great fiction and some humor too. Fluke was good and currently reading “Lamb, the story of Jesus as told by his best friend Biff”

I’ll see that vote for Heinlein’s ‘Stranger in a Strange Land’ and raise you Alfred Bester’s ‘The Stars My Destination’ and ‘The Demolished Man.’ And the ‘Schrodinger’s Cat’ trilogy by Robert Anton Wilson.

Some iron game stuff. ‘Strong Enough? Thoughts from Thirty Years of Barbell Training’ by Mark Rippetoe. And of course TC Luoma’s ‘Atomic Dog’, for laughs. And ‘Brother Iron, Sister Steel’ by Dave Draper.

Mind stuff: ‘Trance-formations’ and ‘Get the Life You Want’ by Richard Bandler, co-founder of NLP.

Soul stuff: ‘A Path with Heart’ by Jack Kornfield. And no, you don’t have to be a Buddhist to get it. ‘Tao: the Watercourse Way’ by Alan Watts. ‘Freedom from the Known’ by Jiddu Krishnamurti.

More? I can pimp your bookshelf

I’m not sure if it’s been posted, or if I catch flack for it, but the Harry Potter books are really well written, quick reads, and worth the time investment. Much better than the movies, obviously.

I’m a big fan of “It,” “The Stand,” “Needful Things,” all by Stephen King. “The Talisman” is solid, too. Just about any old-school King, really… Salem’s Lot, The Shining, etc.

“Others” by James Herbert is really interesting, takes a while to get going, but is fucking crazy when all is said and done.

Try reading some of Andy McNabs books.

Look for his Nick Stone series, the first one is called ‘Remote Control’, and is actually based on real life stuff. A lot of it is, since he is ex-SAS. Anyway, the books are pretty fast, full of action, and pretty gripping, best books I ever read.

Old epics if you’re interested in warfare (Aeneid, Iliad, Odyssey, Caesar’s Gallic and Civil Wars, Beowulf); Dune (just the first one); Survival in Auschwitz, The Reawakening if you’re interested in WWII; Y: the Last Man (mostly just because it’s fucking sweet); Dostoevsky; Tolstoy; I don’t fuckin know, man, anything. Read. read as much as you possibly can.

Try Wild at Heart by John Eldredge.

Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa

Lord of the Barnyard:Killing the Fatted Calf and Arming the Aware in the Cornbelt by Tristan Egolf

Second Ascent:The Story of Hugh Herr by Alison Osius

The Prince Roger Series by David Weber and John Ringo.
March Upcountry, March to the Sea, March to the Stars, and We Few. One of the best military sf series ever.

Nightside Series by Simon R. Green

Instead of telling you about each one just go to amazon and type in the name. I believe you would really enjoy them.

Yes I will check all of these out, I really like the warfare books so I will check all these out. Especially like the true-life war stories.

Also any good books that are real on SAS member, Navy seal…all true stories I will be checking out Lone Survivor and the other Nick stone series.
I’ll be checking out EVERY book that is posted on here!

Also anyone know of good books of people’s lives. Autobiography, most good autobiography’s…or biography’s are written for famous people. But I’m not talking like a actor or actress. Someone who has changed the world etc. Thanks.

Right now I am in the middle of the Book of Five Rings. I’d like to finish a book every 2 weeks., and just keep reading

Hell yeah, A song of Ice and Fire is the shit. However, stop after book 3, and wait for the sequels to come out. The first 3-books won’t leave you hanging (in terms of cliffhangers).

If you like fantasy, check out the Malazan series, and, of course, for sci-fi: Dune.

Also… Definitely read something by the guy in my Avatar (Hunter S. Thompson). Amazing journalist, INCREDIBLY fun and original.

If GRR Martin pulls a R. Jordan and dies before finishing, I will flip shit and probably break something.[/quote]

TRUE TIMES TWO. Jordan dragged me through 10 years and 11 books, then dies. Eff that. If Martin does it, I dont just quit reading, I quit words.

On a side note, you guys should all sign up for www.goodreads.com and friend each other. you can rate books and make recommendations; the system is similar to netflix.

Fun stuff.

This book title is the answer. The question was directed to Atlas. It was, “Why the hell would anyone read this book.”

God dammit I was so fucking pissed when he croaked. I spent ~8800 fucking pages of my adolescence only to have the story just go fucking poof. Apparently they’re having another writer finish it, so at least we’ll find out what happens.

OP: Also check out war memoirs, The Things They Carried, If I Die in a Combat Zone…, Here, Bullet (poetry, dunno if you’d like it, but really fucking good), maybe Starship Troopers if fascism’s your thing.

I been reading these Russian Detective novels. They’re written by Boris Akunin.

good stuff.

Anything by Bernard Cornwell, particularly the series starting with “The Last Kingdom”. Historical fiction about the Danes (Vikings) invading Britain. Great stuff.

Guns Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond

anything by douglas coupland

what is with all the Ayn Rand suggestions? That has got to be the most boring shit I ever read in my life.

1984

Hands down best book ever
