HD TVs

1080p is chosen as future movie format, meaning the nextgen movies you’ll rent. Higher resolution is, as mentioned, only beneficial for cinemas. For those reasons, 1080 won’t be outdated for 10+ years. Soon, playstation 3 will allso arrive, featuring 1080p blu-ray player and 1080p games. After the first 6-12 months, prices will drop though, so I’d consider waiting.

As a movie fan, I’ve looked upon the HD-Ready-with-720p campaign as a scam. Downscaling signals with a decimal number is really bad. Granted, due to bandwidth issues, TV-stations will most likely broadcast 720p signals for the next 4-5 years. But I don’t really feel the urge to watch sitcoms or the news in HD.

On the other hand, if you usually only watch DVDs, downloaded movies, broadcasted movies or XBox360, ignore my comments. In any case, I wouldn’t pay more then 200$ for a 720p TV though, as 720p will likely become a fading standard.

I have a 51" HItachi projection that I am quite happy with. Its a year old, displays 1080i, accepts all resolutions (not 1080p). Looks great. Its a full sized wide screen TV. Not too heavy though. I got it for $800 new a Circuit City.

DLP or plasma (but you probably dont have the budget for plasma since you’re looking to save money)

Care to explain why you would make this statement? My thoughts on the difference is that if you like the DLP picture better than the LCD then buy that one or vice versa.

I recently helped my parents research the choices. DLP seemed to be the clear winner. The problem with all the LCDs that I looked at was the refresh rate. They look fantastic as long as nothing moves. Still pictures are almost photo-like. Try to watch football though and you will see jittery artifacts and pixelated blurs during fast motions.

Plasmas are great, nice and thin but also heavy and expensive. The only drawback I found with the DLPs is the bulbs need to be fan cooled. The 50" Philips we ended up buying constantly changes fan speed which I found more annoying than hearing it run at high speed.

The bulbs are also expensive to replace but I think will be cheaper as they get more popular.

I have a 55" Sony LCD and I know what you mean to an extent but it really isn’t that bad. Again I think it is personal preference because all of them will have their pro and cons. For instance I did not like the softer darker picture of the DLP’s si I went with the picture that looked best to me.

Oh shit!!! I bought the wrong TV…!Damn, had I only saw that picture before I bought my LCD. That damn salesman must have tricked me into thinking the Sony had a sharper picture than the Samsung DLP. Boy do I feel dumb now…

You’re joking right???

I just bought a 55" Sony 1080p LCOS rear-projection television and I couldn’t be happier with it. Nevertheless, here is a good article explaining why 1080i should look as good as 1080p when watching films on HD DVDs.

Whats the difference between 1080p and 1080i?[/quote]

The p stands for progressive, and the i stands for interlaced. The 1080 stands for the number of scan lines on the screen from top to bottom. In 1080p, the television redraws the image on the screen 60 times every second, starting from the top and working its way, line by line, to the bottom. In 1080i, the television draws only the odd-numbered lines on the first pass, and then draws the even-numbered lines on the second pass. In other words, it takes an interlaced television twice as long as a progressive scan television to render each page, drawing the full screen only 30 times every second. That’s why 1080p is technically more desirable–the faster refresh rate means less flicker and a smoother picture, especially during heavy motion.

There is something else I noticed from your picture. The Polar Bear was wanting to know what his bodyfat was and I wouldn’t have noticed unless I saw his face from the DLP perspective. Thats it! the Sony is going to the trash.

I don’t want to step on the toes of anyone who has posted good information and links for you, so I’m not going to post my personal opinion here. I will tell you that I am a former sales manager at Circuit City and I would be happy to give you some advice/info if you want to PM me. Best of luck in your TV search.

So from your experience with your tv, do you find CRT RP with 1080i to be better than 720p? I stop at future shop on the way home and they didnt have any CRT to compare. Actually the sales dude looked at me like I was out of my mind when I asked for one, screw him!

You wont be able to see much of a noticable difference viewing it 5ft+ away.

Keep your eye on Wal-Mart. They are talking about a price war for the Christmas season to boost poor (must be a creative definition of poor sales) overall sales. They are already selling some electronics “hundreds” below everyone else. They can afford to lose mony on electronics just to get you “inside”. They have put alot of people out of business and it looks they are going after BB and CC.

No I don’t have anything to do with W-M or anyone else. I read this in the business section of the paper.

You didnt make any points… you asked me to explain myself which i did via a picture and you said (i’ll quote you)

"My thoughts on the difference is that if you like the DLP picture better than the LCD then buy that one or vice versa. "
that is a statement of your opinion.

where was the point that i missed?

The point is exactly what I stated above. Basically put all of the technical bullshit aside, go to the store and pick out which one looks best to you. From what you said in your previous post you acted as though I was biased towards the LCD when in fact all along I have stated what is above in quotes.

Perhaps you are having a conversation elsewhere about this same thing?

the only 2 things i said in response to you was

“I think the image speaks for itself”
(which was a visual explination for why i think DLP is better than LCD)

AND

"whatever floats your boat man… if the LCD you bought makes you happy then that’s fine by me… "

again, where did i say/act as though you were biased?

If your happy with your LCD then great…
from a quality perspective
LCD is NOT as good as DLP
and DLP is NOT as good as plasma

i couldnt afford a plasma so i went with DLP

If i’m giving advice, i tell people to get a DLP. when i walk into a store I can tell a difference between the pictures on LCD and DLP

so my eyes back up what i’ve read online.

I must have read what you said incorrectly.

Alllrighty then… I have also read online that LCD’s are better so what is your point???. Hell I have heard some opinions that Plasmas are not better. It is an OPINION and what you have stated is not a fact. You like the DLP picture and good for you. Some people like the LCD picture and good for them. They are all good and all have their pros and cons but to say one is better than the other is a persoanl opinion only. From a quality perspective I have read that the LCD is better so who do you believe??? This is obviously going nowhere.

Has the polar bear figured out his bodyfat yet???
