In light of the above I thought I’d post a PM I received today from a good online friend of mine, T-Nation’s own World1187, one of our resident active duty Marines who was wounded in Iraq a couple of years ago and has re-enlisted and is headed back to the sandbox.

Please note the final paragraph of his PM and you’ll know why I wish nothing but contempt and a pox on the house of the one who said it. (Sorry for the negative tone here)

…happy thanksgiving. Living in this country and having spent a significant amount of time in others, I can tell you that we have more to give thanks for than anyone else will ever imagine.

In other matters, my friend sent me this poem, and I thought you might enjoy it:

“Take a man and put him alone,
Put him twelve thousand miles from home.
Empty his heart of all but blood,
Make him live in sand, in mud.
This is the life I have to live,
This the soul to God I give.
You have your parties and drink your beer,
While young men are dying over here.
Plant your signs on the White House lawn;
“Lets get out of Iraq”.
Use your signs and have your fun,
Then refuse to use a gun.
There’s nothing else for you to do,
Then I’m supposed to die for you?
There is one thing that you should know;
And that’s where I think you should go!
I’m already here and it’s too late.
I’ve traded all my love for all this hate.
I’ll hate you till the day I die.
You made me hear my buddy cry.
I saw his leg and his blood shed,
Then I heard them say, “This one’s dead”.
It was a large price for him to pay,
To let you live another day.
He had the guts to fight and die,
To keep the freedom you live by.
By his dying, your life he buys,
But who cares if a Marine dies?”

It hits home pretty well. Especially since I got called a baby killer in the airport today. Didn’t that term go out after Vietnam? I’m not even in uniform, but I guess the hair cut gives it away.

FWIW, I’d appreciate it greatly if those who care here would drop him a PM thanking him and his brothers and sisters in uniform your thanks.

[Edit] If there are any worthless cocksuckers who want to turn this into an anti-war/bash the U.S thread, please refrain.
Hey push… I really appreciate it man. I had a wonderful Thanksgiving and raised a toast to the Marines who couldn’t be here with their families as I was lucky enough to. I also raised another toast the Marines who are no longer with us, and I pray that in light of the soon to come of the “governmental administration changes” that they did not give their lives in vain.

But then I remind myself that they live on because the Corps lives on, and has for 233 year of honor, courage, and commitment. America does not need a Marine Corps, America WANTS a Marine Corps and I pray that they always will.

Along with that, I’m a relatively young guy and over the past 4 5 years, I have served 3 combat tours in Iraq and soon will serve another in Afghanistan. I have seen sights that I wouldn’t wish upon anyone, I have witnessed death, destruction, and carnage that I never dreamed imaginable, I have held dear friends as they died, I have grown old to the point where I don’t know many of my old friends anymore, yet I cherish this life because freedom isn’t free.

Freedom is won and protected by the blood of the noble and brave in order to protect the weak and the innocent so that they might live to lead a better life.

There’s a youtube video (Tet Offensive & Khe sahn vietnam war footage - YouTube) about Khe Sanh, Vietnam, and there’s a clip in that says “‘‘This morning,’’ Second Lieut. Sandy Kempner wrote in a letter that was transferred from the book to the film, ‘‘one of my men turned to me and pointed a hand filled with cuts and scratches at a plant with soft red flowers and said, ‘That’s the first thing I’ve seen today that didn’t have thorns on it.’ The plant was also representative of Vietnam. It is a country of thorns and cuts, guns and marauding, of little hope and of great failure. Yet in the midst of it all, a beautiful thought, gesture or even person can arise among it, waving bravely at the death that pours down upon us.’’”

That very accurately describes an experience I had in Fallujah. We had contact with several hundred haji’s and sustained heavy casualties, and 6 days later when the engagement finally ended many were dead, dying, and wounded. But then an Iraqi child came up to us while his family watched on from the door of our house and hugged my leg. He gave us flowers and a picture of his brother who was killed a week earlier fighting the resistance.

My squad sat down with him and we all shared MREs. Soon his family came out and joined us. They cooked us a hot meal of God only knows what, haha. When you haven’t eaten anything but MREs for a month, you don’t care if that hot meal is the neighbor’s cat. None of them spoke English and none of us spoke Arabic well enough to communicate, but the two hours we all spent together were perfect.

I don’t know their names, but I will never forget them, and I pray daily for their safety and wellbeing. I only hope that young boy will grow up in a country of democracy and freedom to live as blessed a life I have. Yes, I have led a blessed life even with all the evil I have witnessed because I live in this great country and hold dear to my heart all that it was founded on and stands for.

OOH RAH!!!
