Gun Love II

Evidence of good-guyness?

Look at the confusion within the ATF just over the last 3 months between the seemingly contradictory letters regarding the Sig Brace and the green tip ban.

He was the head of the agency and someone needed to fall on their sword.

Of course, he’s now going to go work in the private sector for 3x the money so I’m not shedding too many tears…

Have none, and am likely dead wrong, lol.

Just wondering.

Another one on ATF change of command: http://weaponsman.com/?p=21585

My buddy shooting our homemade steel target with his Smith and Wesson 500. The target held up great until this point… My friend laughing in the background kills me.

Enjoying the thread. Just had to decide on the safety/no safety issue. I ended up getting the FNS 9c with the safety (I’m left-handed and like the ambi controls). This is my first concealed carry. Also, have a FNX in 45 cal and CZ-85 in 9mm, both fantastic weapons. Surprisingly (to me anyway), is that of all three the 45 cal has the least recoil and is very smooth to shoot.

All great pistols. The .45 is a slower round (sub-sonic, actually, and thus a great round for a suppressor), so it’s no surprise that it has less recoil.

With the attempt to ban green tip 5.56, I decided to buy some 5.56, but better stuff. I’ve actually shot bad guys with green tips, and they suck.

Israel (IWI) has recently come out with a heavier (77 grain) 5.56 that works wonderfully in the AR platform (and the Tavor). It’s much more accurate at distance and packs a nastier wallop.

I have been told all our special forces not using 7.62X51 are switching to it, so I was happy to be able to find some.

Haven’t shot it yet, but on my to-do list this weekend.

Price per round?

My AR (according to theory) will love that. My bolt gun, not so much.

Going to be picking up a couple lowers this weekend. Will save one to build my A2 clone, and the other for my daughter or 300 black or something.

Also will be getting a SR1911 in April.

I’m really not dying for the long range rifle right now.

for $375/500rd box. (Note the bottom link will probably show up “untrustworthy” on your computer. This is because Google/typical firewalls doesn’t like certain more-aggressive weapons companies.)

$0.75 a round? My anus man, it burns. Jesus.

Brb, seeing if I can just find the bullets lol, and if I can reload it for $0.20.

These are not target rounds. They are rounds you learn to shoot, then save when you need to go shoot someone, including someone wearing Level I-(maybe) III vest. They are sealed in multiple ways so you could go leave them in a magazine for a decade in your damp basement and they will shoot fine.

And my wife says I still have a bit of PTSD. Maybe. Or maybe I’m right.

How’s their .308? The price is certainly appealing.

$.75/rnd is still inexpensive for match grade ammo. I’m interested in how it shoots when you get a chance to try it.

Any reason one shouldn’t be thinking about 6.5 Grendel in a bench shooting AR for 200-600 yard ranges?

I reload so no issue on ammo being expensive.

Is there a better cartridge I should be thinking about/comparing it too?

At those ranges, a heavy .223 bullet will work fine.

If you want to be thorough with it, go to JBM (JBM - Calculations) and compare the drops and wind corrections with the bullet weight you plan to shoot. You’ll have to do some googling to try and figure out what velocity you will likely be at.

The trade-off is going to be in component availability and reloading costs, and I think the .223 will win hands down there.

If you want a semi-auto for long range, look into building one in 6.5 creedmore on a large frame.

More gun porn. S&W 44 mag N-frame and 2k rounds of ammo that doesn’t make power factor.

I’ve got an AR that can handle the heaviest of bullets, but I don’t want to switch my scope and red dot off my bolt gun, which can’t handle over 69 grains or so based on my readings.

And yes, the 223 is cheaper to re-load, however, I have load data for the same power, and the charge is only 40-50% more in the 6.5G.

I’ll likely NOT go with a 6.5G AR, as it will end up a $1500+ rifle easy, and that isn’t even a nice barrel. I can get a scoped Mossberg in 308 win that will be $600 off the shelf and I love their new trigger.

Already have the 15 lowers… and If I’m going to the AR 10 route, I’ll just get another bolt.

The idea was to build a gun on the lowers I have that packs a man size punch at that range, and is reasonably accurate. I won’t be shooting that far often, dozen times a year or so, so reloading at .50-70 cents a round isn’t an issue.

Since I’m legally precluded from “possessing firearms”, I have to “outsource” firearms training for my children. I have a friend out past Culpepper, VA who owns a 100 plus acre farm that has a nice little range on it. He is a Silver Star decorated Marine Scout Sniper, retired, about ten years older than me. A man I consider to be one of my mentors. He taught my youngest boy to shoot over the weekend. Broke him in easy with a .22 Magnum rifle, on a bench. Took his time and very patiently explained everything, helped him get his cheek on the stock, finding his sight picture, etc… His first shot EVER was at ~35 yards about an inch and a half above the bulls-eye, centered perfectly (on a scope that was set for 75 yards). By the end of the day, my boy was shooting 2" groups at 50 yards. Seven years old. I’ve got that first shot target on my fridge. I was a proud daddy.

And after all the praise about how well he did, all he said was, “can we go feed the horses now?” LOL It was a good weekend.

I DID have fun shooting my crossbow. I have an Excalibur Matrix 380 and I dialed in at 4" groups at 100 yards. That thing is fucking bad ass! When you can’t shoot a rifle, a 240 lb draw weight crossbow is the next best thing to being there. The levels of kinetic energy are comparable.
