would rice be considered a much better grain than wheat?

Unfortunately I couldn’t say what best for you, I notice more and more how individualized nutrition is. I will say that along with the first observation, another observation I have made is that there is a lot of building evidence that grains, specifically what is not optimal for most people.
My advice is to try multiple carb sources, and see which one seem to work best for you.
I think you said you were going to try carb cycling, so im assuming your goal right now is to become leaner. The good news is I think you can become leaner regardless of carb sources. Now to optimize your results try the various carb sources.
So take 3 weeks of no grain carb sources see how it goes and then try 3 weeks or so on rice and see how that goes.
@throws: How much do you weigh? How tall are you?
depending on how close I am to my cheat meal I am a little or below 160 pounds and I am just short of 5’ 9".
It’s not always obvious whether you have sensitivity to grains. In my case, I grew up eating carbs like crazy with very modest protein. Nobody thought it odd. There were a few signs, like eating a big spaghetti dinner would lead to stomachache, but didn’t know what it meant. I got lots of colds during winter, but who didn’t? I started drinking coffee in the morning - who isn’t fuzzy headed after getting up?
In my 40’s, I decided to try the Paleo diet - no grains, beans, dairy or refined sugar. Two days later I woke up feeling like a new man - hard, swollen muscles, clear head, the works. Today it’s not strict Paleo, but grains are out and I don’t miss them.

Yes, I agree, some may have the allergy regardless of symptoms causing inflammation in their intestines and such.
Another thing that really, really bothers me, is my belief that the US govt, among others, pushes a diet high in grain consumption. 6-12 servings a day, HUH? Wait, what?
What really makes me question this is the big business attached to grains I.E. cereal companies, most anything processed has corn in it, high fructose corn syrup, etc. Our beef is fed a grain diet despite it actually being cheaper to grass feed cattle (3rd world countries have to do grass fed beef b/c they couldn’t afford feeding them grains). And to cap it all off guess what is the most government subsidized item in America…CORN!
All these things tell me I smell a rat and this is all just big business bullshit.
And how often are we hearing this term “healthy grains”
im actually trying to bulk with carb cycling. im in the transition of the v diet and i have lost a lot of body fat so i want to use carb cycling to bulk and keep fat gain to a minimum.
im mexican so i grew up with nothing but pinto beans, corn/flour tortillas, tostadas and stuff like that and growing up i was always a fat kid. i always thought i was an endomorph but losing all this bodyfat on the v diet got me thinking that maybe im an ectomorph? im certainly not tall and skinny. im 5’6" and i have a stocky build.

I figured as much but didn’t want to make any assumptions. While you are giving out very valuable information, a great majority of this site consists of guys who are after a lean 200+ lbs. To get to that level, I have yet to see it accomplished by anyone who lays off of rice, oats, potatoes, etc. This is also consistent with my own experience after a year of eating paleo and finally “giving in” only to see my LBM and strength levels shoot up like crazy as I put on 50lbs in 2011. If you have any counterexamples, I’m all ears. I think you’d enjoy this article: Paleo Nutrition Improved

of the grains the only one i really didnt want to let go of was the rice, i fuckin love rice, oats are ok i was never really a big fan of them, potatoes are veggies arent they? i want to be as healthy as can be but at the same time for my carb cycling i want to build as much LBM as i can and i have also saw people on this site get huge with grains.
White rice is generally not problematic after the processing (bleaching etc) all the active anti nutrients (lectins, physic acid and gluten) responsible for the inflammatory and negative side effects seen from wheat are removed leaving essentially a pretty solid empty glucose based carb source. Great for PWO during bulking (and even better with all you can eat sushi). This is coming from a guy who is borderline celiac (haven’t done the test but don’t care since i’ve discarded grains and will never go back to them).
so is it wheat that is the problem of inflammation?

That is a good article, and I am actually almost the same as Nate when it comes to diet. Meaning, if someone were to watch me at certain meals they’d think I was paleo, but I do actually use things such as potatoes (which according to Robb Wolf is paleo so…idk), I also still eat ezekiel bread, but really not much else Wheat wise. I would also agree that in order to gain any true size you need some kind of complex carb to fuel muscles. Im not sure if you looked at the entire post, but I never told anyone not to use these food items, more I was saying grains are not for everyone and some should use them within limit.
all grains will have an inflamatory effect on the human body. you should really read WHEAT BELLY. it explains all this in great detail. Also check out the PRIMAL BLUEPRINT. I didn’t think I was sensitive to wheat until I went without all grains for 30 days to try it out. I feel the difference. Rice doesn’t seem to effect me as much, just as rehanb was stating. Being wheat and oat free makes me a better athlete, I am certani of that…
im not interested in joining the primal websites. so you went no grains for 30 days? what difference did you notice?
THe first thing I noticed was that I didn’t fart as much and definitely not as stinky. Then the next thing I noticed was body comp changes 2 weeks into it…
don’t join the primal websites. go to amazon and buy a couple of used books…the books explain it all, the who what when where and why…especially WHEAT BELLY. its worth checking out bro, i promise.
im gonna get them
for the record potatos are not grains right?
How do you get your carbs then if you cut out wheat and oatmeal? I didn’t realize oatmeal was in the wheat category. I cut the wheat I was getting from other foods for a few weeks except on cheat meals, but I’m still eating oatmeal in the morning for carbs. I still need 100 to 150 grams of carbs a day.

Thats what I hear…lol - Potatoes are tubers and are great for meeting an athlete’s energy requirements. I do sweet potatoes more often because they are so nutrient dense. Grains come from grass type plants and potatoes are a root type plant
good luck on your mission
