Well I’m trying to figure out where I should try to live.
I’m currently in the process of attempting to become an Air Traffic Controller with the FAA. I scored a perfect on their test and in the next few weeks I will get an email about my geographic preferences. I am allowed to put down two states and two states only.
If I put down Alaska I’m pretty much guaranteed a job but more than likely will have to spend my whole 20+ year career up there. I’m just not sure if I can deal with 6 months of winter for that long but I do love the outdoors. I’m strongly considering Hawaii, Puerto Rico(chances very low), and Colorado. I also wouldn’t mind working in DC but they only transfer experienced controllers there after a few years in the FAA.
Anyways, I’ll be working 40-60+ hour weeks for most of my career. So I’d like to spend the few hours that I have off on the beach, ski slopes, having fun. I’m really open to suggestions, except California, but try to keep in mind states that have a large amount of airports. Maine would be a cool state to live in but there is only one or two tiny ass airports so my chances of getting hired would be minimal. States like California, New York, Texas, Florida, have more jobs.
NEW YORK…you have JFK and La Guardia. You also have one of the greatest cities in the world here and if you like the out door you can always head up-state and enjoy the lakes and the mountains.
Dude, I don’t give a rat’s fat fucking ass about your politics, but you should really try to get on with KBR/Halliburton. I talked to an ATC in Afghanistan who said that his contract forbade him from saying how much he made, but he’d be a millionaire in a few years.
I would recommend montana since you like the outdoors, we are known as the big sky state. 2 ski resorts in the northwest part of the state, 2 national parks, many many lakes for recreational fun.
Only problem you might have is that we are like maine, and don’t have as many airports as the more populated states.
Michigan is a great state if you like the outdoors, not so much if you don’t. Trees and water everywhere in the summer. Lot’s of winter sports, although the ski hills are just that, hills.
Where I live there are a ton of lakes and thousands of acres of public parkland, but it is 45 minutes to Detroit metro airport. Or better yet, try for Traverse city or Grand Rapids.
Being from Missouri I would think you could handle the summer bugs, but the winters can be long and harsh if your not used to it. It’s no Alaska though.
However, if you need a football team to root for I would look elsewhere.
Upper Peninsula of Michigan…close enough to civilisation so if you need something like a doc, Green Bay is very close. Love the UP! In fact, the bridge from the Lower Peninsula was built so those folks could come to heaven.

KEEP THE FUCK AWAY FROM NEW JERSEY![/quote]
X2. Our outdoors spaces suck and so do our beaches. Winters are cold and the females are the bitchiest in the country. NYC and Philly are on the bottom of my list for these same reasons.
I’ve traveled around the country and have been to around 35 states. I love the outdoors (especially mountains) and warm weather. My favorite regions in order would be San Diego (fuck LA), Portland, and San Fran. Denver would be up there too if I didn’t like beaches and the ocean so much.

negative ID
ATC = air traffic controller
flyboy over here was suggesting he become an ATC with a private company and work in the sandbox for a bit, where he’d make oodles of money, instead of domestically
