Geek S**T SEVEN

I might preorder MW3 if you assholes actually get online. The only person I see on a regular basis is Worm and we all know Halo still has a hold on him.

Okay Pres, I got Battlefield, Rage and Batman now.

What you got. I already have MW3 preordered. :P
Me? Just two XBL gamertags with a combined total of 40,000 gamerscore. Both of which I can re-activate at any time.
Well you all need the guy who will run into a burning building or room to die right.

I don’t have time during the week.

My computer is on her last legs. Trying to decide if I want to build a new computer or just buy one. She’ll work primarily as a media server, and I’ll probably do a fair amount of photo/video editing. Photos will be in the 18 megapixel range, and the video will be hi-def 1080i/1080p. No gaming (360 and PS3 got that covered). Trying to gauge how much horsepower I will need.

Any tips or advice would be appreciated.
What do you have at the moment? Was it custom built or is it a Dell, etc?

Just thinking on what you could keep for a better PC - but either way, build it if you know how. That is certainly the way to go.

i5/i7 PC’s are fairly inexpensive nowadays, so a mid-range i7 Sandy-bridge with 6gb RAM and a decent graphics card should be just fine for HD editing.
Currently I’m using an Alienware laptop with the old Asus body. Back in 2007 I replaced the motherboard and chipset.
Intel Pentium 4 3.1 GHz Processor
4 gigs RAM
NVIDIA GPU, but don’t remember which one I put in there.

Main problems are the old shell/body is breaking apart after 7-8 years of use, and the old girl really chugs when displaying video in 720 or 1080 resolutions.

I figured minimum specs and features to be:
Quad Core chip with 3.1 GHz processing speed
4 GB DDR3 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti
Internal storage 250GB SSD (I got plenty external drives for mass storage)
SD card reader
WiFi + Bluetooth card (if I go laptop route)
Capture card (maybe)

So I’ll go 6 GB RAM instead. I guess I oughta decide if I want another laptop or a desktop. I should be in Austin next week. I’ll hit up Fry’s Electronics and see if inspiration strikes.

Ha, nevermind. I thought Wol posted that for some reason.

If you’re not moving it around much (laptop), a desktop is going to be cheaper and more powerful. Would definitely build a desktop instead. Those specs look good, should easily manage HD footage.

Also, RAM is dirt cheap now. You could probably get 8-12gb kits for $100 or so.

Thanks. I thought RAM would have been keeping pace with CPU and GPU prices, but I guess there is a point where where more RAM just doesn’t yield much in returns.

It’s been a while since I built a computer, and haven’t kept up with the tech or pricing. I’ll probably go the desktop route for home, and further down the road I’ll buy another 17" laptop for photo editing when I go wandering about.

If you’re not gonna do any gaming, a Z68 motherboard and the integrated graphics should suffice.

Why so big? OS and programs should fit on a 60-120 gig SSD and you can put files on a 1 TB HDD without much performance loss. And save lots of money.

You probably already know this but you can catch some major deals next month. I’d make a wishlist and keep my eye on newegg.com and tigerdirect.com.

I didn’t think an integrated graphics card would sufficient. I built gaming rigs in the past, so the mindset is all oomph and horsepower whether I need it or not. I’ll look up the motherboard; see if I can find one with a cpu already mounted.

You’re right about the SSD. If it’s not primary storage, then no need to make it so big.
