As I’m getting ready for work this fine morning, I turn on the T.V. and one of my favorite movies, Gattaca is on. It is near the end and one of my favorite scenes in the movie.
I thought this movie was great and had a powerful message about not letting people define you and rising above the odds to be successful at something you’re passionate about.
My favorite scene is where Ethan Hawke’s character is that close to leaving on his space mission and the Medical Officer needs to clear him and knows he is an invalid, his secret is out.
Ethan thinks he is dead in the water and the space mission is a long gone dream, but the Medical Officer tells him a story about his invalid son and lets him go. That is a powerful scene IMO, the look of gratitude on his face is… well powerful.
I would like to hear others opinions on this movie, if you care to share.

I thought the movie was scary in the sense that I feel we will eventually move towards that as technology advances. We are already able to choose whether we want to have a boy or a girl. Genetic mapping will dictate whether someone is more likely to die of a heart attack. I think our lives are made better by the concept of hope…a concept done away with if the inevitable is known.
ProfX, I agree with that assessment! It was also very powerful at portraying bias and the dangers of a “super race” and second class citizenry.
Don’t we kinda have that now with the economic disparity in our country?
Before it comes to genetically engineered vs. non-genetically engineered, I think this country will be divided by literate vs. illiterate. Just my thoughts though. Damn good movie by the way, really interesting and provocative.
Provacative is a good adjective for this film.
Yeah, I don’t think I could handle having a child and then having the Doc say,
“Well Gainer, looks like your boy here is going to be only 5’6, with a receding hairline by age 18, allergic to all of your pets, scared of commitment, and frequently do curls in the squat rack no matter how much you try to teach him otherwise… Oh, and he’s got a small pee pee too.”
That would suck. I’d like to think that once I become a parent I could be much more influential in my child’s upbringing. You know?
GAINER
Love the movie. Genectic “typecasting” is very scary. They used to do it with race, or based on who your parents were.
