From PC to Apple - Should I Switch?

What are firefox or thunderbird? I don’t use internet explorer- I use mozilla- my brother installed it, and I really don’t see much advantage in it.

Can anyone give input about the other internet apps.

Also, how do I get Mozilla and java and other plugins to work, alot of T-Nation has java popups (search is best example) and i can’t use them in mozilla.

The best thing about a Mac is, it looks cool and it will run Linux. Linux rules! OS-X is nothing but leftover BSD Unix in a nice shell.

Cheers,

They are mozilla’s newest browser and mail client respectivly. Because they are stand alone programs, and not integrated into the Windows OS the chances of contracting a system threatening virus are greatly reduced (no IE workaround or Outlook macro or whatever else people come up with).

As far as plugins atleast in firefox, there is a link that will take you thrugh the steps neccicary to install any given plugin for a page (the t-radio for example, in place of the radio is a link to what you need to be able to use it).

I actually use Firefox all the time at home and love it. I agree - tabbed browsing all the way and the plug-ins make it infinitely expandable. The only downside to Firefox is that it does not render some Web site all that well if those sites are coded for IE-specific functionality. I used Thunderbird for a while for e-mail, but I ended up going back to Outlook in the end because I just like having calendar/e-mail/contacts/notes/tasks all integrated into one program. Many people complain about Outlook and I know it is not perfect, but I gotta admit - I like it.

As someone who has sold both apple and pc computers here’s a little advice, if you do decide to go with a pc check out a model with an AMD Athlon 64 chip. It’s alot faster, more upgradeable, and cheaper than anything with a pentium 4.

As far as which one to get it’s a personal preferance. I know people who swear by their apples but most people I talk to prefer the pc’s. I pesonally think that apples are a little expensive for what you get but if you like the platform better it’s worth the extra money to get what’s comfortable to you.

Also check out the media center pc’s if you’re into music, videos, and games.

As far as software availability for Macs goes, keep in mind that OSX is based on a Linux (actually BSD) kernel. This means you can run pretty much any Linux application natively on a Mac, which gives you thousands upon thousands of available programs.
Macs do come with a single-button mouse, but multiple-mouse functionality is already built into OSX. All you have to do is plug in a mult-button mouse, and you are all set.

I use a dell monitor & microsoft trackball explorer at work with my Mac and haven’t had any problems. Plugged them in and they worked. Both were left over from the ThinkPad I was using.

MAC more stable? In what respect?

The only difference is MACs are RISC and regular PC’s are CISC.

Now you are probably referring to the Mac OS X being more stable. Sure I guess one can say that when comparing it to some older versions of windows. Though Microsoft has gone a long way with win2k and winxp.

Mac OSx doesn’t let you really tweak your computer, something goes wrong and well you probably have to reinstall.

Want stability?

I use Slackware linux on all my desktop/laptop machines. Use it for everything. I rarely ever reboot my machines and they always perform at the speed they are suppoed to. And believe me I use them very intensively.

Yah it’s based on FreeBSD and mach 3

It is an overpriced POS in my opinion.

Reminds me of the ol Alpha computers that everyone touted to run unix servers on. They were overpriced and a CISC machine could do the same thing at a lower price.

I don’t really use MACs, I have tinkered with them a bit. You could probably run WINE on it if you use the portability api’s that come with MacOSx. I run wine on my linux machine for certain software. I do newsgroups a lot and well linux just doesn’t have any good usenet software.

What’s proprietory about them? I’ve found it easy switch stuff out on mine.

Are you talking about the mini-cased deals Dell sells?

I have six dells, with standard cases, and they’re a pleasure to work on compared to something like a Compaq of HP box.

mac=much better in my opinion

Packard-Bell was probably the worst PC ever made, and Compaq is a close second.

Yeah - the problem I have is with Dell’s everything-on-board, no PCI slot type boxes.

My parents got a standard case Dell, and they love it.

I run a Dell laptop, it’s great. I would never buy a Dell PC though. Though they have a great warranty service. I only wanted the warranty on the laptop since I will be moving it around. But it’s a p4 3.2ghz HT with a radeon 9700, out performs most desktops.

Anyways, my friend bought a dell pc recently. It is easily upgradeable. They do come with onboard sound/video. But he just bought his own ati card and his own sound blaster and slid them in. The case is easier to work with than most pc’s. It just opens up with no screws. The cards don’t require any skrews either. You just slip everything in. It’s quite convenient.

I just know that some of their custom boxes don’t have an AGP slot. And they have maybe one free PCI slot. Not very versatile.

I would really like to get me a laptop. What with the centrino technology, the explosion of wirless networking, and the fact that my hayseed town finally got DSL - laptops actually make a sensible option to desktops.

I like both computers. I had a dell for 5 years that rarely gave me any trouble and 9/10 the problems that I encountered were my fault! Plus my wife loaded it with so much addware that I am going to have to wipe it clean!
I just bought a new ibook and I am having a lot of fun with it. I bought the mac mostly for using my camera, ipod, and camcorder with since it has all the software necessary.

Just go with what you want either one will do what you want.
