Hey sorry I’m late to this. Some good discussion here. My observation about European style “free” public goods of healthcare and education is that they ration those goods and that would never fly in the US. My impression after talking with a few Europeans about this:
In Europe they don’t like meritocracy in the private sector. They have much more strict labor laws and unionism is at mich higher rates than the US. Conversely they are fine with rationing and meritocracy in publicly funded healthcare and education. They don’t try to save grandpa or that baby in the UK. If you’re dumb or lazy, you don’t get to go to college or grad school. They just trust their bureaucrats more to make those calls.
In the US we love meritocracy in the private sector, we hate it in education. That’s why we mandate that public schools put handicapped kids in with healthy children and why we consider race for college admissions to even things out. It’s for this reason we have grade inflation and kids graduating high school reading at 5th grade level. Maybe it’s because we trust government less. Maybe it’s the 1964 CRA mindset.
Just imagine if US universities were rationed and meritocratic… Harvard would be 60% asian, 10% Jewish and less than 5% POC. There would be riots.
One thing is for sure, if you want big benefits like this from government you have to ration them. And Americans hate that.
We are leaving out an important downside of free education at this level. How will rich people get advantages in this are for their kids? I don’t want to live in a world where someone super wealthy can’t buy their way into a better school and I don’t think any of you do either.

I like Yang’s take (about 1:10ish)

They’ll still send their kids to high end private schools like Harvard.
I think he’s got to be the most interesting candidate on that side of the aisle.

What if those schools get government funds?
I don’t care what happens we just need to make sure wealthy kids can still come out ahead.
That’s why I’m starting my new charity designed to help the super wealthy children of America. Some of these kids only have one Ferrari. With your generous donation we can make sure this travesty doesn’t continue. Donate today to Extra Advantages.

Be careful, someone did just that and now some very nice rich people are being persecuted by the government.
I have faith that our justice system will do its job of making sure nothing really happens to them. They aren’t poor minorities so hopefully justice will prevail and they can get a minor sentence.

Did you ever see that Chappelle show episode where they had what would happen if the criminal justice systems were swapped?
Minor sentence? They’ve been through enough already. They deserve an apology.
Sometimes authorities will jump to conclusions before realizing someone is rich. I heard they almost thought about getting a few bankers in trouble during the housing crisis.
Just before anything could happen someone realized they were rich and the crisis was averted. A couple golden parachutes helped make a few things right. Luckily we got back to seeing the real problem which is poor brown people.

If Obama hadn’t been a socialist he would have executed all those rich folks.
I don’t think he has, so I’m taking the liberty of posting it for him:
Here are a few more race switch classics!

Yeah shame it didn’t get to go longer. Key and Peele definitely had some good sketches but on the whole nothing touches Chappel. His stand up is solid but not as good as the stuff they came up for his show
