I don’t see it as controversial, but as not important. When I played football in high school the fastest four guys on my team were a white guy, a Korean, and two black guys, of which I was one. And we ALL had short legs. :stuck_out_tongue: AND we had a black quarterback and our two best receivers were white. Oh man! We should write a novel… (rolls eyes)

My issue with his statement is were are all the African Sprinting champs Male or female??? If this is true then African would rule those events. But they don’t They do however dominate the Marathons.

I think it has more to do with how your trained and were your trained. And also the pool of athletes you have to choose from.

Hmm… still pointlessly arguing about race? I’ll check back in a few pages.

It’s only sub-Saharan West Africans, rather than all Africans, that have the advantageous physiology for sprinting. These are the ones who ended up being shipped to the US and Caribbean and whose descendents win all the medals for the US and Jamaica. Same thing with the British black athletes.

What exactly were you expecting to see? The title of the thread shows it’s about race.

OK then back to the original question Where are all the Sub-Saharan West African sprinters at?

So the decedents of people who left africa 200-400 years ago is what he was talking about. Not the Africans that are still there. Somehow all the genetic sprinting ability was only in the people that left Africa and not in the people that are still there?

Ok just checking.

Nice. Which region of your ass did you pull this one from?
Three are a multitude of reasons for it.

Muscle type, Africans tend to be on one extreme or the other for balance of 2A, 2B, and 1. Whites tend to be somewhere in the middle.

Circulatory structure in the legs muscles tend to be different.

Limp lengths and attachment points tend to be different.

Whites are not typically built for sprinting.

Not controversial at all. I just don’t like people telling me I can’t sprint =)
That’s not it at all. General statistics don’t dictate what an individual can do.

If you are born with the right tools and you train hard you can make it being any race. It’s also possible for a white guy to be born with a skin tone so he doesn’t burn easily. It’s just that if your of white lineage, that probably isn’t going to happen (poor gingers).

It’s also really important to note that physical tools only mean so much. Shear hard work and training can take you a long way. But when talking about the absolute upper ecialon of a sport, those really minor physiological differences are the difference between being an MLB player and being an all star.

Look at phelps. ridiculously long arms and torso, huge hands and feet, really short legs. Perfect for swimming. I’m willing to bet with a more nominal build he’d still be an Olympic swimmer, but not 14 gold medals.

The simple fact is that not many blacks are built like that so it’s just not as likely for one to be a swimmer like phelps. However, if one is built that way, there is no reason they couldn’t be the next phelps.

It’s the same blood line.

No one has denied the role of training in development. They would be the ones with those genes with the ability to professionally train.

Moving to richer countries if they’ve got the talent I expect and then taking advantage of the better nutrition and training facilities to do well.

From http://allafrica.com/stories/200809290558.html

“Nigeria as a country has always been well blessed with talented athletes in all events sprints, jumps and throws to the envy of other African nations and even the world at large but its inability to bring the best out of them through well planned training programme, has remained the major reason why it has failed to assume its place among top athletics nations in the world despite its irrefutable potentials and enviable prospects which makes other countries green with envy.”

and

“Nigeria used to be a nation to reckon with in track and field events in the 80s and 90s when the young Nigerian prospects were offered American university scholarship which opened to them a world of opportunities to study and train in American universities where they also have the added chance of honing their precocious skills through the NCAA competitions which runs through the season.”
